A new mark for a yearling trotting gelding on a half-mile track was set at the London oval when Fireside Brandy, a handsome young trotter owned and driven by Leroy Revington, Lucan, covered the mile in two minutes and 22 and one-fifth seconds eclipsing 5 3/5 seconds off the old standard set in 1919 at Louisville, Kentucky. No one knows just how many other yearling trotters have attempted to better the long-standing mark but Fireside Brandy's effort was officially blessed by the Canadian Trotting Association, the governing body of harness racing in Canada. When Revington and Fireside Brandy pulled up after the mile they were given a rousing cheer by the crowd, obviously anxious to see a local horse make history. The track announcer George Moffatt announced the time for the trial and there were more cheers, louder than the last. Revington was naturally elated after the record breaking effort. "I had plenty of horse left at the finish and could have gone faster, but once I got him in stride at the start I was sure I would break the record with him," said Revington. "He's particularly intelligent for a young horse and does everything you ask of him." Miss Lina Abbott was among the residents of McCormick's Home who were taken to the Revival Service last Monday. So when you think about it, maybe what you need is a small station wagon all The Volkswagen Squareback Sedan is in a class by itself. it's sort of half way between a sedan :and a station wagon. It was designed for people who are sort of half way between a sedan and a 'station wagon. UNITED The Annual Thanksgiving Service was held at Lucan United Church last Sunday, the young people having decorated the Church. Rev. W. C. Tupling was in charge of the service but the Scripture readings were taken by by Wm. Cochrane and Jane Hodgson. Young people will be asked to perform this service every Sunday in future. Next Sunday the Church School will be held as usual but will close a few minutes early to give time for everyone to get to Clandeboye church for their anniversary service, Rev, A. M. Johnston from Richards Memorial Church, London will be guest speaker. Fold down the Volkswagen Square- back's rear seat and you've got 42 cubic feet of space iri the back. (Half the size of an average station wagon, but twice the size of an average sedan.) And because it's a Volkswagen, underneath all that cargo area is what makes the car go: an air-cooled engine. So up front, where most car makers put the engine, you can put another couple of suitcases. Also because it's a Volkswagen, it gets around 27 miles to a gallon of gas. And gets into tight parkinTspace easily. Lucan-Clandeboye Explorers held their regular meeting last Monday with 43 out of a possible 46 Explorers in attendance, and three counsellors. Mrs. Win. People who want room on the inside: not on the outside. of the time, instead of a big station wagon some of the time, Because the big problems with big station wagons are all the'bignesses that come with them. Like big gas bills. And big repair bills. And big insurance bills, And who needs that? People who like this idea but hate the way it looks. People who have better things to carry than car payments. They sometimes need a station wagon. But they don't need one badly enough to spend $4,000 on something so big it comes with its own echo.
