Expect high runs of hogs If the latest Canada Department of Agriculture hog forecast proves accurate, then hog runs late this year should be higher than a year ago. However, for the current quarter (July-September) weekly marketings are expected to average 138.800 head, a decline of 34r from marketings of the corresponding 1968 quarter. Eastern marketings are expected to be down 2c7- and western output down 4%. Manitoba runs are expected to be 6% above a year ago. In the first six weeks of the present quarter, weekly runs averaged 127,580 head. Marketings during the fourth quarter this year are expected to run 4% above the 1968 level with the increase general in both East and West. All provinces, except Alberta and British Columbia, are expected to show increased marketings compared to a year earlier. The largest percentage increases, about 10-11%, are forecast for Manitoba and Saskatchewan. For the six months January through June of next year, a 10% increase in marketings compared to a year earlier is expected bringing average weekly marketings to 159,800 head. Eastern output for the first half of 1969 is forecast to run 9% higher with Western runs 12% above year earlier levels. POPULAR PORK Through the ages, pork has been the meat most often eaten on special occasions. In England, no feast was complete without its roast suckling pig, while in China, enormous hogs were decorated and carried in religious processions, then eaten at the family feasts which followed.
