The Lucan Irish Six managed
to lose two games in two days
last week, in 011A Junior 'D'
play,
The first to Mitchell in
Mitchell on Tuesday night, and
again at home to Exeter Hawks
on Wednesday night before the
largest crowd of the season. In
losing, the Irish learned that
hockey games are won on the
ice, and not in the penalty box.
In the first period against
Exeter Dave Revington scored
one for the Irish., and Barry
Baynham and Larry Laye scored
for the Hawks. Only four
penalties were called, two to
each team. The second period
saw the Irish score three goals
while the Hawks were kept off
the score sheet, Lucan goals
went to Tom Hodgins, Mike
Anderson and Dennis Burt.
In the second period the Irish
began to fill the penalty box
picking up 10 of the 16 penalties
called, and if it were not the
excellent goal-tending of Jerry
Freeman the Hawks could have
scored on numerous occasions.
In the third period Dennis
Burt scored the only two Irish

goals for his first hat-trick of the
season. Then the roof fell in as
Exeter proceeded to score five
goals and were assessed six
penalties while the Irish picked
up nine.
Two players who stood out
on the ice, as hockey players
who understood the basic
fundamentals of the game were
Dennis Burt, an aggressive
defenceman who picked very
few unnecessary penalties; and
John Anderson, a light, fast,
forward who can both
fore-check and back-check and
has not seen the penalty box so
far this season.
As one fan remarked after the
game, "I have been treated to
boarding, slashing,
cross-checking, tripping and
fighting." Maybe next game I
will see some clean, hard
body-checking by the defence,
and some fore-checking by the
forwards." By the time this
article is printed the Irish will
have played Lambeth and
hopefully this fan will have
gotten his wish.
Tomorrow night the Irish
travel to Lambeth, game time

Another tie
for darters
They're back at it again. For
the fourth time in five weeks the
Sharpshooters and Hairpins are
in a first place deadlock in the
Exeter Legion dart league.
The Hairpins came up with a

night to move back on even
terms with the Sharpshooters at
29 points, after spending a week
in second place.
The Cleaners are all alone in
third place with 25 points, the
Dart Sharks follow with 23
while the B & W's and
Shiphunters are tied for fifth
with 21 points apiece.
Dot Marks leads the ladies in
most games won with eight
while John Link and Jake
Lindenfield each have 12 wins to
their credit to head the male
competitors.
Last week's scores were as
follows:
Hairpins 5 - B & W's 0
Dart Sharks 4 - Turtles 1
Cleaners 4 - Featherflights 1
Dark Angels 3 - Sharpshooters 2
B & J's 3 - Dutchies 2
Doublers 3 - Scotties 2

Rec league play
should be close
If the first two games are any
indication of what is to come in
the rest of the season, the Exeter
and district Rec league should be
in for a good year,
In Thursday's opening action,
the Bank Boys edged Snell's
Shell 9-6 while Huron Park and
Newby Tire played to a 5.5 tie.
Dick Coulter scored four
times to head up the Bank Boys
scoring. Lloyd Moore and Alex
Leatherland each chipped in
with two goals while the
other marker was fired by Hal
Flaro.
Doug Ellison's three goal
performance was best for the
Shell club while single counters
were fired by Fred Wells, Scott
Burton and Hans Zeehuisen.
Bob Pinter lit the red light
three times and Frank Boyle
scored twice to account for the
Huron Park scoring. Jack Glover
and Doug McBride each notched
a pair of goals to spearhead the
Newby Tire scoring with Tom
Watt adding the odd goal.
