Traffic study
is continuing
The matter of traffic control
was raised again at Exeter
council's meeting, Monday, and
while no definite action was
taken, most members appeared
in agreement with the suggestion
that Ann St. should be made
one-way traffic between Main
and William Streets.
The traffic would be allowed
to move in a westerly direction
along the street.
The narrow street already
poses congestion problems, as
well as the fact that entry onto
Main St. is made difficult by
poor visibility and an incline, the
latter causing problems in the
winter.
Some thought was given to
banning parking on one side, but
no decision was made in that
regard either.
Council also endorsed a
suggestion for the addition of
several stop signs.
Westbound and eastbound
traffic will be stopped on Ann at
Marlboro and also on James at
Albert. Westbound traffic will be
stopped on John at William and
eastbound traffic will be stopped
on Mill at William and also on
Thomas at William.
In the latter two cases, the
streets reach a dead-end at
William, but at the present time
there are no stop signs.
Chief Ted Day, who studied
the streets along with Mayor
Jack Delbridge and Councillor
George Vriese, also suggested to
council that some thought
should be given to eliminating
left turns onto James and John
for southbound traffic on Main
St.
He said this was one of the
major causes for traffic jams, as
the traffic backed up when
southbound traffic stopped
while someone attempted to
make a left turn onto either side
street.
Councillor Ross Taylor
argued that these hold-ups in
traffic were beneficial in that
they enabled pedestrians get
across the street.
"People would never get
across the street if the traffic
wasn't stopped somewhere," he
argTutle' matter of the traffic
changes will be dealt With by
council in the new year.
In his report for the month Of
November, Chief Day reported
that 14- snowmobile operators
had received warnings, 16 driVers
had been warned under the
Highway Traffic Act, 12 had
