Take an average couple,
minding their own business,
driving down Interstate 90 in.
Pennsylvania, add a Sheriff's car
and the couple might ask, "What
have we done?"
We're not exactly sure what
Mr, and Mrs, Charles Corbett
late of Lucan, Ontario, said
when Sheriff Andy Hanisek
pulled them off the Highway
Wednesday of last week, but
they must have heaved a sigh of
relief when they found out they
were invited to be the guests of
the Girard-Lake City and Erie
Exchange Clubs as part of the
groups' "boost Pennsylvania
Week" activities.
Included in the capturing
party were Howard Miller,
President of the Girard-Lake
City Exchange Club and Bob
Lyons of the Erie Exchange
Club.
The entertainment of the
captured couple was a
co-sponsored event of the two
Exchange Clubs.
Mr. and Mrs. Corbett lunched
at the University Club, toured
Erie County and in the evening
were treated to a banquet held
in their honour at Pietro's
Stagecoach Inn.
They were also provided with
over-night accommodations and
on the following day returned to
Canada with better thoughts on
the friendliness of
Pennsylvanians.
The visitors enjoyed the
banquet where Exchange club
members, their wives and guests
gathered for the festive occasion.
Howard Miller, President of
the Girard-Lake City Exchange
Club, presented the Corbett's
with a basket of fruit, donated
by Watt's Fruit Farm, Fairview,
a broiler-toaster and a book of
Pennsylvania's scenic sights.
Mr. Corbett who is President
of the Maple Syrup Producers
Association of Ontario,
explained that his wife and he
had attended a conference at
Chardon, Ohio, and were on
their way home. Although
anxious to get home, they were
kind enough to take the time to
be the guests of Pennsylvania for
the day.
When Mr. Corbett was asked to
say a few words at the banquet,
he said, "a funny thing
happened to me on the way to
the border today."
He assured the group, "We are
enjoying every minute of our
visit and gratefully appreciate
the hospitality." His wife
Elizabeth said, "I echo the
sentiments that Charles
expressed and will not soon
forget this trip."
