for decorator
Tops club girls
off to good start
Lucan and District Tops Club
held their first meeting of the
. year, Wednesday, January 7, at
the home of their leader, with
10 members present.
Such a successful loss of
weight in 1969, made members
determined to keep up the good
work in 1970. One of the newer
members had lost 47 lbs. in 10
months. She will be Queen at
the Convention.
A calorie chart had to be
made up by each member to be
given in at next meeting.

Edward John Barnes, 77, died
in Forest Glenn Nursing Home,
Newmarket, Ontario,
Wednesday, January 7, W70.
Mr. Barnes was an interior
decorator for Eaton's until his
retirement.
He is survived by his wife,
Gertrude Reith, of Toronto,
formerly of Lucan, a son,
Douglas of Islington, and a
daughter Mrs. Roy Bonner
(Beryl) of Stouffville, Also
surviving are seven
grandchildren.
The body rested at the Murdy
Funeral Home, Lucan, where
Rev. W. C. Tupling held the
funeral service, Friday, January
9. Interment in St. James
Cemetery, Clandeboye.
Pallbearers were Hamilton
Hodgins, Austin Hodgins, Fraser
Thompson, Russ Watson, Jack
Watson and Blair Bonner.

Sunday saw the installation
of our 1970 executive at Branch
540. Comrade Reg Lovell of
Glencoe served as the installing
WA ladies
elect slate
interested in participating in
darts, euchre, cribbage or
shuffleboard are urged to turn
out. We will be competing
against the other nine branches
in Zone A-5 each Friday night
for the next three months.
Our Novice, Pee Wee and
Bantam Hockey teams were each
nosed out of the Silver Stick
Tournament by one goal
margins. The Novice lost their
first game by a 3-2 score while
the Pee Wees were downing
Sarnia Indians 20.2 and the
Bantams squeaked out a 2-1
overtime win over Alvinston.
In the second round the Pee
Wees fell to Dorchester 3-2 while
the Bantams were overcome by
Ilderton by an identical 3.2
score.
Carl Mickles' Pee Wees are
still hanging on to first place in
the Shamrock League but are
encountering a stiff contender in
this Dorchester squad.
Entertainment has resumed
each Saturday night in the
lounge and plans are already
under way for the big Valentine
Ball. Tim MacFarlane and the
Cardinals are returning for this
one.

Our Zone Sports program
commences this Friday night in
Lucan and all members who are
waist, and heart-shape neckline
outlined in frills of the same
material. Janet Gilmour of
Clandeboye, cousin of the bride,
as flowergirl wore a floor length
dress of white polyester crepe
with a sash of cerise to match
the bridesmaids' gowns. These
attendants all carried balls of
white baby mums accented with
matching cerise ribbon.
The best man was Eric
Chovancek of London and the
ushers, Brian Ankers of Lucan,
'brother of the bride and Jim
Thompson of London.
Miss Maureen Smith of Lucan
sang two solos accompanied by
Mrs. Clarence Hardy.
For a reception held at the
Dufferin Hotel, Centralia the
bride's mother wore a green
dress with gold hat and brown
accessories. She was assisted by
the groom's mother in a powder
blue dress with hat to match and
navy accessories.
On leaving for a wedding trip
to Niagara Falls the bride had
chosen a jade green wool dres.s,
brown accessories and a corsage
of gold roses.
Their future home will be in
Moose Jaw where the groom will
be resuming his training as a
pilot with the Canadian Forces.
Holy Trinity Church, Lucan
was decorated with candelabra,
white snapdragons and roses,
with a candle on a standard at
the end of each pew, when Rev.
R. A, Carson united in holy
matrimony, by a double-ring
ceremony, Linda Elizabeth
Ankers and Wayne Curtis
Thompson, at 6:30 n. m.

The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Donald F. Ankers,
of Lucan, and the groom is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis
Thompson of RR 3 Komoka.
Given in marriage by her
father the bride had chosen a
floor-length gown, resembling a
Russian peasant design, of white
crepe, with a slightly raised
waistline. Wide Venise lace
smoothly aproned the front.
Full peasant sleeves were pulled
close around the wrists with
deep banding of matching lace.
Her cathedral-Iength veil fell
from a bonnet-style headdress.
She carried a cascade of white
roses and carnations.
Mrs. Chovancek, of London,
as matron of honor, Debbie and
Ellie Thompson, sisters of the
groom, of Komoka, wore
floor-length gowns of soft cerise
colored chiffon, with empire

ANGLICAN
At the morning service last
Sunday at Holy Trinity Anglican
Church, Rev. R. A. Carson
preached on a theology of
missions. He said that the
Christian was part of a universal
community; he worshipped the
universal God and because of
this man is concerned with his
fellow men, whether in the
Christian church or outside the
church.
Next Sunday January 18 the
annual pot luck supper and
vestry meeting will be held at
6:30 pm. Films for the children
will be shown in the parish hall.

The Anglican Youth
Movement met January 5 and
made plans for their meetings
for the month. Last Sunday they
attended Holy Communion at
8:00 am. They plan to visit the
congregation and invite members
to attend church in Lent and to
support the World Hunger
campaign of the diocese.
Saturday, January 17 they will
show films to the children in the
parish hall at 10:00 am.

-The Anglican Church Women
met in the parish hall January 7
when plans where made for
future meetings. It was decided
to begin each meeting with ' a
Bible study of ten minutes.
UNITED CHURCH
Rev. W. C. Tupling's sermon
at the morning service at Lucan
United Church was entitled
"Messengers for God". Donna
McLellan and David Smith read
the lesson.
Sunday next will start the
ecumenical week of prayer and
Rev. R. A. Carson will conduct a
special service at the Lucan
United Church at 8:00 pm to
which everyone is welcome of
whatever denomination.
The United Church annual
congregational meeting has been
postponed and will be held
January 29 at 8:00 pm.

The funeral service for Mrs.
A. J. Abbott, 98, of Lansing,
Mich., wife of the late Dr.
Abbott, was held Dec. 19, 1969
with interment in Riverside
Cemetery, Albion Mich. Dr.
Abbott, a former Lucanite, was
an uncle of Mrs. Hubert Jones of
Exeter and Miss Lina Abbott of
London.
Miss Ruth Crow of London,
was a weekend guest of Miss
Susan Crozier.

25TH ANNIVERSARY
Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Blake were
pleasantly surprised on Saturday
evening at the Lucan Legion Hall
when 200 neighbors and
relatives gathered to honour
them on their 25th wedding
anniversary.
Their three daughters and
their husbands, Mr. & Mrs. Keith
Simpson, Clandeboye; Mr. &
Mrs. Peter Shipley, Lucan; and
Mr. & Mrs. Wayne,Redick,
Sarnia, planned the party.
Clare Stanley, Lucan,
supplied the music.
Mr. & Mrs. Blake received
many gifts and a beautiful cake.
A smorgasbord lunch was served
to the guests.

Mrs. Harvey Steeper was
hostess for the January meeting.
The members were told that this
is the time for endings and new
beginnings too, and that golden
opportunities are available to us
to work and build upon.
Everyone joined in the singing of
"Standing at the Portal" of the
opening Vear", followed by a
New Years Prayer by Mrs. Reta
Allison, Mrs. Arnold Wasnidge
favored with an _appropriate
poem and Kathleen Morley read
a portion of the 3rd chapter of
Ecclesiastes.
"Time" was the topic of a
talk by Mrs. Marjorie Steeper.
She stated that we are all
answerable for the use Of our
time, as well as the use of our
abilities. A poem expressing the
apparent lack of time for prayer
was read and asking the ladies to
remember Jesus taught us to
pray,
Mrs. Reta Allison read a
poem "The Busy One." Records
referring to "Hunger" and
"Poverty" were played,
replacing the Study Book. After
the prayer by Mrs. Marjorie
Steeper for the hungry and
ill-clad people of the world the
meeting was turned over to the
president Mrs. William Penton
for the business. The tell call
was answered by 13 present
Mrs. Fraser Dixon gave the
Annual treasurer report.
A pot luck supper for
congregational meeting was
planned for January 19.
