Each school, will receive an incentive grant, in addition to their regular allowance for books, to encourage book purchases. This grant will be based on present library size and will be figured on the sum paid the county library board this year. Elementary schools with less than 10 books per pupil in their library will be allowed $2 per pupil to spend on new books, provided that $5 per pupil has been spent by September 30 on such books from the school's regular supply budget, Schools with more than 10 books per pupil will receive only $1 per pupil with grants to secondary schools figured at this same lower rate. During the past year eight school principals decided they didn't want the county library service after September 1 and were permitted to use funds which would have been paid to the library board to buy their own books to build up their 16,:wwwwwwwwwk-wwwiekvvik.N. The board's 1969 budget provided $21,493 for the county library's service, and the board decided that $22,128 would be placed in the 1970 budget to provide the incentive grants for the various schools. It also will provide $3,915 for county library service up to April 1 for those schools which will be continuing such service. The schools which opted out of the county library arrangement as of September 1 were Biddulph, Lucan, Metcalfe, Oxbow, Parkview, River Heights, Valleyview and Willowdale, a total of 77 class rooms. They used funds totalling $2,746 a pro rate share of county library service costs, to acquire books of their own .election. It was pointed out that the majority of school principals considered the cost of the county library service as excessive. It figured out to about $90 per classroom. The principals were of the opinion that their present need was to add to the library collection by choosing books which the students and •the school program required rather than receive a specified number of books per classroom on loan from the county library without having any say in their selection. The April 1 date for terminating the existing arrangement was agreed upon because the county library exchanged all books on loan to the schools on Nov. 17 and the next exchange would occur in April. Instead the county library will withdraw its books then and not provide a new lot. Letter to the editor Backs leader choosing It appears that some of the Student Body at South Huron District High School are not aware of the purpose of a cheerleader. They seem to have the idea that a cheerleader is for "show" rather than to lead the crowd in cheering their teams to victory. A Cheerleader is - in every sense of the word; a Cheer LEADER! After reading the letters addressed to the cheerleaders in last week's edition of the South Huron Guardian I feel that an explanation is very much in need. It was quite evident that the authors behind the letters are not aware of the procedure which is used in choosing new girls for the cheerleading squad. There is only one restriction and that is that only girls from grades ten to twelve are elegible. The girls are given one week in which they are taught three cheers and a number of jumps which they must perform before the judges. Each girl is given the same time and consideration by the senior cheerleaders. In case of any favouritism the senior cheerleaders are not allowed to vote or have any choice in the junior selection. The judges are lutrisKy; L747.-4-V-511 Eat 411P: ' ---nl.a--->-orning--Z-may I help you?" carefully chosen and this year consisted of three staff members and three students holding important executive jobs in the school. Each judge receives a scoring sheet which states the different sections the numbered girls are to be scored on. Neatness, disposition, co-ordination, sharpness of movements, clarity of voice, jumps, over-all impression, and extra bonus marks for any extra stunts the individual girls may perform, makes up the scoring sheet. The judges do not compare marks throughout the competition, and on finishing the scores are tallied up and the girls receiving the highest marks win. This year we had planned on choosing six but some girls were so close that instead we took the top eight. This letter is not being written for the sake of those persons who wrote letters of complaint because I feel that unless these people can sign their names and stand up to what they are saying they must not have substantial evidence behind them. The cheerleaders are always open for suggestions, as any school organization is, and if any new ideas are available for choosing new girls we will gladly listen and come to some agreement. Many people do not realize the time and work involved in preparing for our new junior cheerleaders. I sincerely,i, hope that we have the studepf, body behind us! Sincerely, Patti Robinson Close battle in Ausable Only two points separate the first three teams in the standings of the Ausable Valley, Recreation hockey league.
