GOOD SPORTS By Ross Haugh Tigers head north pony race meet We have been forced to write the lead to this sports column on two occasions due to the confusion surrounding the Ontario Baseball Association Intermediate "D" final involving the Dashwood Tigers and Mattice. The Tiligers held a meeting Saturday night and decided that if the final series was to be played, Mattice would have to travel south. Late Sunday night, Dashwood manager Glenn Webb in conversation with Joe Fillion of Mattice was told the northern club would not come to Dashwood under any circumstances. This meant another meeting of the Dashwood players. This was held Monday night and at that time most of the players agreed to make the trip north in an attempt to retain their provincial championship. As it stands at the moment, the Tigers will be leaving by bus early Friday morning for the 688 mile trip to Mattice and will play the first game Saturday afternoon. A second game is slated for Sunday afternoon and if a third is necessary it will go immediately after Sunday's first contest. The direction handed out by the OBA convenor in charge of the final series has been almost nil. Most of the arrangements to date were made by direct team-to-team negotiation. Mattice has offered the Dashwood club a guarantee of $200 and full lodging for players and team officials. In addition, the OBA has said they would contribute at least $150 to aid the Dashwood travelling expenses. The ironic part of the whole fiasco was the annoucement by the OBA that if the final was not played, Dashwood and Mattice would be declared co-champions of the "D" series. As Mattice is a direct entry to the playoffs, it would mean they would be part holders of the crown without playing one single game. How a team could become a champion without any playoff participation is beyond any comprehension. We hope the Dashwood club will be able to break a jinx that has followed them in away from home games during the past few years. They have been unable to win many playoff games on the road but are unbeatable at home. A large group of faithful Dashwood fans are planning to make the trip and this should help in providing the moral support they need to bring home the championship. As we are unable to make the long trip north with the team we would like to wish Glenn Webb and his Tigers the best of luck and feel they are quite capable of playing the brand of ball necessary to bring home the title. Golf Champion In order to cover up for a very drastic error on our part last week we would like to make an official report on a golf tournament that was held in the district a week ago. Our bearded editor friend who occupies the next office won the Lower Forty golf championship at the Ausable course the other Sunday. The main reason we didn't make an official report on the result last week was that we didn't know how it finished. We were told the morning before the event to be prepared to take the picture of the champion.but when the hours of the day in question wore on we heard nothing from the golf course and took it for granted he played his usual game and ended up in the discard. We also didn't have the nerve to ask the outcome as we were afraid this would bring on a rush of excuses of weather and wind conditions that hampered his game. Actually, the weather is one of the main reasons our editor won the tourney. A steady rain fell throughout most of the day and we know several of the better golfers in the group didn't feel like getting wet and felt a little generous and decided to let some of the lesser lights gain a little glory. Scout Does a Good Job Last week we reported that local high school football coach Ron Bogart was doing some scouting work for the McGill Redmen in the Senior Intercollegiate Football Union. Bogart's first assignment was a week ago when he covered the McMaster-Western game in London. His job at that time was to do a general report on McMaster and a full comprehensive detail of the Western offence and defence. In Montreal Saturday afternoon, McGill trounced the Mustangs 30-11 and coach Tom Mooney credited two pass interceptions to a good scouting report on the Mustangs from the previous week. Mooney, who was Bogart's coach in earlier days at Waterloo was quoted as saying, "We thought we had Western scouted well in certain aspects. We knew where we wanted to be on the interceptions." The South Huron physical educator was ,in Hamilton Saturday taking in the Varsity-McMaster game getting all the information on the Toronto team that plays McGill this Saturday, We met him in the halls of South Huron Monday morning when he was mailing his report to Montreal and we can say it was a well-filled envelope that was on its way, The reports usually reach Mooney and his coaching staff in Montreal Tuesday morning and are the basis for the type of offence and defence plays worked out for the next three days of practising. In addition, a Sunday night phone call relays any special tips that the scout may have picked up Saturday afternoon, The South Huron junior Panthers came up with two successive wins over the past week to run their unbeaten streak in Huron-Perth Conference play to three. The juniors under the guidance of coaches Doug Ellison and Jack Riddell outscored the Goderich Vikings 29-6 in Goderich Wednesday and blanked Stratford Central 41-0 in a home game played at Huron Park, Tuesday afternoon. At the same time, the senior Panthers were on the losing end again, for the second and third times. In Goderich Wednesday, the seniors lost 13-3 and Tuesday at Huron Park they were on the short end of a 17-12 score to Stratford Central. The senior club next sees action in an exhibition contest in Parkhill Tuesday afternoon against the North Middlesex District High School Marauders. On Thursday afternoon, October 16 both South Huron clubs are at home to St. Marys for a doubleheader. The games will again be played at Huron Park. A challenge match between CFB Clinton and members of the Ausable men's golf club officially closed out the regular season at the Ausable course, Sunday. The windup was actually the completion of the local club's yearly competition combined with the challenge games. The Ausable golfers downed the Clinton men by 94 strokes. Jim Russell gained the Custom Trailer trophy as the club champion and low gross winner in Sunday's "A" flight. Kirk Legros of Clinton took = MEN'S "A" LEAGUE (E. Matzold 734) (H. Rollings7n4) (J. Early in the first quarter the Panthers struck with a 55 yard pass from quarterback Murray Glanville to Larry Bourne that went all the way for a major score. Bourne booted the convert and the Panthers were out in front 7-0. The Panthers really got rolling in the second period and upped the score to 27-0 by the end of the first half. The touchdowns were scored by Murray Glanville, Larry Bourne and halfback Dave Cyr. Cyr crashed over from the one yard line after an exciting dipsy-doodle play moments earlier. Signal caller Glanville started a 73-yard gainer by pitching out to Randy Preszcator who in turn flipped back to Glanville who was able to find plenty of running room to set up a six-pointer. In the third frame, Preszcator took a 30-yard pass from home the Dobson Roofing award as low net champ in "A'. In the "B" section, Bob Nadin of Huron Park took the low gross title and Buzz Cunningham of Clinton had the best net score. The "C" flight titles went to Robbie Robinson of Clinton and Bill Coleman of Kippen. Jim Budd went over on 19 yard pass play and Murray Diagal went over from one yard out after the Panthers were called for pass interference. John Hall kicked a field goal and convert to complete the Stratford scoring and Barry Baynham added the final South Huron six points on a 66 yard pass and run sleeper play. Glanville for a touchdown and the South Huron quarterback passed to Peter Glover for a two point conversion. The final touchdown came in the fourth quarter when South Huron's defensive back Don Truemner charged through the Stratford line and blocked an attempted punt. Vince Ayotte scooped up the loose ball and went in for the score. Preszcator was the leading rusher with 50 yards to his credit while Cyr and Glanville collected 34 and 28 yards, respectively. COME BACK QUICKLY After falling behind 6-3 in the early stages of the first quarter, the Panthers bounced back quickly to take a 16-3 lead at half-time in Wednesday's contest in Goderich. Dave Carruthers scored a touchdown for Goderich after Larry Bourne had booted a field goal from 25 yards out for the Panthers. After the brief Goderich scoring, the Panthers took over and the outcome was never in doubt. Bourne took touchdown passes of 30 and 40 yards from quarterback Murray Glanville and added a convert to give his club a comfortable lead at half-time. Neither club was able to mount much of a scoring threat in the third quarter as both defensive lines played well. In the final 15 minutes of play, Randy Preszcator and Dave Cyr each scored a major for the Panthers and Bourne added one convert. Preszcator was again the leading rusher with 72 yards while Cyr picked up 47 yards. In post-game voting by the players Bourne and Don Truemner were selected as the best backfielders while Vince Ayotte was the top lineman. In their 17-12 loss to Stratford Central, Tuesday, the senior Panthers were first to hit the scoreboard.
