Hawk winning streak ends,
continue to hold top spot
A few weeks ago in this column we predicted
hockey fans in this district would be in for an exciting
winter of action and the first few weeks of the season
has proved us to be more than right.
The performances of the Exeter Hawks in the
OHA Junior `D' grouping has been more than satisfying.
Coach Bob White, a former senior player here with the
Mohawks back in the 1950's has the youngsters playing
an exciting brand of hockey.
With most of the boys on this year's roster
eligible to play at least another two years we should be
in for a lot of good puck chasing.
At the Centralia arena, the same picture is being
painted by the Lucan-Ilderton Jets. We were able to
catch the last period of the Jets game with Durham
Huskies a couple of weeks ago and it has been a long
time since we have had the privilege of watching such an
exciting twenty minutes of hockey.
The way the two clubs were hitting and also the
hard shots being fired goalward by many of the players
prompted our editor to remark, "It's a good thing we
retired when we did the way they are playing out there
tonight".
The only commodity missing so far this year by
most of the clubs is a good crowd of spectators. Anyone
looking for good hockey entertainment can do far worse
than spend a Tuesday night at the Huron Park arena
watching the Lucan-Ilderton Jets, a Wednesday night at
the Lucan arena for a home game of the Irish Six
juniors, Fridays at the Exeter arena for a Hawk contest,
Sunday afternoon in Zurich for a Dominion junior
contest or a Sunday night, also at Huron Park where the
Crediton Tigers play their home games.
At the moment the local Hawks head the Junior
`EY league by a full four points over the second place
Zurich Dominions while the Lucan Irish Six lower in the
standing appear to be ready for a winning streak.
While Bob White has the Exeter boys in high gear
and Doug O'Brien is getting good performances from his
young Dominions we are confident Jim Freeman and
John Anderson will work the Lucan boys into a pleasing
team before the season is over.
Howe He Does It
At least once a year we marvel at the spectacular
performances of one of Hockey's all time greatest stars.
The famous No. 9 of theDetroit Red Wings, Gordie Howe
breaks a record almost every time he steps out on the
ice for regular season or playoff action.
In his 24th season with the Red Wings this year,
Howe has a lot of targets in sight. He recently scored his
14th point giving him 1,700, his 18th goal in the
1969-70 season will raise his total to an even 750 and
his 46th assist will make him the first player .to hit
1,000.
In addition, at the beginning of this season,
Gordie needed to play 52 games to reach No. 1,600; 55
assists for 1,100 in combined season and playoff action,
58 points for 1,900 combined and 53 penalty minutes
for 1,600.
Howe already scored his 800th goal in combined
play with his third tally of the season, into an emptySt.
Louis net on October 19. Other Detroit players,°several
of them former Toronto Maple Leafs are getting well up
on the record list. Alex Delvecchio is on the verge of
passing both Ted Lindsay and Bernie Geoffrion to take
over fifth place on the all-time goal list.
The Wings' captain had 375 goals starting this
campaign and needed only five to pass Lindsay (379)
and 19 to overhaul Geoffrion (393).
Frank Mahovlich has gone well past the nine
points he needed to score 700 and 28 goals will shoot
him past Lindsay, too. Bob Baun needs 53 games this
year to reach 800.
Exciting Action
Anyone with an hour or two to spare Friday
afternoon or evening could do worse than take a trip up
to the South Huron District High School gymnasium to
see a top flight wrestling tournament.
High school grapplers from St. Jerome's of
Kitchener, Waterloo Collegiate, Listowel and the local
school will be competing in invitational play.
Preliminaries will get underway at three o'clock in
the afternoon with finals and consolations slated after
the supper hour. The general public and parents of the
local wrestlers in particular are urged to get out and
support the boys.
Where The Pads Come From
Ever wonder where hockey equipment is
manufactured? Well, we don't know the complete
answer but can fill in the necessary information as far as
goal tenders pads are concerned.
A 92-year-old former harness maker in Hamilton
makes the goalie pads for every goalkeeper in
professional hockey. Emil (Pop) Kenesky who operates
out of his ancient sporting goods store boasts that there
isn't a goalie playing anywhere in professional hockey
that isn't wearing pads made by him personally.
Top price for his hand made, hand sewn products
are $135 a pair and Pop Kenesky makes about 300 pairs
each year.

FOR ALIL GOOD SPORTS.
By Ross Haugh
The standings in the Ontario
Hockey Association district
Junior "D" league have
tightened up considerably with
all teams in contention,
The Exeter Hawks continue
to lead the loop with seven wins
in nine starts good for 14 points.
A real traffic jam exists for
second place with the Lucan
Irish, Zurich Dominions and
Belmont Sunsets each possessing
a total of nine points.
The Mitchell Hawks and
Lambeth Flyers bring up the
rear with eight and seven points,
respectively.
The Lucan club, in the last
place a week ago made a real
move by downing the Belmont
Sunsets 7-3 Wednesday and
edging the front running Exeter
club 6-5, Friday.
Sunday, Lucan and Zurich
played a 2-2 tie in Zurich in a
game that was delayed until
proper police protection was
provided.
LOSE IN THIRD
The Hawks, outplayed by the
Lucan youngsters in the first
two periods, came back strong in
the third period and were able to
tie the score with two quick
goals but were unable to hold on
as Tom Anderson got a
breakaway and fired the winning
Irish goal with only two minutes
left in the game.
The two clubs stuck strictly
to hockey and produced an
excellent brand of puck chasing
that will ensure good crowds
anytime they meet in the future.
The Irish moved into a 2-0
lead early in the first and were
' out in front 3-1 when the clubs
headed for the dressing rooms
for the first time.
Captain Tom Hodgins, a
member of the Hawks last year
opened the scoring for Jim
Freeman's Lucan club at the
9.55 mark on a play started by

be Pat Brabazon, former
chairman of Huron Park council.
A preliminary meeting was
held a few weeks ago at the
home of James Burr and
interested gunmen were present
from Lucan, Clandeboye and
Huron Park.
The Ontario Development
Corporation has given
permission to the proposed gun
club to use the rifle range
facilities located at the north
end of the Industrial Park.
Anyone interested in hand
guns, rifles or skeet shooting
from anywhere in the area are
invited to attend this
organizational meeting. If
enough interest is shown, an
executive will he chosen.
