PROFESSIONAL LOOKING SCULPTURES like these can be made at home in any size using the
maximum of styroloam, wire, hits of cloth, paste and gold spray paint. Doerr photo.
Ontario R.N. association
has communication seminar
Last year Wendy Doerr
created some beautiful, exciting
and professional looking figures
for Christmas. Again this year,
during her days off from the
Stratford Hospital where she
works, she is back in the
business.
She is kind enough to share
her knowledge with us and if
you are interested in creating
something of lasting beauty here
is her method;
You will need one
styrofoam cone about 10
inches high or you may make
one of chicken wire; a small
styrofoam ball for the head;
strips of material of almost any
type of cloth except wool (to
obtain different textures you
may wish to use terry cloth,
linen or sheer); Some fine wire
(stove pipe) for shoulders and
hands; a dish of polyfilla (mixed
as per directions on box); gold
spray paint; bits of wool or
string for hair, and perhaps some
beads or sequins, etc.
Stand cone on newspaper.
Shove a piece of wire into the
ball head and the other end into
the neck of the cone. Wind a
piece of wire about 10" long
around the cone at shoulder
level. Bend a shoulder shape and
extend rest of wire down for
arms. Bend at the end into a
small loop for hands,
Dip the strips of material into
the polyfilla mixture. Run your
fingers down these to strip off
excess paste. Proceed to drape
your 'figure' with clothing. It is
best to begin with an
undergarment and then drape a
'choir gown over the top for a
flowing robe, You proceed by
folding, pleating and arranging
the wet folds of paste covered
cloth until you are satisfied.
For the head dip short pieces
of wool or heavy string into the
paste and arrange as hair on the
ball. A crown or halo of woven
yarn or braid can be set upon
the head now.
The hands may also be
wound with tiny bits of cloth.
Set aside to dry for several
days. When the figure is
thoroughly hardened and dried
spray with gold.

"Talk is not necessarily a
language just as a stone is not a
piece of sculpture." This was
one of the statements made at
the Communications Seminar
held at the Goderich Pyschiatric
Hospital last week.
The theme of the two-day
seminar, sponsored by the
Huron Chapter of the Ontario
Registered Nurses Association,
' was "Do you say what you
mean?"
95' of the 140 people who
attended were in the nursing
profession but there were
members from hospital auxiliary
and service clubs as well.
The two days were taken up
by viewing eight films which
presented problems in
communication between
individuals and in groups.
The audience was broken into
small groups which discussed
questions pretaining to each film
and then reported to the whole
group.
At the end of the second day,
Dr. D. Seiss, Psychology
Department, Western University,
gave an evaluation on the
seminar and made his own
comments on communication.
He said in recent years there
haS been much concern for
interpersonal communication.
He _felt the origin for this
concern stemmed in part from
the rapid changes in our political
order.
The public is now becoming
disenchanted with the lack of
clarity and honesty found in the
news media and in some political
leaders.
Politicians use fine sounding
terms in speaking of the arms
race as "mutual deterrents".
What they really mean is the
"mutual balance of terror and
we're frightened to hell of one
another.'
High sounding and impressive
names like Thor, Apollo and
Zeus are selected for nuclear
missiles, but one never heap a
missile being called Venus after
the goddess of love.
Politicians tend to go in for
image building. Rather than
discussing the important issues,
they try to make a president or
Prime Minister on the basis what
they believe the people will
accept.
Then too, the public is
constantly bombarded by
advertising that not only often
dishonest but disgusting. They
are beginning to react against all
this and are demanding
forthrightness.
Dr. Siess commented that the
upsurge in communication had
many good points but he warned
that there might be some
unfavorable aspects as well.
Many people tend to become
preoccupied with "why"
someone said something rather
than with "what" he said.
He also said that it doesn't
necessarily hold true that if you
get a person to really say what
he means that everything will be
alright.
The Registered Nurse
Association of Ontario which
was formed around 1900 is
closely connected with the
Canadian Association and with
the World-wide Association of
Nurses. It was formed to assist
nurses in fields in education,
health benefits and insurance.
However, it is also anxious to
give assistance on the personal
level or with financial problems
where needed.
Mrs. M. Wilson, director of
nursing at South Huron Hospital
was a member of the planning
committee with two other
nurses from the Huron Chapter.
This seminar was the first to
be sponsored by the Huron
Chapter and its success has
encouraged members to plan for
more such events in the future.
