The second game of the best-of-five series is slated for the Dashwood athletic field tonight, Thursday at eight o'clock with the third back in Exeter Tuesday night, Grand Bend gained the final round by downing Exeter Legion 9.5 • in a thrilling 11-inning contest Thursday in the final game of a round-robin elimination series while Snell's were ousting Huron Park in the other series. ,FIFTH INNING RALLY A seven run outburst in the fifth inning provided the Grand Bend margin of victory in Tuesday's opening game of the finals. The summer resort nine opened the scoring with three markers in the second inning and were never headed. Snell's came up with their best scoring effort in the bottom of the sixth when they scored five times. In the second Stan Lovie doubled and came home on Harvey Vincent's homer to open the Grand Bend scoring and Paul Greenwood followed with a single and came around to score. Snell's put their first run on the scoreboard in the bottom of Each time the Huron Pony Trotting club presents it's twice monthly race meets, the times turned in by the ponies seem to improve considerably. At Sunday's regular races at Exeter Community Park a couple of ponies turned in times Junior footballers get .exhibition victory The latest decision by the Ontario Baseball Ass6ciation to uphold the protest of the Ivey Maple Leafs against the Dashwood Tigers leaves one wondering why baseball rules leave a lot of loop boles. An Ivey batter was called out in the second game of the series when he appeared as a pinch hitter without making the proper announcement to the plate umpire. After the pinch hitter singled to score a run to Put the visitors within one run of tying the score at the time, the Dashwood mangement appealed to the umpires that the proper batter didn't take his place at the plate and subsequently the out was called. One section of the rule book says a team must inform the ump ire-in-chief of all changes in the lineup and the umpire must in turn tell the opposing score keeper. About three sections later in the same book it states that a player is deemed to be officially in the game when he takes his place in the batter's box or his defensive position on the field, If this is the case, a lot of time and energy is wasted by making the necessary notifications, which apparently don't mean a thing. If substitution announcements are not necessary We can see a lot of mix-ups in batting orders, This is the second time this year, that an OBA committee has upheld a protest. On the other occasion, Tillsonburg won a protest against the Clinton Colts. In almost a similar situation a Tillsonburg batter was called out for taking his place in the batter's box without a batting helmet. The helmet rule is the same as making a replacement announcement. It says, you must do this, but does not list penalty for not abiding by the regulation. The latest moves by the OBA in upholding protests is quite a change in their usual procedures. We have been told in recent years, that the provincial baseball organization does not take kindly to protests, saying that games should be won and lost on the field and not in the committee rooms. We are not very happy with the OBA's decision on this rule but sort of expected it would turn out this way. If the announcement was not necessary, the batter who was being replaced should have been out on the batting out of turn rule, because as far as the Dashwood scorer was concerned there was no change and the proper batter did not appear at the plate. Dashwood won the disputed second game 5-4 to tie the series and then went on to take a decisive 16-1 victory in the third and deciding contest. The protested game will be replayed on the Dashwood diamond Saturday afternoon at 2:30 with the winner moving in to take on the Mattice Tigers in the provincial final on Thanksgiving weekend. Good Move We feel officials of the Exeter Hawks made the right move in deciding to enter the district 011A Junior "D" league for the coming season. In an expected grouping with Zurich, ',dean, Mitchell, Lambeth and Belmont, travelling for the Hawks will certainly be kept to a minimum and a close rivalry should develop between most of the clubs. The four members of last year's Exeter junior Hawks that had tryouts with "A" and "B" clubs certainly put up a good showing and several may stick with "B" clubs. Barry Baynham spent almost a week with the Toronto Marlboros while Bill Fairbairn is still with the Sarnia Junior "B" club at their training site at Petrolia. Jim Hayter spent last week with the Kitchener Rangers at Elmira and still has to decide whether he will accept offers from Stratford and Goderich for "B" play. Jim told us last week he turned down an offer to go, to Quebec. Scouts some from several junior clqbs in the province of Quebec were at the Kitchener camp ready to talk to boys that were cut. Incidentally, the coach of the Rangers this year is Gerry Forler who is well known in the district as the coach of the New Hamburg Hahns for quite a few years. Gerry should do a good job with the "A" club as he is a sound hockey man. the same inning on a couple of walks and Scott Burton's single. In the third frame, the first two Grand Bend hitters, Dick Coulter and Bill Bishop doubled but were each thrown out trying to gain an extra base. Successive singles by Stan Lovie, Paul Greenwood and Larry Lovie and a double from the bat of Harvey Vincent upped the Grand Bend run total to five in the third. Bob Blackburn doubled and scored on Burton's second single of the night in the fourth for the second run for the Shell club. Three bases on balls, back-to-back triples by Dick Coulter and Bill Bishop and singles delivered by Paul Greenwood and Barry Clark were mainly responsible for the seven run Grand Bend rally in the fifth. Grand Bend tallied once in the sixth on Clark's single and finalized their scoring in the seventh on Stan Lovie's round tripper. In the bottom of the fifth Bob Blackburn notched his second double of the night to start a big rally for Snell's. Scott Burton singled for the third consecutive time to score Blackburn. Barry Baynham followed with a walk and scored along with Burton on Larry Willert's double. Bill Farquhar drew a walk and followed Willert across the plate on Bill Bourne's long of less than two minutes. STRIKE EARLY The Panthers struck early as quarterback Murray Glanville passed to Larry Bourne for 25 yards and a major score. Bourne split the uprights with his kick for the extra point, The ensuing kick-off carried deep into the St. Marys end zone for a single point to up the score to 8-0. drive to the outfield. Bourne was called out for failing to touch second base to quelch the rally. Don Courtney went the distance to gain the pitching win for Grand Bend while Jack Fuller absorbed the loss for Snell's. HOMER DOES IT A home run from the bat of catcher Harvey Vincent completed a four run rally in the top of the eleventh inning to give Grand Bend a 9-5 win over the Legion Thursday to gain the league final. All but three runs were scored in the first and last innings of the deciding contest. Grand Bend scored four times in the top of the first and the Legion bounced back in their half with a trio of runs. A walk, singled by Bill Bishop and Ron Crown and a double from the bat of Dick Coulter sent the first Grand Bend runs across the plate. A hit batsman, a fielder's choice and singles by Gerry Finnen and Ron Bogart were responsible for the opening Legion run scoring. Grand Bend added a fifth run in the third on Stan Lovie's double and singles by Harvey Vincent and Larry Lovie. The Legion narrowed the deficit to a single run in the sixth on Ron Bogart's_lead-off home run and forced extra inning play when Terry Wade walked in the seventh and came around to score on an error. In the top of the eleventh, a double by Lorne Vincent and singles by Coulter and Bishop preceded Harvey Vincent's home run to assure the Grand Bend victory. Dick Coulter notched three hits to lead the Grand Bend batters while Ron Bogart was best for the Legion with two singles in addition to his home run. Lorne Vincent was the winning hurler for the Grand Bend club while Terry Wade was the loser. Local teacher wins tourney The secondary teachers' division of the annual Teachers Golf tournament held at Mitchell Saturday was won by a member of the staff of South Huron District High School. Doug Ellison, a physical education teacher and coach of the junior football club finished with a score of 79 to take his division title. The over-all champion was Glenn Keene, a public school teacher from Toronto with an 18-hole score of 77. Ellison, who lived in Mitchell for quite a few years took kindly to his home course and came in with a fine 38 on the final nine to cinch the secondary championship. Others from South Huron taking part in the tournament Were principal J, L. Wooden, Morley Sanders, Joseph Fulop, Sherwood Eddy and John Wilkie. ,ittri sorry to let -you gitp—bitt buameaa is business, Dad:" The only scoring play of the second quarter was Bruce Andrew'i punt that went for a single to put the St. Marys club on the scoreboard. A second Glanville to Bourne touchdown pass was nullified when the Panthers were called on a penalty. The Panthers struck quickly again in the second half when signal caller Glanville zig-zagged his way for 25 yards through the entire St. Marys defensive team to chalk up six points. Bourne added the convert. The St. Marys fans got their first chance to cheer a few minutes later as John Gettenburg rambled for a 65-yard touchdown. The convert attempt failed, Early in the fourth quarter, Vince Ayotte charged through the St. Marys line to block an attempted punt and Don Jones pounced on the ball in the end zone for a South Huron major. To round out the scoring, Bourne kicked a field goal late in the game. Murray Glanville and Don Jones were chosen the best offensive and defensive players, respectively by their team mates in a post-game vote. Dave Cyr led the Panther ground attack with 85 yards while Randy Preszcator picked up 65 yards along the ground and Glanville carried for 50 yards. Glanville hit Perry Stover on three pass plays. The South Huron defensive line was tough, limiting St. Marys to 142 yards on the ground and Ray Lobb of the Panthers made a one pass interception.
