Grand Bend women hear
the meaning of Christmas

GRAND BEND
The Grand Bend Women's
Institute held their Christmas
meeting Thursday in the town
hall with the Branch Directors,
Mrs. Myrtle McGregor, Mrs. Alex
Hamilton and Mrs. Carman
Lovie in charge.
Roll Call was a gift for a
patient in hospital, which will be
taken to the Ontario Hospital,
Goderich.
The motto was "If thou hast

Sunday evening the Christmas
program of Zion United Church
Sunday School was presented,
with Eric Finkbeiner,
superintendent, as chairman.
There were recitations, exercises
and plays; there were musical
numbers in song, on the organ
and piano, on the accordion, the
guitar and the violin. White Gift
offerings were presented by the
classes.

Twenty-nine members of the
Crediton Women's Institute sat
down to a delicious turkey
dinner the evening of December
17.
After dinner, the regular
meeting was opened with the
Ode and Collect and the singing
of "0 Little Town of
Bethlehem". Roll call was
answered by "A family tradition
carried on in our home."
Mrs. Harvey Hodgins presided
over the business. The West
Christmas Eve at 11 p.m. Then
on Christmas Day you may join
the fellowship in Holy Trinity
Church at 11 a.m. for a quiet
but meaningful Holy
Communion. On the Sunday
following, December 28 at 11
a.m. the ancient story of
Christmas will be told in lesson
and song.

drawn for 1970. Six tables of
Court Whist " were enjoyed.

Penhale and Mrs. E. Neil; low,
Mrs. I. Finkbeiner and Mrs. C.
Sims; hidden score, Mrs. W.
Weber.
Twenty-four boxes of treats,
for shut-ins were prepared.

Hendrick, Mrs. R. Krueger and
Mrs. I. Finkbeiner.
YOUNG PEOPLES
Monday evening the young
people people of Zion United
Church went carolling at the
Bluewater Rest Home. They
returned to Crediton to sing for
the shut-ins of the village, then
went to the manse with Rev. &
Mrs. Douglas Warren for
refreshments.

to arrange an interesting bus-trip
in the New Year.
Mrs. Cec Robb as No. 1
Branch Director was to have
given a talk on "Scatter
Gladness, Joy and Mirth, all
along the Ways of Earth,"
introducing readings by Mrs.
Burns Smith, on "Gladness." As
Mrs. Robb was unable to be
present, Mrs. Saward read from
her notes. Mrs. Lockyer played
two verses of the Hymn, "As
with Gladness men of old", Mrs.
Saward closing the program by
Mrs. Robb's comments on it.
Mrs. Snelgrove with the help
of her son, Michael, then
distributed the presents provided
by each "Secret Friend." At this
time the names were revealed
and there were many surprises.
Names were drawn for a
"Secret Friend" for the coming
year.
Each member had brought a
gift which will be taken to the
Rescue Mission in London.
Mrs. Alec Young moved a
vote of thanks to the hostess,
Mrs. Snelgrove for the use of her
house.
Next meeting, January 15,
will be held at the home of Mrs.
Wesley Atkinson, the convener
Mrs. R. R. Crozier, the subject
Citizenship and Education.

Sunday last was a Special
Christmas Service at Lucan
United Church, Rev. W. C.
Tupling being in charge. Debbie
Stanley and Karen Hodgson read
the Scripture Lessons.
Mr. Tupling's Sermon was
entitled, "Is there room in your
heart for Jesus?"
A carol service will be held at
11 p.m. Christmas Eve with
several Christmas Anthems by
the Senior Choir, as well as the
carol-singing.
Mrs. Tupling entertained the
Senior Choir at the Manse after
Choir practice, Wednesday last.
Sunday Church School will be
having a skating party December
29, at the Arena, followed by
refreshments at the Church.
COUPLES' CLUB
The United Church Couples'
Club held a pot-luck supper
Tuesday last before their regular
meeting. There were 15 member
couples attending and two new
couples joined.
Worship service was in the
charge of Mr. & Mrs. Thomas
Barr, Mr. & Mrs. Robert
Patterson and Mr. & Mrs.
Gordon Froats. Robert
Patterson read from the
Scriptures, Mrs. Barr
accompanied Christmas songs at
the piano and also read a
Christmas story. Mrs. Gordon
Froats led in prayer.
The Club agreed to adopt an
orphan from the Dr. Graham
Home, and will assist an Indian
girl, as their project in the New
Year.
Officers for next year were
installed, as follows: Mr. & Mrs.
Robert Patterson, presidents;
Mr. & Mrs. Stuart McLellan,
vice-presidents; Mr. & Mrs.
William Froats, secretaries; Mr.
& Mrs. Don Abbott, treasurers,
Mr. & Mrs. Don Maguire,
membership committee.
Then Santa came with gifts.
Each gift had a poem attached
which had been written by the
giver, pertaining to something
personal to the receiver, but not
signed.
Hostesses served Christmas
cake and dainty cookies with tea
and coffee, to close a very
enjoyable evening.

Lucan-Clandeboye Hi-C met
at the home of Mrs. Dave Park
for a social evening and folk
service arranged by the
executive.
Games were played, and lunch
served by the hostess.

Once again we enter the great
Festival of Christmas,
brainwashed as we are by the
communications media into
thinking of Christmas as a time
to spend money, we are apt to
miss the real life of the season.
Christmas is Christ's Day, not
man's day, nor children's day,
not the poor's day, and so on.
Because it is Christ's day
everyone is blessed, Jesus Christ
is Love in the Flesh, He is God.
