FOR ALt. GOO[ SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Minor doy
is set
Arrangements have been made for local
observance of the Annual Minor Hockey Day.
Although the Canadian Amateur Hockey
Association has set aside the week of January 24 to 31
to spotlight the youngsters, officials of the Exeter Minor
Hockey Association have decided on February 14.
Hockey fans in town and the area will be assured
of about fifteen hours of continuous action on the
second Saturday in February.
Admission for the whole day's activities will be
one dollar for adults and fifty cents for children.
Spectators will be able to come and go as they please
and see as many games as their weekend schedules will
permit.
While the emphasis is on the Minors and the fact
every boy registered in the EMHA whether he is an
all-star or house league participant will perform for the
benefit of his parents and relatives, the highlight of the
day could be the final contest.
Plans are being quickly formulated in an attempt
to get most of the former Exeter Mohawks of Senior
"B" and Intermediate "A" company of the late 1950's
back together to take on the current junior edition of
the Hawks.
Two or three of the Mohawks of that era are still
actively engaged in hockey competition and should
form the nucleus of a club capable of giving the
youngsters a run for their money.
Goalie Gar Baker and forward Ken Doig are still
performing regularly with the Seaforth Beavers in the
WOAA while Jim Russell plays with the Bank Boys in
the local Rec league and Don "Boom" Gravett, coach of
the Hanover junior team this year should still be in
reasonable playing condition,
Most of the former Mohawks already contacted
are enthusiastic about the chance to renew
acquaintances.
Among others that will be asked to perform in
the exhibition tilt are Larry Heideman, Red Loader,
Bud Dietrich, Dick McFalls, Frank Anderson, Bill
Oberle, Bill Wharmsby, John Trendle, Doug Thiel, Barry
Doak, Bill Franklin, Bob Coates and probably Bob
White who is now coaching the junior Hawks.
We have probably missed some, but they all will
be contacted within the next few days by Bob Baynham
and Bill Musser, who was on the executive of the
Mohawks at that time.
The editor, who occupies the next office was also
a member of the Mohawks but when we first mentioned
this to him he was not quite as enthusiastic as some of
the others and suggested the midgets might provide a
little more equal competition. It seems his hockey skills
have been transferred to the snowmobile.
• We hope this game can be arranged and know
district fans will jump at the opportunity to see their
old favorites back in action despite the fact they may be
a little slower afoot and thinner along the hair line.
The day will start off at eight o'clock in the
morning with five continuous hours of house league
action taking in novice, pee wee, squirts and mites.
Starting at one o'clock the Exeter all-star teams
will take to the ice with outside teams providing the
opposition. Each all-star coach will be responsible for
obtaining suitable competition.
The all-star games will include novice, pee wee,
bantam and midget and will continue until five o clock.
It is expected the bantam house leaguers will then take
over for an hour leaving the 6-7 hour for flooding the
ice surface.
At seven o'clock preceding the feature attraction,
the local squirts, a group of boys, eight years of age and
under will display their wares, probably against a team
from Zurich.
This Exeter team faced their first actual
competition in Zurich Sunday afternoon and were
edged 6-5. It was the first time the local youngsters have
used the full length of the ice surface and the first time
that the goalies wore pads.
Attendance at Minor Hockey Day is one way we
have of showing our appreciation to the local
Association and the many coaches and managers that
give many hours of their time and dollars out of their
own pocket to help the minor hockey program.
Curlers On The Move
The Exeter curling club is being well represented
for the second consecutive year in Ontario playdowns.
Tuesday of this week, Helen Burton skipped her
rink to the district 3 championship and the right to
advance to the Ontario finals in Welland from February
23-26.
This is Mrs. Burton's second trip along with
vice-skip Ellen Knight. Other members of the rink make
their first start in provincial playoffs are Marg Murley
and Lee Dobbs,
In men's play Jim Hewitt and his foursome will
be in action on Exeter ice, Saturday in a bid to
represent zone 13 in the Consols playoffs in Oshawa in
February.
The Hewitt rink will be meeting a Walkerton rink
in a best-of-three series for the right to advance to
Oshawa.
Anyone wishing to see top notch curling,
Saturday will be more than welcome to drop up to the
Exeter curling club.
Hewitt, who is recovering from a bout of
pneumonia is not certain he will be able to take part
himself. If he is still sidelined Gerry Finnen will handle
the skipping duties. The other members of the rink are
Jim Finnen, Bob Coates and Doug McArthur.
Hairpins move ahead
