not made in situations where
people feel they should.
Take the recent visit to
Seaforth by a motorcycle gang.
There were those who
thought the entire gang should
be tossed into jail.
However, we must remember
the basis upon which the
policeman must act. He must
believe an offence has been
committed and that the person
arrested is the one who
committed the crime.
In the Seaforth situation, it
was not a gang war in which all
members were involved.
Apparently only three or four
were actually involved.
Motorcycle gangs, similar to
all other citizens, can only be
put into jail for committing
offences, and not merely on the
basis of the company they keep.
By the same token, we do
suggest that sentences handed out
to these people must be harsh to
act as a deterrent in a situation
which appears to be getting out
of hand.
