Lucan and district Lions held
their regular meeting last
Monday in the basement of Holy
Trinity Church with 90 percent
attendance (a record).
One guest, Lloyd Mardlin,
Granton, was present.
The guest speaker was Alf
Lister who works for the
Middlesex Board of Education at
Lucan Public School. He spoke
about his experience in the
British Army.
He was born in 1908 and
joined the British Army in
September 1941. He was on
convoy duty in the Far East and
was taken prisoner by the
Japanese when the British
surrendered Singapore in
February 1942.
He said that at the time of his
capture the attitude of 98
percent of the Japanese officers
was "we are the victors. You are
the vanquished." All prisoners
had to bow and say "Sir" or
they were severely punished.
Their first job was to clean up
a hospital which the Japanese
had bombed. There were three
floors and every one was filled
with dead bodies — doctors,
nurses and patients alike. To

The second job was to strip

bare.
Their third and biggest job
was to build a railroad 150 miles
long through the jungle,
submitting to tortures all the
time.
When their clothes had
rotted, as they had completely
in two years, they were given a
piece of cloth 4' wide by 10'

as the only protection against
the extreme heat of the sun.
Where there was a hill, they
had to carry the earth in baskets
to the lower places.
Mr. Lister saw a young lad
collapse who was kicked on the
head and killed. He forgot
himself and struck the Japanese
officer and was hit on the head
himself. When he came round he
had been tied to a tree and then
was whipped into
unconsciousness again.

The Walkathon for the Lucan
Irish Six Junior D Hockey team
was a huge success, thanks to all
those who put forth such an
effort.
The 54 walkers were given a
big send-off by the Hon. W. A.
Stewart at Exeter where they
had been taken by Murphy bus
driven by Len Smith.
John Moon and his son
Gordon were real go-getters, and
walked both ways. I should
imagine they were really tired.
Gerald Nordemann from
Nairn was the first to Lucan
Arena with a time of 1 hr. 40
mins. with Wayne Ropp and
Steve English not far behind.
J i m Freeman manager of
the team, brought up the rear
with Larry Hotson and Gary
McFalls.
There were walkers of all
ages, from 9 year-old Ricky
Freeman to Mrs. Kathlyn Egan,
who felt her age was best kept a
secret.
Bill Neil did his walking alone
in the morning because he had
to work in the afternoon. This is
what I would call real
enthusiasm for the team.
Mrs. Larry Hotson and Mrs.
Bob Taylor watched over the
walkers for any mishaps. Mrs.
Jim Burt and Mrs. Jim Freeman
checked each walker at the start
and again at the half-way
check-point, where they were
given refreshments.
Thanks to Harold Aitkins for
the use of his front lawn for this
purpose.
Jim Burt, the arena manager,
checked each one in when they
got to Lucan and signed their
papers to prove they had walked
the whole distance.
As there were too many
walkers for each to be
mentioned, the executive hopes
