FOR ALL. GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Carnivals
coming up
The fast concluding winter season will still
provide plenty of varied entertainment for spectators and sport participants.
While most of the hockey leagues are moving
quickly down to the playoff trail, the immediate
attention in the district will be turned to winter
carnivals.
This weekend, the Hensall Kinsmen are holding
their annual winter carnival and it promises to be bigger
and better than ever.
In addition to all of the regular events that have
highlighted the program in previous years will be special
snowmobile races_ Saturday afternoon.
A hastily called meeting Monday night by district
snowmobilers organized western snowmobile games and
shows for the Saturday matinee program.
Bob Caldwell who is in charge of the latest
additions to the program told us there will be obstacle
and vaious pick-up races such as egg and hay pick-ups.
These events will be patterned after the summer saddle
club shows in design.
Caldwell added that he expected close to 200
snow machines to attend and participate in the various
races.
The entire carnival will be kicked off Friday night
in the Hensall arena with Hensall novice, pee wee and
bantam hockey teams taking on Adastral Parkof Clinton.
Late in the evening a Carnival queen will be
crowned.
The Saturday afternoon races will be preceded
by a monster parade and snowmobile rides will be
available to all children in attendance. At the same time
free skating will be available at the Hensall arena. Judges
will also be viewing the many snow sculpture exhibits.
Saturday night at the arena, hockey will reign
again. One of the features will be an exhibition between
the Hensall Kinsmen and Zurich Lions.
In addition, the Hensall and Exeter midgets will
battle in a real grudge match. Hensall native, Bill
Chipchase is now coaching the Exeter club and will be
out to win over his home town boys.
Sunday afternoon, a regularly scheduled OHA
Junior "D" game between the Zurich Dominions and
Lambeth Flyers has been transferred to the Hensall
arena. Game time is two o'clock.
Following the junior game, a bunch of slightly
used Christmas trees will be burned.
We hope the weatherman smiles favorably but not
,too warmly on the Hensall Community for the
weekend. Fellows like Bob Caldwell, Ron Wareing, Paul
Neilands, who is the general chairman and Iry Elliott are
putting a lot of time and work into planning. They are
being ably assisted by a large group of volunteers.
Another Winter Weekend
At the same time students at the Centralia College
of Agricultural Technology will be holding their third
annual winter carnival.
The young men and women at Centralia will be
participating in various sports activities including
hockey and broomball with teams from other similar
colleges in Ontario.
At a special ceremony, Tuesday night, Norma
Smith, an animal health technician student was crowned
Carnival Queen and she will be in the spotlight most of
the weekend.
High Schoolers, Too
Not be outdone by the young people at CCAT,
students at South Huron District High School will be
holding their own winter weekend on February 6 and 7.
Ron Bogart, physical educational head at the
local high school has also informed that a special
basketball attraction has been lined up for February 17.
Last year the Harlem Aces proved a popular
attraction with their canny ball handling and a special
tricks and humour.
This time it will be the California Cuties in town
for a one-night stand. This is the same group of athletes
that have performed in Western Ontario in recent years
on the softball field. Tickets for the special event will go
on sale very shortly.
Doug Ellison, coach of the South Huron wrestling
team has also announced that the Huron-Perth
Conference playoffs will be held at the local school
gyms, February 11.
In order to accommodate the many expected
entries three mats will be used at one time for the
preliminary events.

The $124,000 "Shell's Wonderful World of Golf"
international elimination tournament moves into the
semi-finals Saturday, Feb. 7, on the CBC network with
Canada's George Knudson meeting Roberto De Vicenzo
of Argentina at the St. Charles Country Club, Winnipeg.
Filmed last spring, the match is followed by a
gallery of 9,000 people, the largest in the nine years of
the Shell series, who turn out to watch Knudson, their
hometown hero.
De Vicenzo, winner of over 130 international
tournaments, and Knudson don't disappoint the record
crowd, playing an exciting match which isn't decided
until the final green.

The Crediton Tigers travel to
Clinton to take on the Colts
Thursday night and will be back
on Huron Park ice for a very
important contest, Sunday
afternoon.
The top Seaforth club will
supply the opposition for a game
that is slated to start at two
o'clock in the afternoon.
SAME METHODS
The Tigers used similar
methods in accomplishing their
scoring in the two games against
Monkton.
On Monkton ice, Friday, the
Tigers took a 3-0 lead at the end
of the first period, only to have
the Wildcats bounce back with
four straight goals, forcing the
Tigers to score late in the third
period to gain a tie.
At Huron Park, Sunday,
Crediton moved into a 4-3 lead
after the first twenty minutes of
play and the Wildcats notched
three unanswered scores in the
middle session.
Gary Parsons, the slap shot
artist scored his third goal of the
night at 10.17 of the third
period Sunday to put the clubs
on even terms.
Dennis Morrissey, who has
been one of the Tigers top point
getters in recent weeks notched
what proved to be the winner
less than a minute later.
In the first period, Parsons
and Bob Pinter each scored
twice while Bob Powell, Dennis
Hughey and Bill Quipp were the
Monkton scorers.
Craig Chapman picked up
assists on both goals fired by
Pinter while Fred Lamb turned
the same trick on the Parsons
goals.
In the second period,
ex-Mitchell Hawk Don Vipond
scored twice and Warren Smith
notched a singleton to put
Monkton in front 6-4.
Bob Buchanan narrowed the
Monkton margin to a Single goal
at 5.40 to set the stage for
Parsons and Morrissey to put the
Tigers in front to stay.
At 12.10 Chapman added an
insurance counter with Ken
Fraser assisting and with less
than three minutes to go
Morrissey triggered his second
successful shot of the night from
Paul Young and Buchanan.
BUCHANAN TIES IT
Bob Buchanan's second goal
of the night with exactly one
minute remaining in regulation
time gave the Tigers their 4-4 tie
in Monkton, Friday.
The Tigers scored three times
in the first period without a
reply from the home club and
seemed to be well on the way to
victory.
Dennis Morrissey opened the
scoring at 5.23 with Terry Wade
assisting and Bob Pinter made it
2-0 only two minutes later with
Buchanan doing the assisting.
At 13.25 with Crediton
playing two men short,
Buchanan found the scoring
range for his first of two goals.
Don Vipond scored the only
goal of the second period to cut
the Crediton lead to 3-1.
In the thirdperiod, Dennis
Hughey, Fred Fuller and Bill
Quipp scored for Monkton and
set the stage for Buchanan's
tying goal as time was running
out.
