Before we all go rushing off to the slopes there are a few things we can do to prepare for a season of safe skiing. All equipment should be gone over very carefully. Check the ski bases for gouges, if there are any fix them now before they get worse. (You can buy material for this.) Next, check your edges, are they loose? It's easier to tighten them now than to replace a piece later. Most important of all is the bindings. These should be sprayed with silicone to keep them moving freely, If you think adjustments are necessary have a specialist make them. (His fees are less than the good folks at a hospital.) You've finished the important things now but don't forget to waterproof your boots and check your laces. With these things done and a coat of wax on your skis you'll be ready for a fun-filled safe day in our Canadian winter. By the way, while you're at it a light coat of wax on the top of your skis will prevent the snow from sticking. Some words of advice for Christmas shoppers. Remember, the most important pieces of equipment are the boots, next are the bindings, skis, clothes and poles, in that order. In future columns we'll be covering local events. If you have any information you'd like to see in this column, drop a line to SKIING care of the T-A. Irish downed by Zurich By CLARE STANLEY December 10th the Zurich Dominions downed Lucan Irish Six by a 4-3 score. Both teams provided the largest crowd of the season with an exciting hockey exhibition. Cheap penalties that plagued the Irish at the beginning of the season have decreased and the fans are seeing Junior hockey at its best. This game saw only twelve penalties called, one only being a major. The scorers for Lucan were Tom Hodgins with two goals, and Dennis Burt with a single which came at 19.28 of the third period, when the Lucan net was left vacant in favour of an extra forward. Bill Sterling scored twice with singles going to John Loader and Ron Corriveau for the Zurich Dominions. The first star was the goal-tender for Zurich Gary Jeffrey who stopped thirty-one Irish attempts. Second star went to Bill Sterling of Zurich for his offensive and defensive play. Third star was awarded to the Irish Captain Tom Hodgins. The referees for the game were Gus Bussey and Murray Butcher. Lucan fans in greater number are travelling to the away-from-home games and a second bus is being considered by the Lucan executive. The Irish have indicated they would like to give the fans third place in the league as a gift for Craig. The occasion was their 40th wedding anniversary.
