This is our second last sports column of the year as we expect to finish off the year with Tuesday's issue. We have come across what we feel are a few good hockey jokes and it may be a good way to finish off the year, They could make some of our friends who are Toronto Maple Leaf fans smile a little. So far this year, they have had nothing to smile about. Here we go with a few: Last Christmas some members of the Montreal Canadiens received holiday cards from their team-mates. Gump Worsley's fear of flying is no laughing matter, but even the veteran goalie chuckled over this one. "Want a scoop?" Henri Richard, the Montreal centre asked a sports writer. "Okay I'm listening was the reply. "I got my Christmas card from Gump today. "So", "He sent it airmail." * Then Bill Surette, a representative for a hockey stick company, woke up after a half-hour snooze on his flight from Montreal to London, Ontario, He expected that he'd shortly be watching the afternoon workout of the Boston Bruins in the Ontario city. Surette inquired how much longer the flight would take and was told, "a few hours yet, sir." Rather strange, he thought, because previous flights had taken only one hour. "We are going to London, Ontario, are we not?" he asked. "Oh, no, sir. This one goes to London, England," replied the stewardess. "When we got to England," Surette said, "I got the feeling they thought I was trying to sneak into the country. I had no visa, no nothing. Finally after talking quite a bit about hockey, they accepted what I had told them and everybody had a big laugh." Two hours later, he was on another flight from London, England to Montreal. He then took another plane to Toronto and hired a car for the final leg of his journey to London, Ontario. "I don't know whether my wife will believe me or not when I get back to Boston," Surette chuckled. "Just to make sure I sent two postcards home from London—London, England, that is." • * * * John Ferguson, the Canadiens' aggressive left wing, threw an elbow at Eddie Joyal of the L.A. Kings in one game last year. Joyal retaliated mildly and then challenged the rugged Montreal player. Ferguson reacted to the invitation by dropping his gloves, hitting Joyal with a flurry of punches and then standing back while the L.A. player crumpled to the ice. Referee Bill Friday gave Ferguson a five-minute penalty for fighting while Joyal wasn't penalized. "Gee whiz, Mr. Friday," complained Ferguson, "Couldn't you at least give him a two-minute penalty?" "For what?" asked Friday, "all he was doing was covering up." "Well then, Mr. Friday," said Ferguson, "couldn't you give him two minutes for covering up?" * * Another time Ferguson had just scored a couple of goals to lead Montreal to victory. "You're only 611 goals behind Gordie Howe," someone reminded Ferguson. "Yeah, I know," Fergy said. "But I'm sure closing in on his penalty record." * * Terry Harper, the Canadien defenseman who isn't very popular with the Montreal fans, was working out his ailing knee during a team practice. The club had been in a slump and had not endeared itself to the Canadien followers. "I wish Harper would get back in the lineup," said Ralph Backstrom, the Canadiens' center. "Yeah," said another player. "We sure could use him." "If he got back," Backstrom said, "the Montreal fans could boo him and forget about booing the rest of us." * * * Noel Picard, St. Louis' big defenseman, scored a goal early last season and rushed into the net to grab the puck. "What did you save the puck for?" Coach Scotty Bowman asked him. "It was my first goal of the year," Picard answered. "Okay," said Bowman. A few days later, Picard scored another goal. Once more, he asked for the puck. "Why the hell are you saving that one?" Bowman asked him. "Because," Picard replied, "it broke my record of last season," Plant 235-0833 Residence 228.6961 WOAA INTERMEDIATE 'C' HOCKEY Sunday, Dec. 21 8:30 P.M.
