FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh.
Minor week.
coming
The annual observance of Minor Hockey Week
across Canada begins on Saturday, January 24,
according to information reaching, our desk last week
from the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association.
While no arrangements have been made as yet by
the Exeter Minor Hockey Association, we would hope
this group would quickly make plans for a full day of
hockey when every player registered with the EMHA
has a chance to show his talents for the benefit of his
parents, other relatives and friends,
This Saturday, January 17, Minor Hockey Day
will be observed at the Zurich arena and the following
Saturday will be a gala day at the St. Marys arena,
We received a bulletin on the St. Marys festivities
from Len Love, recreation director and Harvey Pfaff,
president of the St. Marys Minor Hockey Association,
who is a former resident of the Dashwood and Exeter
areas.
The closing feature attraction of the St. Marys
day on January 24 will be an exhibition game between
the Lucan-Ilderton Jets and an all-star team from the St.
Marys town league and the North Oxford Rural league.
No less than eight members of the current Jet
club performed formerly with the St, Marys 1.4ncoins in
Junior "B" company.
Still At It
Next Tuesday's National hockey league all-star
game to be played in St. Louis will mark the 21st
appearance in the annual classic for big No. 9 of the
Detroit Red Wings.
Gordie Howe, at the age of 41 was given 53
points in the balloting for the right wing spot by sports
writers in the eastern division.
Since Howe came into the NHL he has missed
only the 1947 and 1953 all-star games and this will
mark his 13th consecutive appearance. Maurice
(Rocket) Richard, also appeared in the same number of
games, consecutively.
Howe also holds most of the all-star scoring
records. In addition to the most games played, he has
the most goals, nine, the most assists, eight, leads in
points with 17, has served 25 minutes in penalties and
shares the record of four points in one game with
former team-mate Ted Lindsay.
The other significant fact of the all-star selections
was the unanimous choice of Bobby Orr of the Boston
Bruins to a defence position, Orr received the maximum
number of votes possible, 90.
Orr, who is well on the way to becoming the
league's leading scorer this year and certainly will
shatter all scoring marks for a defenceman has been the
Bruin leader since he joined the Bruins three years ago.
Orr's future in the NHL is probably best
exemplified by a statement by veteran defenceman
Harry Howell.
When Howell, then with the Rangers won the
James Norris Memorial Trophy in 1966-67 as the
league's best defenceman, he said, "I've been around for
fifteen years and thank God I have finally won it. .I have,
a feeling that fox the next twenty years it will be known
as the Bobby Orr trophy.
Good Season
District hockey fans have been treated to a lot of
interesting action so far this winter and the way the
teams are performing, the season is far from over.
At least three or four clubs have shown they have
the ability to move down the playoff trail toward league
and possibly provincial championships.
Right in Exeter, two teams are right in
contention. The junior Hawks under the capable
coaching of Bob White have performed well all season
and have a good shot at the Ontario "D" title.
When we make a statement like that we expect to
get a lot of opposition from our friends in Zurich and
Lucan. The junior teams in these two communities are
right in the thick of things and the local group playoffs
should be more than interesting.
The other Exeter team with a good chance of
going places is the Kinsmen sponsored midget team,
coached by former Hawk, Bill Chipchase.
The hustling club, made up of quite a few
members of 'last year's good bantam club are still
unbeaten in Shamrock league play and will also give a
good account of themselves in the playoffs.
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets, currently leading the
OHA Intermediate "B" grouping certainly have the
talent this year to go all the way to ,an Ontario
championship.
Their biggest opposition will again likely come
from their old-time nemesis from Durham. The Huskies
and Jets have gone into overtime in both games played
at Huron Park this year with each team winning once.
Jack Nairn has taken over the coaching duties and
one can be assured the popular mink rancher from the
St. Marys district will get the best from his fellow
players,
Nairn takes over the coaching duties from Steve
Storey while Don Urbshott continues as manager of the
club. We stated incorrectly last week that Storey and
Urbshott had shared the coaching.
The Crediton Tigers, WOAA champs for the past
two seasons are having a bit of trouble in regular
intermediate play. This club also has the potential to
rebound and make itself heard from in the playoffs. The
Seaforth Beavers in their first start in the WOAA look
like the class of the league at the moment.

EXETER RINK HEADING TOWARD CONSOLS —An Exeter rink skipped by Jim Hewitt moved one
step closer to the British Consols curling playoff in Oshawa in February by winning the Zone 13A
championship at Huron Park, Saturday. The local curlers now move against a Walkerton foursome for
the right to move on to the provincial final. Skip Hewitt, who was hospitalized with pneumonia early
this week is shown above being congratulated by Jack Underwood of the Huron Park club. Other
members of the rink are, from the left, Doug McArthur, Bob Coates and Gerry Finnen. T-A photo.
