John Patterson was born in Hensall on December 24 in 1872 and spent most of his teen-age life in the village before moving to Toronto. He left school at the age of nine to assist his father in the operation of a lumber mill and went to Collingwood to work in a similar operation when the Hensall mill was destroyed by fire in 1891. JOHN PATTERSON Mr. Patterson continued to follow the lumber business in Toronto in several capacities and retired in 1955 at the age of 83 when his wife passed away. Although his hearing and eyesight is failing slightly, Mr. Patterson is very spry and spends a lot of time writing letters. He has never been sick a day in his life and his only trips to hospital has been because of accidents. Asked for the recipe for his long life, Patterson told the T-A "good hard work and the ability to keep out of trouble are two of the reasons. I feel no one in Ontario has had a better life than I have had." Asked about world conditions today, he said, "the trouble today is people have forgotten God entirely. This is a big mistake. Things won't change until all nations get down to prayer." On politics Patterson commented, "I voted for Trudeau last time, he is going to be all right." PICTURING NATIVITY The Christmas crib or presepio is an especially treasured part of the Portuguese holiday celebration. Every home and church seems to have one, and some of those in the churches are masterpieces of art, Especially famous is the presepio in Estrella Church, Lisbon. This Nativity scene depicts the people of Bethlehem, in terra cotta figures. Unique among the crowd, are the figures of an elephant and a bagpiper.
