The bride-elect is the daughter of Mr, & Mrs. James Cunningham, Clandeboye, and Gordon is the son of Mrs. Earl Young, and the late Mr. Young of Lucan, Hostesses for the showers included Mrs. Arthur Cunningham, aunt of the bride-to-be, at her home; Mrs. Alan Hill and Mrs. Arnold Lewis, hostesses at a community shower for friends and neighbours at St. James Anglican Church; Mrs. Clare Hodgins, aunt of the bride-elect, a shower for relatives at her home; and Miss Lynda Young, cousin of the bride-elect at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Young. Lucan and district news OorreSpondQnt Airs, FrancesSaward Granton native dies in London Miss Mary Ann (Minnie) Rigney died in Victoria Hospital October 25 in her 89th year. She was formerly of Granton, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Rigney. She is survived by three nieces and two nephews. She rested at the C. Haskett and Son Funeral Home, Lucan, where funeral service was held by Rev. Susan Seymour of Granton. Interment was in Granton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Omar Burnett, Clayton Langford, Charlie Gowan, John Dunnell, William J. Rigney and Austin Hobbs. By J. E. BURT We had a very good turn-out for public skating Saturday night, and again Sunday afternoon. In Hockey the Lucan Irish 6 Jr. (D) Club ventured down to Norwich for an exhibition game, and won a very hard-fought game by a score of 6-4. "Tf.t - - Miss Reta Chown provided music at the organ. For a reception at the Lucan Arena and a dance which followed, the mother of the bride received the guests in a mint green crepe dress with matching lace coat and hat, a corsage of white and gold mums and gold accessories. The groom's mother wore Blue silver metallic dress, blue hat, silver accessories and a pink carnation corsage. For travelling the bride wore a two-piece teal blue suit, black accessories and a white mum corsage. They travelled to points east, Upon their return the young couple will reside in London. The material used in the bride's gown and the attendants' gowns was personally chosen and styled by the bride. She also styled her going away outfit and her mother's ensemble. AT CONVENTION Charles Corbett, President of the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers' Association, attended the association's Annual meeting which was held at Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg, As one of two delegates from Ontario to the National Maple Syrup Council in the United States, he attended their meeting in Burton, Ohio. Mrs. Corber accompanied her husband.. Two straight for Irish Six Lucan Irish Six made it two in a row by defeating Norwich 6-4 on Friday night. Jerry Freeman was in mid-season form in the Lucan nets turning aside sixteen shots in the first period. First period score was 5-0 for Lucan. Norwich scored twice in the second and third periods. Lucan added one goal in the final period. Dennis Burt and Dave Revington each scored twice for Lucan and Mike Anderson was the outstanding defenceman for the Irish. Chairman of the Irish Jim Freeman has now signed five midgets and 15 juniors to Lucan contracts and feels that two additional defencemen are required. He would like information from any area residents concerning the names of any possible prospects for defence. The Irish open at home against the Zurich Junior "D's" Wednesday, November 5 and coach Anderson hopes to improve his goals against average by that time. Their regular home games start here on Nov. 5 as they take on the Zurich Kings in their opening home game. Their first game is at Belmont this Saturday night. The Shamrock Novice league starts Sat., Nov. 1 with Lucan at Exeter at 7 p.m., the rest of the league opens here at the Centre with Dorchester meeting Lambeth at 2 p.m., South-East London vs. Huron E. at 3 p.m. and Stony vs. Ilderton at 4 p.m. The South Middlesex League open their schedule at Lambeth Arena Monday, Nov. 3 and play back here at the centre Thursday night. The Ilderton District Hockey League start here Monday and the Lucan Legion peewee, bantam and midgets have their first home night Nov. 7. Figure-skating lessons start Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. We are holding free skating for pre-school children every Wednesday afternoon 2-3 p.m. and for girls only every Friday from 4-5 p.m. Township man dies suddenly James Telford (Tes) Walls died suddenly October 20 at his late residence Lot 25, Con. 14, London Township, in his 76th year. He is survived by his wife, Clara Douglas; sons Douglas and John Walls, both of London Twp.; grandchildren Lori and Tammie; a brother Earl Walls and a sister, Mrs. A. E. (Irene) Menzies both of London. He rested at the C. Haskett and Son Funeral Home, Lucan, where the funeral service was held with the Rev. Malcolm A. Fife, of Ilderton in charge. Interment was in Littlewood Cemetery. A Masonic service was held in the Funeral Home under the auspices of Henderson Lodge No. 388, A.F. and A.M. Ilderton. Pallbearers were Peter Goudy, Jack Kennedy, George Thompson, Beecher Menzies, Ken Hardy and Bill Walls. Flowerbearers were Harold Walls, Clarence Stanley, Carl Leitch and Ross Holden. Couple honored at Clandeboye Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hodgins of Clandeboye were guests of honour on the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday, October 26 at the home of Mr. & Mrs. M. H. Hodgins. Guests included Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Ainslie and David of St. Marys, Mr. & Mrs. Emerson Hodgins and family of London, Mr. & Mrs. Murray Hodgson, Lucan, Mr. & Mrs. Ward Hodgins of Clinton, and the children of Mr, & Mrs. Arthur Hodgins, A congratulatory telephone call was received from Mr. & Mrs. 13. B. Hodgins of Owen Sound who could not be present. "You are now a member of an organization which is unique in that it is based on a common service and a common sacrifice. It has to offer comradeship only and asks of its members — service, not for self, but for those of our comrades or their dependents who are in need or in distress. It requires you to remember that, as you have served your country under arms, so you should serve in civilian life, ever zealous in any work which will make our Country and our Commonwealth more truly representative of the ideals for which our Comrades laid down their lives ..." Thus quoted Roy Warren, a Past District Commander of Dist. "A" who travelled to Lucan Sunday afternoon along with a host of Legion dignitaries to participate in the initiation of twelve new members of Br. 540 of the Royal Canadian Legion. To the skirl of the pipes and the roll of the drums, the new comrades were escorted before the crowd of Legionnaires and their families and friends which packed the Lucan Legion Hall. Bruce Fenwick, Emerson DeGraw, Scott McNair, Harold Smith, John McCafferty, Stan Walzack, Jim Windling, Lloyd Gibson, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Zinn were installed as ordinary members of the Branch. Jim Freeman and Gary Jones were presented honourary memberships in the Legion in recognition of the many hours they have devoted to Legion service work over the past years. Comrade Sid Daley, who instigated and planned this ceremony, chaired the meeting, and after the opening ceremonies, introduced the President of Branch 540, Jack Elson. Comrade Jack and Lucan Reeve Ivan Hearn welcomed all of the visiting Comrades and guests to Lucan. Reeve Hearn also mentioned the fine record of public service that the Legion has maintained Church news ANGLICAN A special Holy Communion Service was at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Lucan, last Sunday for the newly confirmed and the 1968 Confirmation class. Breakfast was provided and served by the Trinity Couples' Club in the Church basement after the service. There were 31 present. At the regular 11 a.m. service, Rev. R. A. Carson preached on Eschatology and the need for a second Reformation while there is still time. As examples of the degeneration of our society, he sighted the use of drugs, the increase in violence, the apparent indifference to sex murders and the failure of the School Boards to provide adequate Religious Education. UNITED The Sacrament of Baptism was observed at Lucan United Church for Timothy Albert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bates, at the regular morning service last Sunday. The first lesson was read by Donna Walker, and the second lesson by Douglas Barr. Rev. W. C. Tupling entitled his Sermon "Give us this day our daily bread". Plans are being made to organize groups for boys at the Church, Tyros for boys 9.11 and Sigma C for 12-14. Lucan personals Mr. & Mrs. George Stanley and family of Hanover were weekend guests of Mr. & Mrs. Wilbert Stanley, Mr. & Mrs. Allan Tindall, Wiarton, and Mrs. Duncan Tindall of Listowel were weekend guests of Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Abbott,• Mr, & Mrs, Ken Brock, Gloria and Milton of Thorndale were Sunday guests. Mrs. Katherine Fischer visited Mrs. Thomas Thompson for a few days last week. in Lucan and reminded the new members that henceforth they would not only be citizens of the village but would be recognized as members of the Royal Canadian Legion and entreated them to maintain the excellent reputation that the Lucan Legion has established. The Hon. Wm. A. Stewart, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, mentioned the spirit of unity which exists not only within the Legion but which seems to exist in any group or any project which is carried on by Lucanites. He said that it was obvious that the Legion must have established an excellent record locally in order to attract a fifty percent increase in membership since January of this year. R. E. (Bob) McKinley, M.P., spoke in glowing terms of the service work being carried on by the Legion in all parts of his riding. J. (Bing) Forbes, Dist. A. Commander from Windsor, headed the initiation team and was assisted by George Berdan, Immediate Past District A Commander from West Lorne, Charlie Moon, President of Chatham Branch; Larry Ross, District A Chairman from Wheatley; George Brown, Deputy Dist. Comm. from Chatham; Tom Healey, Zone A-5 Commander from Strathroy, and Roy Warren of Glencoe, another Past. Distr. Commander. The new Comrades were informed of the aims and objectives of The Legion and the meanings of the Legion insignias and regalia were explained. They were asked to re-affirm their allegiance to the country and Queen, and were presented with copies of the by-laws and their Legion lapel buttons. Following the initiation ceremonies, five Comrades who were charter members of Br. 540 were presented with 15 year service pins, indicating fifteen years of unbroken service with the Legion. They are Ralph Smith, Percy Vahey, Harry Bond, Robert (Jack) Holland and Dwight Ball, President Jack Elson then presented a cheque for $375 to Jim Freeman to get minor hockey teams under way this season. Pianist for the day was Mrs. Loretta Dickson and the bugler was Peter Overall of The Royal Canadian Regiment, a resident of Huron Park. Lucan United Church was decorated with baskets of feather fern, white gladioli, yellow, white, and bronze mums and cadelabra when Rev. W. C. Tupling united in marriage Miss Gloria Carmene Arenthals and Richard Wayne Maier at a double-ring wedding ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jack Arenthals of R.R. 1, Lucan and the groom is the son of Delbert Maier of Mt. Brydges and Mrs. Bernice Maier of London. Given in marriage by her father, the bride had chosen a floor length gown of crimped satin, with chantilly full-length sleeves and chapel-length train of chantilly lace which was attached to the sash of the gown. Her shoulder-length veil was held by a crown of pearls, she carried a white Bible with bronze and white mums and fern with streamers also tipped with bronze mums. Maid of honour was Miss Faye Maier, sister of the groom. Bridesmaids were Mary Van Geel and Sherry young, cousin of the bride, All wore floor-length gowns Of orange crimped satin, carried cascades of white mums and fern and wore bows in their hair to match their gownS. Best man was Gordon Pickham of Mt, Brydges, Ushers were Larry Greenlee of RR 1, Lucan and James Goldrick of Bothwell. .Lucan and Clandeboye 4-H held their second session of the "Focus on Fitness" course at Clandeboye United Church last Saturday, Each group was taken on a hike across the fields to Hodgins' Creek, and noted many items of interest, Returning to the Church basement they made notes on their findings and chose designs for their note-books. The Clandeboye girls decided to be known as the Clandeboye "Safety Swingers", while the Lucan girls chose to be known as the Lucan "Fitness Friends." Roll-call was answered by giving the name of "A book I would like to own." The majority of the girls chose an encyclopedia. Each member made comments on a book she had read and which she had brought to show others. Handwork was brought in to show progress and some difficulties were ironed-out. Roll-call for the next session will be "An interesting place I have visited", giving the highlights. MR. & MRS.
