At the one-third mark in the
season Lucan Irish have 11 out
of a possible 22 points. This is
made up of five wins, one tie,
and five losses. When you
consider that this is the first year
of operations this is a very
impressive record. Although,
there are a few veterans of
Junior D hockey on the team
the majority of the players are
rookies.
I would like to acknowledge
the fan support that the team is
receiving from the
Lucan-Ilderton/Granton area.
Attendance has increased for
each home game and this is very
gratifying to both the players
and the executive, who are
trying to make the games as
interesting as possible as a
spectator sport.
A bus now travels to all away
from home games and is
available for fans on a first
come, first served basis at a
nominal charge. Anyone wanting
to know the departure time
from Lucan Arena should
contact manager Jim ,Freernan at
the Lucan Hydro Office.
Wednesday of last week the
Irish skated to an 8-4 victory
over the Mitchell Hawks, The big
gun for Lucan was Captain Tom
Hodgins who scored four goals
and was named first star for his
efforts.
Other marksmen for the Irish
were Dave Revington, Dennis
Carty, Jim Hearn and Jeff Craig
with singles. The second star was
given to Steve English and third
star went to Bill Walkom of the
Mitchell Hawks.
The only injury was to Mike
Anderson who required stitches
to his head after a collision in
the second period.
Saturday night in Belmont it
was a different story as the
Sunsets handed the Irish a 12-9
loss dropping the locals to
fourth place in the league. Jerry
Freeman was forced to leave the
game after receiving a butt end

Figure
8
In this second column dealing
with the sport of figure skating
we will include part of a speech
given by a member of the local
club Launa Fuller at a public
speaking contest at the Exeter
Public School several years ago.
Figure skating consists of two
partsl One: free skating which
mostly consists of jumps, spins,
spirals and general movements,
which are usually preformed to
music.
Number two: school figures
which are based on he figure
eight. To learn to skate you
must have a great desire too,
You must be eager to go to
the rink early on winter
mornings when the air, which
has been still all night and is as
cold as the inside of an icebox,
stiffens your muscles and seems
to chill your bones.
You must like the quiet
concentrations of long practice
sessions on a gloomy, shadowy
rink, when no one speaks and
the only sound is the grind of a
skate, on a rough bit of surface
as someone pushes off, for
speed. One also must like staying
there all day, leaving the
tiredness behind but with the
feeling that you're lucky you
can go back and do it all again
next morning.
In the beginning of a free
skating session it is best to skate
around the rink in a figure eight
pattern covering the whole rink
like a hockey skater, going as
fast as you can, first in one
direction and then the other,
and keeping this up until you are
limber.
The speed will make you
quite winded at first but it is a
wonderful way to pick up your
condition. When you have done
this ranging about for a time you
might do some half circles
around the rink.
To do a figure eight you must
start from the center — the point
where your two circles are going
• to meet. Your back is toward
the circle you are going to make
