The Lucan-Ilderton Jets
started their Ontario Hockey
Association Intermediate "B''
season, November 4 of last year
and were quite confident of
finishing in first place.
The Jets still have those
hopes but the outcome of the
next two games will tell the tale.
At the moment they are in a
first place tie with the Durham
Huskies and each team has two
games left on the schedule.
Friday night, the
Lucan-Ilderton club travels to
Fergus to take on the Thistles
while the Huskies take on the
Acton Tanners.
The most important game of
the season will be played in
Durham Sunday afternoon when
the two top clubs hook up.
If the Jets and Huskies finish
in a tie for top spot the nod
would go to the former because
of a better goals average.
The Jets warmed up for their
final two games with a
convincing 9-0 win over the
Cheltenham Harvesters at the
Huron Park arena, Tuesday
night.
ROBB AGAIN LEADS
Jamie Robb, the league's
leading scorer continued his
entire season pace by scoring
one goal in each period to head
the Tuesday scoring against
Cheltenham.
Robb opened the scoring at
5.26 of the first period taking
passes from line-mates Jacques
Cousineau and Bill Neil to give
his club the goal that actually
won the game.

In this column we continue
with information regarding
figure skating and its proper
instruction gleaned from the
handbook for Happier Figure
Skating.
Group Lessons — Most clubs
offer some form of group
instruction for beginners. This
instruction may be given by the
Professionals, usually at a small
fee, or by advanced skaters in
the club, at no extra fee.
National Skating Tests —
These lessons usually follow
some plan for teaching the basic
skating techniques, such as the
National Skating Tests.
Private Lessons — When your
child has mastered the problem'
of balance, and can stroke freely
and evenly, she is ready to
benefit from private instruction.
You should not expect your
child to be ready for the
Preliminary Test (the first
C.F.S.A. Test) without a fair
number of private lessons, All
you can reasonably expect from
the group instruction is
controlled stroking and, perhaps,
some concept of the basic edges.
Preliminary Test — There are
four basic moves, or "edges" on
each foot, and in order to pass
the Preliminary Test the skater
must show control and
confidence on each. These
"edges" are: forward inside,
backward inside, forward
outside and backward outside.
It is standard procedure to
abbreviate references to the
edges, and thus RFO stands for
right forward outside, LBI is left
backward inside, etc. (If you try
to read about the tests in the
Rule Book, you will need this
information.)
The Preliminary Test also
contains the two basic figure
eights RFO-LFO and RFI-LFI.
There is one more figure, known
as the Waltz Eight which we
won't try to describe here.
Progress — Progress in skating
depends on three main factors:
The skater's natural
co-ordination, Adequate
instruction and Useful practice.
Some children are able to do
useful practice without
supervision right from the start,
many do not even practice
carefully when a parent is
watching.
If you feel your child is not
making adequate progress, ask
yourself, "How good is her
natural co-ordination?" Some
children learn much more slowly
than others because of poorer
co-ordination.
Next, ask yourself, "Is she
getting enough lessons?" and,
finally, "Is she attending the
sessions regularly, and doing
useful practice while at the
rink?"
The parents who can give
their child more lessons, and
who are prepared to go to
greater lengths to encourage her
to practice longer and harder,
have a right to expect more
progress, provided she has
average natural ability.
more than the Lucan Irish who
hold down second spot.
The Zurich Dominions are in
third spot with 25 points while
the Belmont Sunsets are in
fourth, one point further back.
The Exeter club lost a 4-3
decision in Lambeth, Wednesday
and came back to home ice
Friday and were only able to
gain a 4-4 tie with the same
team.
In their next action the locals
play host to the Hawks from
Mitchell, Friday night at the
Exeter arena with an 8.30
starting time.
FAIL TO HANG ON
The Hawks with a 4-3 lead
over Lambeth, Friday with less
than a minute to go were unable
to hang onto their slim lead as
Terry Davis scored the equalizer
with only five seconds remaining
on the clock.
Davis was the only goal scorer
of the first period to give the
visiting Lambeth club an early
lead.
In the second session, Gary
Evans scored his first of two
Lambeth goals at 4.28 before
the Hawks could find the scoring
range.
The locals struck quickly
with time running out in the
second period and were able to
tie the count at 2-2.
Pete Glover, an affiliated
player up from the Exeter
midgets was on the firing end of
both goals.
Glover notched the second on
an unassisted effort after Larry

up the Newby Tire 12-7 win

several good stops to preserve his
shutout.
With less than four minutes
to go in the initial frame, Doug
Galloway upped the score to 2-0
by firing playing coach Jack
Nairn's pass into the visitor's
net.
In the second session, Robb
scored again this time from
Galloway and Neil at 3.18.
Only moments later Nairn
fired a successful shot with Ken
Loft providing the passing
assistance.
Before the period was over,
Loft and Dave Webster had
checked in with goals. Nairn
gained assists on both with Steve
Proctor helping on Loft's and
Jim Bender getting in on
Webster's.
At the halfway mark of the
third period, Ken Loft let a
blistering drive from the blueline
go that goalie Hary Newlove
made a good stop on but Nairn
jumped on the rebound and
fired it home.
Robb scored unassisted at
11.47 and Galloway completed
the game scoring near the
seventeen minute mark with
Nairn picking up his sixth point
of the night.

Last week I missed the
deadline for the newspaper and
consequently the Irish received
very little press after playing
some of their best hockey of the
season. So far this week the
Lucan lads have split the two
games. Wednesday, the Irish
outskated and out-shot the
fast-fading Zurich Dominions,
beating them by a score of 8-3.
The Dominions were unable
to score on Jerry Freeman in the
Luc an nets until the
eleven-minute mark of the third
period. Then Sterling, Loader
and Schilbe each scored to..spoil
a perfect game for the Lucan
net-minder.
Captain Tom Hodgins led the
Lucan attack with two goals,
while singles went to Jim Hearn,
Dave Revington, Jeff Craig, Mike
Anderson, Dennis Carty and
Tom Anderson.
The three stars were all
awarded to Lucan, with the first
star going to Tom Hodgins,
second star, Jeff Craig, and third
star, Jerry Freeman, with
honorable mention going to
Mike Anderson for his defensive
play.
Lucan out-shot Zurich 37-25.
In penalties Zurich picked up
seven to Lucan's 11, the big
loser for the Irish was Steve
English with three, and in each
case the Lucan club was forced
to play short-handed as Steve
was unable to take a Zurich
player with him to the penalty
box.
In Belmont on Saturday
night, the one hundred Lucan
fans who travelled with the club
had very little to cheer about as
the fourth-place Sunsets taking
the lead in the first period never
looked back. At the end of the
first period the score was one to
nothing,
, The second period ended 3-2,
while Belmont added four goals
to Lucan's two in the third
period, to win 7.4. The Irish
played Santa Claus giving the
puck away time after time in
their own end. Lucan is now in
second place, four points ahead
of the Zurich Dominions.
The big question in the
mind's of the Lucan Executive is
"what is happening to Exeter
and Zurich as they jockey for
play-off position." Both teams
are losing games which they
should be winning as they try to
end up in first and third place.
The Lucan powers that be are
confident that neither of these
teams will be a serious threat if
they continue to play the type
of hockey that they have
displayed for the last three
weeks or so.
Last night Belmont was in
Lucan and no doubt you were
on hand to agree or disagree
with the man who picked the
three stars.
