STEP RIGHT UP,
FOLKS!
It's Exeter Fall Fair time again, although one of the
big changes in this year's program is the fact that the dates
of the local event have been changed. It will be held this
Friday and Saturday, the first time the local Agricultural
Society directors have staged a weekend fair.
They're hoping for the same success that
accompanied a similar change at Bayfield. Last weekend,
the attendance at the Lake Huron village jumped over 500
people from the average enjoyed when it was held on a
Wednesday and Thursday.
The Exeter change has already paid dividends in
another way, The directors have had difficulty in the past
obtaining the services of bands due to the fact most
members were working. However, three will be on hand for
the Saturday noon parade through downtown Exeter and
this should make the walk to the park one of the most
entertaining in years.
Things get underway Friday night, when Huron
Warden Jim Hayter will do the official honor of opening
the fair.
This will be followed by the always popular baby
show and secretary Garnet Hicks indicates there could be a
record number of entries.
There will be three divisions and mothers who wish'to
enter should contact Mr. Hicks as soon as possible as the
entries will be closed off Friday at noon or when the classes
are filled to capacity. Friday morning entrants call
235-2833.
While the baby show always draws the admiring
glances from the female set, the male members of the
audience won't be overlooked .either as another beauty
contest is planned.
This event was first 'staged-1;i ff66"and has been a
tremendous success each year since and chairman Carf Cann
indicates that with the girls he has already had sign up, this
year will be different. Winner of the event will walk away
with a Bulova watch donated by local jeweller, Earl
Campbell. Each contestant will receive a prize.
Another queen to be crowned is the fair's baking
champion. This is always a highly sought after title among
the area cooks and needless to say the judges have a tough
assignment when.they come to sample the wares entered in
the various classes.
Special entertainment Friday evening will include tap
dancing by Michelle Robinson, Wood ham, and Arden
Bryan, Granton. They will be joined by the young
musicians of the local Academy of Music, many of whom
have made quite a name for themselves in various festivals
around the province.
Several of the young musicians made their public
debut playing on the street during Exeter's annual Fun Day
and they were much enjoyed by those who visited town
that day.
The indoor exhibits at the fair will also be on display
Friday night, as well as the usual lineup of booths showing
the merchandise of local merchants right through to the
popular candy booth of the Exeter Home and School
Association.
Saturday's parade gets underway at 12:00 noon, with
the bands and floats heading out from Snell Bros. Ltd.
garage and the decorated tricycles and bicycles falling in at
Cann's Milt
The bands will include the Exeter Legion Pipe Band,
the North Easthope Scottish Pipe Band and the Zurich
Centennial Brass Band. The majorettes from Zurich will
also be strutting high in the parade.
Huron MP Robert McKinley, the Hon. C. S.
MacNaughton, Exeter Mayor Jack Delbridge and other
dignitaries will speak at the program planned in front of the
grandstand.
By popular request, Earl and Martha Heywood are
returning for their second consecutive appearance at the
fair. A native of Usborne, Earl and his wife have performed
for several years on CKNX TV and they have also made
several recordings. The popular duo perform magic tricks,
much to the' delight of youngsters attending the fair.
A new attraction this year will be the pony and
chariot races. The chariots raced at the recent rodeo and
thrilled the large audience with their fast, exciting romp
around the track, In that event, two drivers were tossed out
of their chariots.
The highly rated horse show will be conducted
primarily in the rodeo ring, making it possible for
spectators to sit on the grandstand to watch the
proceedings, while the youngsters will be off romping
through the midway.
