in Ausable loop
The standings in the Ausable
Valley Rec hockey tightened up
considerably with the
completion of last week's
schedule. Ailsa Craig on the
strength of a 9-2 trouncing over
Brinsley moved into undisputed
possession of first place with a
total of seven points.
Brinsley continues in second
spot with six points to their
credit and Shipka is close behind
with a five point total. In the
other action of the week, Lieury
gained their first two points of
the season by edging Shipka 2-1.
Charlie Eidy was in high
gear scoring five times to lead
the Ailsa Craig romp over
Brinsley. Don McAlpine checked
in with two goals while Gwyn
Griffiths and Brent Gillis each
scored a single goal.
Jim Conlin was the only
Brinsley marksman getting both
of his club's scores.
The Lieury 2-1 win over
Shipka was gained in a wide
open exciting contest. Don
Steeper and Claire Fraser were
the Lieury scorers while Tom
Russell registered the lone
Shipka counter.

BY CLARE STANLEY
The Lucan Irish Six took off
last week and demonstrated to
the fans that they could play
hockey and win. I noted in a
previous article that the Irish
players were unable to play
hockey away from home nor
could they control the puck for
the final ten minutes of play.
Last Wednesday before 465
fans the Irish beat Belmont
Sunsets by a score of eight to
five on home ice. Dennis Carty
scored three goals while Dennis
Burt and Mike Anderson scored
twice. Gord Hardy scored once.
The three stars for the night
were; Dennis Carty and Mike
Anderson both of the Irish and
Gary Cavey of the Sunsets.
On Friday night in Exeter the
Irish skated away from the
Exeter Hawks for a six to five
win. Manager Jim Freeman took
over the coaching chores and
proved to be a capable
replacement, in the absence of
Coach John Anderson. John
McLean proved that he could
play goal when called upon,
replacing Jerry Freeman in the
nets for this game.
Both teams are to be
commended for the manner in
which they played hockey, as
only five penalties were assessed
against each team. Goal scorers
for Lucan were Tom Hodgins (of
Ilderton) with two goals; and
Gord Hardy, Ken Needham, Jeff
Craig and Dennis Burt each
scoring singles. The winning goal
was scored by Dennis Burt.
Sunday, Lucan managed a tie
Another win
for novice
The Exeter novice hockey club
ran their undefeated streak to
five games in Shamrock minor
play in Lucan Saturday with a
5-2 win over Dorchester.
Paul Pooley scored twice to
lead the Exeter attack with
twin-brother Perry, Brian Horrell
and Brad Taylor scoring the
others in single fashion.
The Pooley boys each picked
up three points for their
afternoon's work as they assisted
each other.

with Zurich in Zurich. The final
score was two-two. The Zurich
fans proved that they have not
changed in fifteen years as they
ran amuck and the game was
held up for thirty minutes while
the police restored order.
The line of Andy Hardy,
Gord Hardy and Ken Needham
proved that they could skate and
pass as a unit. Goal scorers for
Lucan were Jeff Craig, and Mike
Anderson. For Zurich goals were
scored by John McKinley and
Bob Cook. Shots on goal were
Zurich — 35 and Lucan — 34.
Each team was assessed ten
penalties apiece.
Lucan has now won three,
tied one and lost one in their last
five outings It would seem that
Lucan has shown that they can
play with the best in the league.
Last night Mitchell travelled to
Lucan and I hope that you were
there.
