Ambrose Bierce We may live without poetry, music and art; We may live without conscience and live without heart; We may live without friends, we may live without books, But civilized man cannot live without cooks. Owen Meredith The 21st Canadian Furniture Mart, held last week in Toronto in four buildings at Exhibition Park was the biggest show of its kind in Canada. Attending the Mart were -the local furniture dealers, Bob Fletcher and Irvine Armstrong of Hopper-Hockey Furniture and Robert Dinney of Dinney Furniture. TAKE OVER BY BIG COMPANIES Bob Fletcher stated there is a definite swing of the major manufacturers going into all groupings of furniture. "The giant companies are eating up the small ones and I suspect in a few years we will be dealing with only eight or nine companies at which time we will have to be franchised by them." lie said there is a definite trend of plastic replacing wood in furniture, "It is very durable but still a little expensive. However it will come into line." The use of vinyl material is being expanded and it, no longer has the cold feel it used to have but is soft and pliable. A repair kit has been introduced for mending vinyls and "you can almost do a skin graft on damaged plastic material now." OLD KITCHEN SETS OUT Mr. Fletcher also commented on the high-style in kitchen furniture. The old fashioned concept of a kitchen set is out. In its place has come high-style chairs using lush velvet on chrome, and wrought iron with glass top tables. He says it was "very dressy and moderate to expensive." Maple furniture is still good in kitchen appointments. The mirrors shown at the Mart were very ornate designed to go with the heavy Spanish and Mediterranean furniture. CONSTANTLY UP-GRADING The trend in upholstery is to carved velvet, not unlike the old velours, in a multitude of colors. Pole lamps are not as popular and the swing is to swag and tree lamps. Another gimmick being offered is a "horseshoe mattress" measuring 60" across the top and 80" at the bottom. This is said to be introduced from Mexico. Bob Fletcher says the major companies are constantly `up-grading' their furniture. Very, very expensive lines are now available. It is not unusual for Spanish dining room suites to cost as much as $2,000.00 and chesterfields are readily available in the $1,000.00 to $3,000.00 range. All three gentlemen were accompanied by their wives and Ada Dinney gives her impressions of the show from a women's angle: Ed Sullivan calls his show really big, but the 1970 Canadian Furniture Mart is "REALLY BIG." It ran for seven days at Toronto's Exhibition Park and filled the Automotive building, the Coliseum, Industry and Queen Elizabeth buildings. The Mart is a major opportunity for retailers (and the public, on certain days) to see a complete line of home furnishings at a single time, so they can evaluate and order the lines they'll sell during 1970. There was a marked increase in the number of manufacturers using private show rooms. The show rooms are gorgeous and patrons are treated royally. After registering Monday morning, we gasped in surprise at all the money spent in just putting down the, red carpet for us. It went all around the buildings about 9' wide, yards and yards of it. I hate to think how much more our feet would have ached by the end of the day if it hadn't been for the red carpet, Our heads were soon chucked full of all the different styles and makes of furniture — do we buy this or that? It was interesting to look at the furniture that won the Eedee awards. It may be of interest to you that these awards are sponsored by the Ontario Department of Trade and Development to stimulate new concepts in furniture design and Manufacture. It's hard to imagine any thing new with all , the different designs we have now in furniture. However, the Modern was new, especially one table, which might have passed for a dining table, and looked like it would be perfect as a meat chopping block. Some of the modern fibres and plastics are great but I don't think they'd stand up as well as that table. The young people might go for some of the modern lamps — square, red or blue with an aluminum dome or globe light on top (reminds you of a bubble gum machine). An Eedee award winner lamp was a column of white acrylic, which sat on the floor about 4' tall with semi-circular shades of different colours, that clip on any where on the column. The thing that really bothered me was the huffing, puffing and pushing you had to do to get out of the low, modern furniture. Romantic styles, such as Spanish, French or English will always be around with all their beauty and charm but my crystal ball says ''Modern will be the furnishing trend of the '70's," Some of it is just great and so comfortable, in fact the suite I would like for our own home is a beautiful, overstuffed California modern, chesterfield and love seat, in a lovely new crushed velvet, that I would mix with French Provincial tables. The heavy pine furniture, which is marked when you buy it new (another joy for children, beat it with a chain) is still very popular in living room, dining room and bedroom furniture. It takes you back a few years — With the white porcelain knobs On it and it's very sturdy! The Colonial houses of solid maple furniture were charming — you fall in love with every stick of furniture. It's so practical and some of the upholstery pieces were bragging iron velvet, in floral patterns, that would make any housewife pay the extra pennies to own it. Being grandparents, we were especially attracted to the baby furniture. Gone are the baby pinks and blues with the gold, green, red, orange and "flower power" taking over, to say nothing of the comfort and colour in mattresses, pads, etc. I think the star exhibit and one which was most interesting was the one which displayed the 12 -different settings of Zodiac,. It was very cleverly done and amusing as you found your sign to see what furniture and Accessories you would choose — Mine, which is Cancer, was strangely enough nearly all antiques. The picture displays were wonderful but confusing with so much to choose from. Hundreds of original oils, prints of old masters, moderns and all sort of small prints done in different frames for wall groupings way to use up your odds ends in frames, but so attractively! They are experimenting with plastic frames which look like wood, which are highly chip resistant and much cheaper than wood. Although this is not new because many of the better bedroom and dining room suites, with all the carving on them, looklike woodbut are plastic and are beautiful. The dining room suites and bedroom suites were in abundance with Spanish or Mediterranean being most popular, I believe, Many of the suites were shown in soft colours, antiqued, yes, distressed too, The Queen Elizabeth building was all floor coverings and each manufaetnrer out did lilmselt with their displays, You have never seen so many rugs — rugs on -the floors, rugs on the walls, rugs on the tables, rugs on pillars with the shag seeming to be by far the most popular everywhere. Patterns .in floor coverings will be playing a large part in our homes within the next year or so, The -colours and patterns are simply beautiful, Let us see what the future holds as we enter the "Seething Seventies.".
