high scoring contests, the senior

START EARLY
The senior Panthers wasted
little time in getting on the
scoreboard in Clinton, Thursday.
On the first play from
scrimmage, Barry Baynham took
a forward pass and went 80
yards for the first six-pointer of
the afternoon.
Late in the first quarter, Dave
Marshall scored his first of two
touchdowns on a one-yard carry
after gaining 20 yards on three
previous carries. Ron Corriveau
split the uprights with the
convert boot and the Panthers
were in front 13-0.
In the second period, the
Panthers scored three
touchdowns on short yardage
plays. Dave Marshall and Ron
Janke each scored from one yard
out and Tom Prout carried two
yards for his major score.
Janke kicked a single point
and Corriveau added another
convert to put South Huron in
front 33-0 at half-time.
Tom Prout intercepted a
Clinton pass in the third quarter
and came back six yards for a
touchdown. Early in the fourth,
Prout recovered a fumble on the
Clinton two-yard line and
carried in two plays later for his
third touchdown of the game.
Corriveau booted his third extra
point of the day.
On the fourth last play of the
game, the Panthers stalwart
lineman Dan Shoebottom
recovered another Clinton
fumble on the one-yard line.
Coach Ron Bogart quickly
switched Shoebottom to a
fullback position and the
Centralia youngster, playing his
last game for the local school
carried over for a touchdown to
complete the scoring for the
day.
The South Huron defensive
line had a tremendous day
forcing the Clinton boys to lose
46 yards on 25 attempts through
the line. The Clinton club gained
45 yards on South Huron
penalties giving them a net loss
of one yard on the day.

How your
Texaco home team
beats the
winter cold.
The 1969-70 season of the National Hockey
League isn't far enough advanced as yet to answer a
question that was posed before the schedule got
underway by fans and players, especially goal tenders.
The cinery was, "Will the new ban on curved
sticks restrict scoring this season."
The new NHL rule regarding curved sticks reads
as follows, "The curvature of the blade of the stick shall
be restricted in such a way that the distance of a
perpendicular line measured from a straight line drawn
between the heel and the end of the blade to the point
of maximum curvature shall not exceed one inch."
Last year it read one and a half inches. This
Would mean that Bobby Hull's banana blade will look a
little less like a shillelagh and presumably will have less
velocity ,and less changes in direction on shots, if and
when he returns to the Chicago line-up.
The goal tenders will probably be more relieved
than anyone with the change in the stick regulations.
They &have been complaining, "If Hull or Vic Hadfield,
the moserenown of the curved stick artists, don't even
know where they are shooting the puck, how are we
supposed to have a chance in stopping it?"
The knuckle ball situation in baseball is quite
similar to the curved stick. When Ralph Kiner was at his
best with the Pittsburgh he used to say about Hoyt
Wilhelm's knuckler, "The catcher can't even catch the
bloody thing, how am I supposed to hit it."
When the Chicago Black Hawks led by Hull and
Stan Mikita first introduced the curved blades in
1961-62, they were. looked upon as freaks.
With the scoring success of the Hawk stars, other
players started experimenting with it and in many cases
adopted the crazy looking curved stick.
Last season, a check of the NHL records showed
that of the first 25 point producers in the league, nine
were renowned users of the curved stick and a few
others were marginal cases.
They included NHL point champion Phil
Esposito, who set an all-time point record with 126
points, Hull who scored a record 58 goals and Stan
Mikita who scored 97 points.
Others successful with the banana blade were Ken
Hodge of Boston who came up with 90 points, Rod
Gilbert of the Rangers with 77 points and 30-goal scorer
Jim Pappin of the same Chicago club.
The only argument against the success of the
curved stick was the performance of Gordie Howe of
the Detroit Red Wings. Howe, who keeps rolling along
at the age of 41 finished third in the league standings
with 103 points, gained with a conventional hockey
stick.
The craze for curved sticks spread quickly to the
ranks of minor hockey with youngsters trying to
emulate the Hull's and Mikita's but not too many found
the .04„cess they hoped for.
We asked arena manager Alvin Willert about the
use of curved sticks by participants in the Exeter Minor
Hockey Association and were told "the use of the
curved stick dropped off a bit near the end of last
season."
Willert estimated only about one-quarter of the
local pee wee players used a curved stick while in older
boys the percentage could be as high as 50.
The local arena manager also said that there has
been a recent change in most of the sticks that are being
used. About two-thirds of the blade is straight with the
curve coming near the end.
On the pro scene, the new ruling is probably a
victory for the Toronto Maple Leafs and' Montreal
Canadiens. Both clubs had long campaigned against the
new sticks.
Toe Blake, when he was coach of the Canadiens
even had a rule against the curved sticks and traded a
couple of players because they insisted on using them.
. Jean Beliveau said he tried the curved stick for a
couple of exhibition games but couldn't get used to it.
Beliveau went on to say, "Maurice Richard scored 544
goals with a straight stick and let me tell you something
about that. If he had used a curved stick he would not
have scored half as many goals. He was a left hand shot
playing right wing and most of his goals were scored on
backhand shots."
Jacques Plante, co-winner of the Vezina trophy
last year had a pertinent observation about the new
ruling on curved sticks, "It has to help the goal tenders,
if only mentally. I don't really think that lowering the
pitching mound helped the hitters so much in baseball
this year, but look at the increases in hitting. It's a
mental thing. Now the goalie will feel that there is some
restriction of those awful sticks and the players will
have to get used to new sticks. I think this will help us
more than anything else."

Minor hockey will start this
Saturday and there are some
great changes over last year.
With the increase registration in
the novice class this year four
teams compared to the two we
had last year, more ice time is
needed.
So for the first few weeks on
a trial basis Pee Wee houseleague
will play on Saturday afternoon
from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. followed
by public skating from 3 p.m. to
5 p.m.
The novice games will be
played from 9 to 11 a.m. with
the squirts and mites taking to
the ice from 11 to 12 (no change
here). Bantam houseleague
although it will not start this
week is slated for the 8-9 a.m.
time.
To kick off this minor hockey
season at 9 a.m. we will put the
No. 1 novice team captained by
Brian Horrell against the No. 2
team whose captain is Perry
Pooley.
At 10 a.m. the No. 3 team
captained by Paul Pooley will
play the No. 4 team captained
by Laurie Skinner. Check the
player lists to find out which
team you are on. If your name is
missing call 235-2833.
Captains and players will pick
names for their teams on
Saturday but this week we will
use numbers.
Mites and Squirts as was
mentioned before play from 11
to 12 noon and here again if
your name is omitteed give the
arena a call or come on Saturday
and you will be placed on a
team.
The Pee Wee's take to the ice
at 1 o'clock and the first game
will be between the No. 1 team
and the No. 2 team. At 2 o'clock
the No. 3 team will take on the
No. 4 team. Look for your name
on the player lists.
On all teams, changes will be
made if necessary to make the
teams competitive and add
enjoyment to the games.
Registration will still be
excepted so if you missed
registering come to the arena
any Saturday morning and you
will be placed on a team.
Mothers and tots skating will
start this Thursday and continue
every Tuesday arid Thursday
from 3-4 p.m. with no
"admission" charge.
