In their next action, the Jets

unusual away from home game,
Tuesday night.

win over Fergus.
Dave Webster started the

effort with Dusty Aldis and Ron
Cauduro at the .53 second mark.

This column for the next
couple of weeks will be devoted
to basic facts and fundamentals
on figure skating.
There are four main divisions
of figure skating, namely figures,
free skating, dancing and free
dance and pair skating.
Figures are practised on small
sections of the ice called
"patches". During the patch
session, the skaters who are
advanced enough to do so
"rent" a section of the ice on
which to practise figure eights,
etc.
The ice is marked off in strips
about 18 feet wide, and one half
of each strip is a "patch", It is
usual for the figures of the
skater on one end of the strip to
overlap with the figures of the
other skater, towards the end of
the patch period, but the skaters
must show reasonable
consideration ,of the rights of
others. •
There are eight figure tests
after the Preliminary Test.
Free skating is the term
applied to such movements in
skating as jumps, spins, spirals,
etc. It is quite separate from
figures and requires separate
lessons if much progress is
expected. And with respect to
free skating, it isn't what
movements a skater can perform
that counts, but the way the
movements are performed.
If you , would like a
demonstration of the basic
jumps, etc., get together with a
few others who are also
In the exhibition game against

interested and ask a member of
the executive if he (or she) can
arrange such a demonstration for
you.
There are five free skating
tests: Bronze, Silver, Sixth,
Seventh and Eighth (or Gold).
Dancing is one of the nicest
and most enjoyable forms of
figure skating. Unfortunately,
most clubs have too few boys,
and most of the dance tests
require a "couple" (boy and
girl).
There are 20 set dances,
divided for the test purposes
into Preliminary, Junior Bronze,
Senior Bronze, Silver, and Senior
Silver (with three dances each)
and Gold (with five dances).
Preliminary — Dutch Waltz,
Swing Dance and Canasta Tango
— and Junior Bronze — Willow
Waltz, Ten-Fox and Fiesta
Tango — may be skated without
a male partner, if none is
available.
There are two Free Dance
Tests: Silver Free Dance and
Gold Free Dance. These are only
of interest to quite advanced
skaters.
There are three pair tests:
Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Hockey is like a horse-race;
you just think that you know
who the winner will be. Last
Wednesday night the fifth place
Mitchell Hawks, who have
managed only four wins so far
this season, arrived in Lucan
with a young man by the name
of Bill Wolfe in the nets. Young
Wolfe held the Irish to four goals
while his team-mates scored six
times, and the Irish learned that
no team in the league can be
taken lightly.
The Lucan players executed
their plays properly but lacked
the fire that makes the
difference between winning and
losing. Defenceman Jeff Craig
scored twice for the Irish while
defenceman Brad Barkley and
forward Dennis Carty each hit
for singles. For the Mitchell
Hawks Dave Flanagan got two

In Zurich on Sunday
afternoon the Irish arrived in
town ready to play hockey, and
did so, defeating second-place
Zurich Dominions seven to four,
before a very disappointed home
crowd.
In the first period Captain
Tom Hodgins scored two goals,
while Steve English scored a
single on a shot from centre ice.
Zurich was assessed three
penalties and the Irish two. In
the second period Dennis Burt,
Brad Barkley, and Tom

Skiing k
One of the most important
aspects of skiing is learning how
to ski under control. By being in
control you improve your
safety, the safety of others, and
your style.
To be in control you must
adjust your speed to the
conditions of the hill, the snow,
and your ability.
One of the secrets of good
control is simply this, start your
run by skiing across the hill. This
helps for two reasons, naturally
your speed will build up more
slowly, but more importantly
this makes it very easy to make
your first turn.
When you are skiing across
the hill it becomes easy to start a
turn down the hill and by
continuing your turn (which is
always easier than starting one)
you will again be in a traverse
across the hill. It is important
that you start your first turn as
soon as possible. This is the key
to good control, by turning early
and often, you can get the feel
of the hill and gradually increase
your speed.
Remember, by staying in
control you'll look better, feel
better, and you'll be surprised
how fast your skiing will
improve.

— Zurich two.
At 2:55 of the third period
Dennis Burt hit for his second
goal of the afternoon to
complete the Irish scoring. John
Loader and John MacKinley
scored for the Dominions who
were unable to mount a
concentrated attack, as the
Lucan defence tightened up.
Brad Barkley and Steve English
proved to be the best defensive
unit on the ice. In the third
period Jeff Craig picked up his
third penalty of the afternoon,
Andy Hardy and Dennis Carty
were assessed two minutes each
for roughing and cross-checking
respectively. Zurich lost four
men for a total of eight minutes.
The game ended up with a total
of twenty-two penalties, eleven
for each team.
Last night the high-flying
Exeter Hawks invaded Lucan,
and tomorrow night the
Lambeth Flyers will be here for
a game. This is the first time this
season that the Lucan fans have
had the opportunity to see two
home games in three days. Hope
you were on hand for one or
both of these games to pick your
own three stars.
