DEMISE OF TWO ELMS
We report this week the
demise of two stately elms that
stood as sentinels near the road
on the farm where your
correspondent lives on the 3rd
Concession of Biddulph
Township,
These two large trees had
fallen victim to the Dutch Elm
disease that has taken so many
of these beautiful trees.
It was necessary to have them
removed, so Messrs. Donald
Abbott and Lorne Hodgins,
Lucan, were engaged to cut
them down. The rings of growth
on the stump of the largest tree
count 100, denoting the age of
the tree.
These trees, therefore, would
be quite well away, when the
present occupants' grandfather
and great-grandfather, the late
Richard Elston bought the farm
from Thomas Alloway in 1881.
If trees could talk, these
could tell one interesting story
of what has transpired during
their 100 years, the great
changes that have taken place in
the manner of living.
When one considers the way
farm work is done now,
compared to the days of the
cradle, the reaper and so on,
down to the present with our
modern means of travel,
automation, hydro-electric
power, etc., we wonder what the
next decade will bring forth.
These trees, as it were, stood
silent guard during all this
transition, noiselessly adding
their rings of growth, year after
year.
