FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By ,Ross Haugh
Back
to work
The first day back to work after a week's holidays
is probably the toughest in the entire year. After seven
days of liesure it is a bit of a problem to get back into
the swim of things.
Our week was certainly one of liesure as we spent
most of the time visiting relatives at the Canadian
Forces Base at Foymount. This is a small radar station
located near Pembroke and is built on a hill. We were
told Foymount is the highest town in Ontario as far as
altitude is concerned.
We were amazed to find terrific baseball interest
in the area not only at the Forces Base but the
surrounding area. A community known as Cormac with
a village population of about seven or eight people has
five ball clubs on the go. All we saw there was a general
store and a couple of houses.
There are two minor baseball teams, a girls
softball team and a men's baseball and baseball and
softball team in intermediate ranks.
After being talked into umpiring 'a pee wee ball
game between Foymount and Cormac we had so many
aches and pains we were content with spending the rest
of the time watching television.
It had to be getting down so low behind the plate
for the little fellows and the high altitude that caused
most of our problems.
Actually, we cut our holidays a little short by
being back in time for Friday's official opening at
Dashwood of the newly installed floodlights at the
athletic field there.
It meant leaving the Ottawa area fairly early
Friday morning but it was a good night with the
enthusiastic supporters of baseball in the police village
of Dashwood.
The lighting system is one of the most modern in
Western Ontario and will provide many hours of
enjoyable sport for the fans of Dashwood.
The appearance of the Canadian junior champs
from Sarnia certainly added plenty to the official
opening. The Sarnia club only the weekend before had
retained their Canadian title by besting the best clubs
from nine other provinces.
Steve Stefanko, who is the director of all minor
baseball in the city of Sarnia told us more than 45,000
fans watched the four day tourney. The Sarnia
Drawbridge Inn juniors have only lost two games to date
' during the Intercounty schedule and stand a good
chance to add the OBA championship to their long list
of conquests.
One member of the Sarnia junior club, pitcher
Mark Fisher has signed a bonus contract with the
Detroit Tigers. Stefanko said the size of the bonus has
not been revealed.
The game Friday night was a good one for the
first five innings with the Dashwood club holding a 2-0
lead, but they went astray and committed no less than.
seven errors in the top of the sixth inning to give the
Sarnia club a 7-2 lead which they never relinquished,
going on to win 13-3.
Nearly every big league had a scout in attendance
at the Sarnia tournament. The St. Louis Cardinals were
represented by Eddie Gillis of New Brunswick.
Eddie is presently on the staff of the hockey and
sports training camp at Centralia and is doing a
tremendous job in teaching the youngsters the basic
fundamentals of the game of baseball.
Colts Win Title
The first year back in the Huron-Perth baseball
league has been rewarding for the Clinton Colts.
The Clinton club which was out of action for
quite a few years won the H-P league title in their first
try. They downed the Thorndale Angels 15-11 Sunday
afternoon in Clinton to clinch the championship.
This is the first time in recent years that a
Huron-Perth champion has been decided before the
teams move into their respective OBA playoffs.
The Dashwood Tigers and Zurich Lumber Kings
are starting a best-of-seven series this week to determine
a "D" winner while Mitchell and Thorndale will be
battling in a similar series in the "C" category.
The new league champs from Clinton will be
meeting St. Marys in another best-of-seven series to
provide a."B" club in the provincial playdowns.
Rodeo Parade This Year
Officials of the Midwestern Rodeo have included
a parade in their list of festivities for the first time this
year. The two-day affair scheduled for the Saturday and
Sunday of the Labour Day weekend is again expected to
draw the top rodeo contestants of North America.
Fred Darling is in charge of the parade and has
asked us to pass along word that anyone wishing to
participate in the parade will be more than welcome.
The only requirement is that entries be of a rodeo
or western horseman flavour.
The parade will take off from the parking lot of
Larry Snider Motors at 12 o'clock noon on Saturday,
August 30.
