Rec Hunting. rules The seini-final. series in the gxetpr and district Rep softball league is down to one .gione and it is the most important of the season, The Exeter Legion and Grand Bend were rained ,out Tuesday night and will try again tonight, Thursday. In the round robin 'set Grand Bend and the Kinsmen have two wins each while the Legion has one victory. A win for Grand Bend in tonight's game would send them into the 'finals against .Spell's Shell, but a Legion victory would leave the three clubs deadlock. While at Western Fair in London Friday night for a few hours we paid a visit to the Ontario. building and the Department of Lands and Forests exhibits in particular, They had many species of live fish and animals on display and many circulars and pamphlets on hunting and fishing in addition to the summary of regulations of both sports. One interesting item in the hunting regulation circular tells about a small area in the province in which hunting for Canada Geese will not be allowed, Geese may not be hunted in the Counties of Wellington and Waterloo, the Townships of NormaribY, grernorit, and Proton in Grey County, the Township of East Luther in Dufferin County and South Dumfries Township in Brant County. This closed season on geese is part of a program designed to establish breeding flocks of giant Canada geese in southern Ontario. The closure to goose hunting will be in effect for several years, but is not permanent, Most of the Canada geese which pass through -Ontario nest on the lowlands of James and Hudson Bay. The Giant Canada Goose, a remarkably large race. (14 to 18 lb. individuals are not uncommon) is the only subspecies which will breed successfully in southern Ontario, For instance, the rapidly growing flock of these big geese situated on Lake St. Lawrence originated from releases made in 1959. The Department in association with the Ontario Waterfowl Research Foundation, is rearing giant Canadas and will be releasing large numbers of geese in the area closed to hunting during the next several years. Mature, breeding geese will be released on both public and private lands; these geese and their progeny are expected to migrate and then return to the general area of release to nest. Already there are several small breeding flocks in the closed area. Given protection, these and the released birds should increase rapidly, The local breeding flocks will serve a second very useful purpose in attracting and holding northern-breeding Canadas, which now rarely stop over in southern Ontario. Very few geese now are shot in the area closed to hunting. This situation will be remedied if the goose program is successful. In future years the release program will be extended to other areas of southern Ontario. Since supplies of geese are limited at present, most releases will be made in the primary release area. For further information on this program, write to the Chief, Fish and Wildlife Branch, Queens Park, Toronto 182. the third. At this point with the score at .13-6, Grand Bend hurler Lorne Vincent settled down and forced the next two Kinsmen batters to ground out, Vincent allowed seven hits over the seven inning route while Don Bell on the Kinsmen hill gave up six safeties. In Dashwood Thursday night Grand Bend scored seven times in the early innings and then held off a last inning Kinsmen threat to gain an 13.6 win. The Kinsmen scored twice in the top of the second to take very short-lived lead. Singles by Jim Newby, Bob Callingham .and Bryan Hogg produced the opening runs. Grand Bend bounced right back in their half of the same inning to score few times, A couple of errors, a walk and singles from the bats of Lorne Vincent and Harvey Vincent sparked the Grand Bend rally. . A single by Bill Bishop and back,to-back home runs by Stan Louie and Ron Crown sent the Grand Bend run total to seven in USBORNE BOYS SOFTBALL CHAMPS — Sunday afternoon on the Exeter diamond Whalen downed Thames Road 22-15 in the third and deciding game to win the Usborne Township softball championship. T-A photo SENIOR September 25 — Seaforth at South Huron Tigers oust Ivey in OBA, wait for protest decision The Dashwood Tigers came up with one of their biggest batting splurges of the season Sunday afternoon to trounce the Ivey Maple Leafs 16-1 in the third and deciding game of their Ontario Association Intermediate "D" baseball semi-final series. After . dropping the opening game of the series in Ivey a week earlier, the Tigers came back with a 5-4 decision Saturday night to force the deciding contest the following day. The Tigers seem to be in the provincial finals, but an Ivey protest of the Dashwood win Saturday night may keep the final outcome in the balance for almost a week. Dashwood manager Glenn Webb told the T-A he had been informed late Tuesday evening that the Ivey club were going ahead with the protest and it is expected an OBA committee would rule on the protest later this week. With two out in the top of the seventh and an Ivey runner on second base and Dashwood leading 5-3, the Ivey club inserted a pinch hitter who promptly singled in what would have been the fourth run of the night for the visitors. The batter was called out after he reached first base by umpires Murray Butcher and Bill Murphy of Mitchell for failing to report the change in the batting order. If the Ivey protest is disallowed the Dashwood club will play host to Mattice in the provincial final on Thanksgiving weekend. But an upholding of the protest would mean the second game would be replayed on the Dashwood diamond. Snowmobiling is the game ...
