Doll collection hobby
By MRS. HAROLD DAVIS
Flowers in St. Paul's Anglican
Church and Kirkton United
Church, Sunday were in memory
of Mrs. Annie Pearson.
Mrs. Harvey Squire is a
patient in St. Joseph's Hospital,
London.
Mr:& Mrs. Everett Doupe are
staying with their son, Mr. &
Mrs. Lorne Doupe.
Mr. Miller McCurdy is a
patient in Victoria Hospital,
London.
She buys up a supply of
undressed dolls . . . preferably
about 12 inches in height and
commences to design and make
their clothes as the 'spirit moves
her'. Her ideas come from
magazines, the encyclopedia,
history and nursery .rhyme
books and T,V. programs.
Her famous people dolls
include Martha Washington,
Queen Victoria, Mary Lincoln,
M am i Eisenhower, Jacki
Kenqedy and Lady Bird
Johnston.
Red Riding Hood, Bo Peep,
Cioldilocks, Little Miss Muffett
and Maid Marion are just a few of
the story book characters she
has dressed.
STRIVES FOR DETAIL
Mrs. Cann strives for
authenticity and detail in the
design and in the materials used.
Much of the cloth she employs is
donated by interested friends
who, knowing of her hobby save
and collect it for her.
Always a lover of dolls, Mrs.
Cann says she finds dressing
them exciting. "The only
trouble is I get so wrapped up in
what I'm doing that I find it
difficult to stop even for a
breather until the doll is
completely finished."

TRAQUAIR
More and more people are
taking up a hobby and this can
be anything a person likes to do
in his spare time for relaxation,
knowledge and fun.
A hobbyist can be of any age
to benefit from a hobby but
doctors and phycologists are
finding much can be gained for
patients, recovering from
illnesses, for the bedndden and
shut-in who have something
creative and interesting to do
that keeps them from thinking
about themselves.
In this day when people are
retiring at an age much earlier
than before it is the lucky and
smart person who has cultivated
a hobby he will continue to
enjoy in his later years with his
newly found leisure time.
Dr. William Osier, the famous
Canadian doctor felt the value of
hobbies so important that he
expressed this opinions, "No
man is really happy or safe
without a hobby, and it makes
precious little difference what
the outside interest may be . . .
botony, beetles, or butterflies;
roses, tulips, irises; fishing,
mountaineering, or antiques . . .
anything will do so long as he
straddles a hobby horie and
rides it hard."
ACTIVE HOBBIEST
Mrs. G.A. Cann, William
Street, Exeter is one of those
who follows this advise and rides
her hobbies hard. Trained as a
girl to be a milliner she has
always been creative with her
needle. Over the years she has
turned out many beautiful
quilts, and a bountiful amount
of intricate crocheting and
embroidry.
However, about a year ago
she tired of these needlecraft
activities and turned to the
fascinating art of dressing dolls.
Since then she has made
costumes for over 30 dolls. To
add to this collection, friends
learning of her new interest have
brought her dolls from their
travels to Holland, Spain, Korea,
Japan, Hong Kong, India,
Mexico, the United States and
the far north.
DESIGNS DOLL COSTUMES
Much as Mrs. Cann
appreciates these it is still the
dolls for which she sews that
give her the most pleasure and
satisfaction.
Stratford, died Saturday at
Spruce Lodge, Stratford.
She was a daughter of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dalrymple
and was born in Tuckersmith
Township 85 years ago.
She is survived by several
nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held from the
Heath-Leslie Funeral Home,
Mitchell, Monday with
temporary entombment in
Woodland Cemetery chapel.
Several friends from this
community were in attendance
at the funeral service.
