GOOD SPORTS By Ross Haugh A wise decision Officials of the Huron-Perth baseball league made an important and very wise decision at a meeting held in Hensall last week to discuss playoff plans for one of the oldest intermediate loops in the province of Ontario. All teams agreed unanimously that a Huron-Perth champion should be declared before any of the clubs advance into Ontario Baseball Association playdowns. In many of the recent seasons a few games would be played for the loop title, sometimes only in the semi-final stage when the clubs were ordered to participate in provincial playoffs. Last year the Dashwood Tigers and St. Marys were able to reach the Huron-Perth finals but before they were able to play any games, they were ordered into OBA play early in September. When they finally got around to decide a winner it was on Sunday, October 20 and the weather was hardly conductive for good baseball, In the meantime, the Dashwood club had eliminated the Walsingham Senators on September 15 and were sidelined until October 12 and 13 before the final against the Mattice Tigers was staged. This year a best-two-of-three series will be played in each of the semi-final and finals for the league title with the top four teams making the playoffs. At the moment it looks like Mitchell, Thorndale and Dashwood are in the league playoffs with Clinton, St. Marys and Zurich battling for the fourth spot. After the league title has been decided, the teams in each category will then do battle for the right to move out into provincial play. In the "D" division, Dashwood, Zurich and Hensall will meet in a home and home round robin set. For "C" honors, Mitchell and Thorndale will tangle while St. Marys and Clinton will meet for the right to advance in the "B" playdowns. Big Tourney On Tap The softball diamond at Exeter Community Park will be a busy spot on Civic Holiday, Monday, August 4. Through the efforts of Bob Baynham and Ed Hearn of town, eight of the better fastball teams in Western Ontario will be in to participate in an all-day tournament. At the moment seven teams have already filed entry and the eighth acceptance is expected momentarily. Already entered are clubs from Shedden, Goderich, Bridgeport, Strathroy, McDonald Electric and Sturdy Towing, both of London along with an all star team from Exeter. The team winning the championship will receive $100 with the runner-up club being awarded $50 and $25 will go as a consolation prize for the third place team. The entry fee is $25 per team and each club must forward a list of 15 eligible players. The Exeter club participating in the tournament will boast a formidable pitching staff. Joining local hurlers Don Bell, Gord Slaght and Terry Wade will be Don Pickering, a native of Shipka now pitching regularly in a London City league. Skating Every Sunday Anyone wishing to enjoy a different recreation on a warm Sunday afternoon could do worse than pay a visit to the Huron Park arena. The recreation council at the Park has rented the ice surface at the Randall arena for the next few Sundays from the National sports training and hockey camp and is staging open skating. For a nominal fee of 35 cents for all ages, two hours of public skating can be enjoyed. Also, if any district hockey teams are anxious to get in a little early practices or a bunch of fellows want a game of shinny, ice time is available at $20 per hour. Anyone wishing to book ice time at the Huron Park arena should call Paul Roach of the hockey school at 228-6832. This is certainly a reasonable rate for summer ice. We were at the arena Sunday afternoon to get a few pictures of the open skating session and when we were leaving were approached by a couple of Exeter youngsters wanting a ride back to town after skating. They said they didn't want to hitch hike because people might think they were a little odd trying to get a ride carrying a pair of skates in the middle of summer. Helper At Hockey School During last week's story on the activities of the National sport and hockey training camp at Centralia, we failed to mention one man that is doing a lot to help the school on a non-paying basis. He is Ron Peterson, a pilot with Air Canada who is taking a month's holidays to help Paul Roach in the operation of the school. In the seventh, Barry Clarke delivered a single and moved to third on Bud Desjardine's double and both runners came home on Ron Crown's two-bagger. Lorne Vincent was the winning pitcher for Grand Bend, allowing only three hits while Don Appleby went the distance for Huron Park and was almost as stingy giving up five base hits to the winners. HOME RUNS HELP Three home runs in different innings were enough to give Snell's Shell a 9-7 win over the Kinsmen, Monday. Scott Burton smashed a round tripper in the opening inning with Bill Farquhar aboard For the second time in recent weeks, the top winners in an open lawn bowling tournament at the local greens were from out of town. Wednesday afternoon a mixed pairs event was held and despite temperatures in the 90's a total of 24 contestants enjoyed the afternoon of tournament play. The problem came about when three teams tied for second place with identical season point totals of 14. The Mitchell BP's finished well out in front of the pack with 20 points while the Dashwood Tigers, Thorndale and Clinton Colts each ended up with 14 points. The Dashwood club came on strong in the late stages of the season to ensure a playoff spot. They downed the winless Hensall club 7-2 Wednesday and blanked Thorndale 6-0 in Dashwood, Sunday. At the parade we had about 90 children riding a float donated by Larry Snider Motors and the Fire Department donated the old fire truck. The children were dressed in pirate, gypsy and hobo costumes with some miscellaneous costumes as well. This week we are having a three day camp-out. All children 9 and over that belong to playground are invited. We hope this goes over well so we can try various other things. Next Wednesday we are taking the children 8 and under to Storybook Gardens at London. 1969 DEMONSTRATOR SALE 1969 IMPALA 4 DOOR SEDAN Automatic, power steering and brakes, radio, whitewalls, license, H37674 1969 CHEVROLET BEL AIR SEDAN Automatic, power steering and brakes, radio, whitewalls, license H75209 OK USED CARS 1968 CHEVELLE MALIBU HARDTOP Automatic, radio, vinyl roof, Balance of 50000 mile 5 year warranty! license K181 14 1967 CHEVROLET BEL AIR 8 CYLINDER SEDAN Automatic, radio, whitewall tires, Balance of 50000 mile 5 year warranty! license H77658 1966 PONTIAC PA,+RISIENNE 2 DOOR HARDTOP Power steering and brakes, radio, whitewalls, license H79011 1966 CHEVROLET IMPALA 4 DOOR HARDTOP Power steering and brakes, radio, whitewalls, license H39306 1966 PONTIAC LAURENTIAN 8 CYLINDER SEDAN Automatic, radio, shadelite windshield, license H39444 1966 CHEVROLET BEL AIR SEDAN Automatic, radio, license H78116 1965 PONTIAC LAURENTIAN SEDAN Automatic, radio, whitewalls, license H76233 1965 CHEVROLET BEL AIR STATION WAGON 8 Cylinder, automatic, radio, whitewalls, license X3596 1964 FALCON CONVERTIBLE 8 cylinder, automatic, power steering, license 290072 USED TRUCKS 1968 CHEVROLET% TON FLEETSIDE PICK-UP License C92145 SNELL BROS.
