FOR A14. GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Another
success
In this column a few weeks ago, we mentioned
the graduates of the Exeter minor hockey program that
have moved up the ladder in junior play.
At that time we said Graham Hem had made the
Brandon. Wheat Kings in Western Canada Junior "A"
action, Jim Hayter was with the Stratford Junior B's
and Bill Fairbairn was with Petrolia, also a "B" team.
Since that time we have learned that Chris Riddell
is a valuable member of the Victoria Cougars of the
British Columbia Junior "A" hockey league.
Chris played squirt and pee wee hockey here in
Exeter for several years when his father, Lyall Riddell
was stationed at Centralia and Clinton air bases,
Lyall was also manager of the local clubs and was
a top notch five-pin bowler at the Exeter Bowling
Lanes.
Last year Chris played with the Sannich midgets
and received the "Player of the Year" award and won
the Island scoring championship.
After the first eight games this year, young
Riddell who celebrated his 17th birthday last Monday
has scored five goals and added two assists and is third
in team scoring. He plays centre and defence and is now
5 foot 9 inches and tips the scales at 162.
At the same time we failed to mention that Bill.
Bourne, a top notch performer with last year's junior
Hawks is now with the St. Thomas Barons of the
Western Ontario Junior "A" league,
Some Changes
A letter from George Wicke, WOAA
intermediate convener reports several changes in
make-up and scheduling of the groupings involving
district teams,
In the northern grouping Shelburne has dropped
out due to excessive travelling and lack of playing talent
and all games involving the northern club on the
schedule are to be disregarded.
The home games of the Monkton Wildcats will
now be played at the Mitchell arena instead of in
Monkton as originally listed.
Busy Curling Schedule
The Exeter curling club is again a busy spot with
the men's, ladies' and mixed leagues into full swing with
their first draws,
A lot of extra activity has been planned by
bonspiel chairman Glenn Fisher. The first of a number
of bonspiels will be held this Saturday, November 22
with a mens open starting at nine o'clock in the
morning.
Other open bonspiels for men will be the
Molson's Trophy draw on January 17 and the Exeter
Chicken bonspiel on February 14,
Mixed bonspiels are listed for January 31 and
March 7. The first one listed is sponsored by Canadian
Canners.
The entry fee for all bonspiels is $21 per rink
with inner included for all participants.
Congratulations, Panthers
The junior Panthers of South Huron District High
School deserve the heartiest congratulations from
everyone in this area on winning the Huron-Perth
Conference championship last week.
The local youngsters coached by Doug Ellison and
Jack Riddell racked up nine consecutive wins in
exhibition, regular season and playoff action. Five of
the wins were by the shut-out route.
The winning combination was one of offensive
and defensive strength. While the offence was running
up a total of 255 points, the defensive team was holding
the opposition to a total of 26 points, which is an
average of less than three points per game.
In a special assembly at the school, Tuesday
afternoon, the most valuable players on the team were
announced. As this was written Monday night we had a
special secret release from coach Doug Ellison in order
to list the winners here.
Randy Preszcator who scored the big share of the
Panther touchdowns this year was named the top
backfielder while the best lineman award went to Vince
Ayotte,
In the backfield Larry Bourne and Murray
Glanville were next in line with honourable mention
going to Dave Cyr, Pete Mason and Don Truemner. The
latter two are defensive backs:
On the defensive sides the two runners-up were
Don Jones and Mike Cook with honourable mention
going to Doug Mock, Gary Lavier and Dave Keating.
Clinic Coming Up
A sports clinic for the benefit of district public
school teachers will be held at South Huron District
High School on Saturday, November 29.
Teaching the fundamentals of basketball and
volleyball for both boys and girls and wrestling will
be the entire South Huron physical education staff
under the direction of Ron Bogart. Others participating
will be Doug Ellison, Glenn Mickle, John Wilkie, Miss
Lauretta Siegner, Miss Trudy Stover and Mrs. Andrea
Lee.

straight victories in Ontario
Hockey Association
Intermediate "B" play ran into
some trouble over the past
couple of days.
The Jets travelled to
Georgetown Sunday afternoon
and were defeated 7-4 by the
hometown Raiders. Tuesday
night on Centralia ice, the L-I
boys suffered a 4-3 loss to the
Durham Huskies in sudden-death
overtime.
In their next league action,
the Jets travel to Acton Friday
night and are back at Centralia
Tuesday to entertain the Fergus
Thistles.
FAIL TO CAPITALIZE
The Jets had a good edge in
territorial play against Durham
Tuesday night but were unable
to put the puck in he net when
it counted.
At the 2.25 mark of
su d den-death overtime, Dale
Rahn parker). by himself in front
of the L-I net tipped in a shot
from the blue-line by Len Long
to end the contest.
Both clubs scored one goal in
each period to end regulation
time with 3-3 deadlock. Murray
Stephens opened the scoring for
Durham at 6.07 of the opening
period and Jamie Robb
completed a three-way effort
with Doug Galloway and Jack
Nairn to even the score before
the teams headed for the first
rest period.
In the second session, Gerry
Herman put the Huskies in front
for' the second time with an
unassisted goal at the one
minute mark. Jacques Cousineau
replied at 3.14 on a similar solo
effort to complete the second
period tallying.
Cousineau scored his second
goal of the night at exactly the
same point in the third period to
give the Jets a one goal edge for
the first time.
With less than five minutes
remaining in regulation time,
Bob Heatherington put the puck
into the Lucan-Ilderton net to
set the stage for overtime.
Very few penalties were
called in the fast, but hard
hitting contest. Durham picked
up the only two penalties of the
first period, all minors.
In the second Jamie Robb of
the Jets and Heatherington of
the visitors squared off and were
assessed five minutes apiece.
The only third period hassle
saw Robb and Tim Campbell
banished with game misconducts
when they persisted in getting
into a fight a second time.
The Jets with a 3-1 lead at
Saturday night to take on the
Sunsets.
SCORING SHARED

by Bill Neil and Jack Nairn.
A little more than three
minutes later, Nairn put his club
out in front, whacking in a
rebound on a shot by Urbshott.
Dusty Aldis also gained an assist
on the play.
Early in the middle frame,
Nairn and Urbshott put Aldis
