District official pays visit
to Lions of Lucan, district
Mary Monica O'Shea and
Alan Louis Porter exchanged
wedding vows in a late fall
ceremony at St. Peter's
Cathedral Basilica, London. Rev.
J. M. Williams officiated at the
double ring service.
The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. James L. O'Shea,
Granton and the groom's parents
Upon entering a New Year, it
is always interesting to look
back to some of the
achievements, as well as the
disappointments of the past
year, and 1969 proved to be full
of both.
Sub-Division plans have not
borne fruit, but a number of
houses have been built
throughout the village.
Natural gas was conveyed to
the district when the Union Gas
pipeline was extended from
Elginfield through Biddulph and
Lucan, and many residents have
availed. themselves of this
service.
A strike of employees at the
Central Hotel ended after 20
weeks, with the strikers
obtaining most of the
concessions they asked.
There was one house fire
which necessitated a family
having to find a new home. That
was a house on Butler Street,
occupied by the Eemers' family,
and a farm house in London
Township was found; which
suited their requirements.
Many young people were
married during the year,
including 2 O.P.P. officers; a
bridegroom whose mother came
from England for the wedding; a
bride who had 3 ministers
present, 2 being relatives; and
the daughter of a Lucan doctor.
Several well-known Lucanites
died during the year, the most
tragic being the death of Mr. and
Mrs. Hugh Toohey in a car
collision at the entrance to their
own driveway.
A number of achievements
were accomplished during the
year by adults, but most
noticeably by children. Mr.
James W. Smith had the honour
to be elected Deputy Zone

team was rejuvenated this year

in Boy Scouts and Cubs seems to
have faded, and -members of the

discussed Unity.
While the ministers of the
United and Anglican Churches
took alternating vacations the

CGIT group
donates toys
Lucan Clandeboye C.G.I.T.
met in the Lucan United Church
kitchen, Monday December 22
to pack Christmas baskets for
the shut-ins of Lucan and
Clandeboye. After the delivery
of the baskets, the girls returned
for supper. The whole event was
most disappointing for the
leaders, and the few girls who
attended to work.
Since the C.G.I.T. funds were
very limited, the girls had
decided at a previous meeting to
donate some of the articles for
the baskets. The suggestion was
very enthusiastically passed by
all the girls, and indeed they
thought it a shame to neglect the
aged and shut-ins, but with such
poor attendance, it would
appear that the girls either
forgot or could not be bothered.
The girls had also expressed
the desire to help a needy family
with Christmas groceries, and
money was set aside for this
purpose. The Lions Club were
asked for advice as to a needy
family, but the leaders were
informed that, as far as was
known, every family in the
district had been provided for.
With the helpful advice from
Mr. Tupling it was decided to
buy toys for children who would
not otherwise receive any. This
was done by the leaders.
