Annual Winter Carnival, The
proceeds from this years carnival
are ear-marked for a very
worthwhile cause, renovations to
the Hensall Arena.
Noble Grand Mrs. Elgin
Thompson presided for the
regular meet of Amher Rebekah
Lodge Wednesday evening with a
fair attendance considering the
weather conditions and the
number of members who were
absent with the flu and colds.
Word was received that both
Clinton and Goderich Lodges
will be represented at the 21st
birthday party February 4 if, the
weather is favourable.
Plans were discussed to invite
the 1969 student who had been
chosen to attend last years
session of the United Nations at
a later dater
Final plans were made for the
bake sale and tea on Saturday,
which was very successful with
proceeds going to the renovations
at the local arena.

in any attempt to keep up with
today's youth.
However, many oldsters still
like to point out that conditions
under which they lived were
much more difficult and they
are probably correct in their
opinions that many of today's
generation couldn't have coped
with it at all.
One of the things many
senior citizens enjoy talking
about is the fierce winter
conditions of a few decades ago.
However, some of the winters
in the recent past have managed
to provide the same amount of
heavy snow and just last week
this area experienced one of the
lowest temperatures on record.
We're not certain what the
exact reading was in your
particular community in South
Huron, but no doubt it was
around the —20 to —25 figure
somewhere.
There's no question but what
that figure is the type seldom
experienced by grandpa, so he's
lost another of his "I remember
when" topics to the modern
weatherman.
Speaking about the weather,
there have been few on record as
enjoyable as that being
experienced this year.
It's been cold at times, but
we have yet to have a crippling
storm, or one that even
threatened to reach any such
proportions.
This week, the groundhog
will decide the fate of the
balance of the winter weeks.
Let's hope he won't be too
unkind,

For those who have been
shivering through the recent cold
snap, thoughts of the sunny
south no doubt proved rather
enticing.
However, recent visitors to
Florida tell us that it wasn't too
great down there at times either.
During one stretch this
month, Florida had four
successive nights when the
temperature dropped to beloW
the freezing mark. Many of the
crops were ruined.
Holidayers, report it 'was so
cold they didn't even get an
opportunity to go swimming
while on their holiday.
Activities get under way on
Friday night at seven o'clock,
when three Hensall Minor
Hockey teams, the Novice,
