The energetic members of the Hensall Western
Horsemen club are holding their third annual Frontier
Days this week-end at Hensall Community Park.
The popular event will get underway Friday night
With a western horse show at 7:30. A dance will follow
at 10 o'clock and will continue until two o'clock
Saturday morning.
Anyone purchasing a tidket to the dance will be
entitled to a free helping of the beef barbecue that will
be a feature of the Friday evening festivities.
If appetites are still rampant Saturday morning
after partaking of the generous helpings of beef, a
pancake and sausage breakfast will he served for a three
hour period from 7 to 10 a.m. All the pancakes and
maple syrup you can eat will be served for one dollar.
Saturday afternoon at one o'clock it's western
horse show time again including a special event of little
britches calf riding.
For the first time in the three year history of
Frontier Days a midway will be on the grounds both
Friday and Saturday to please the children.
Brand new trophies for all events have been
donated by Hensall and district business people. We had
a look at these awards Monday night and they are
certainly worth competing for.
We hope the weatherman co-operates on Friday
and Saturday to make Frontier Days a huge success. The
executive is putting in a lot of time and effort in getting
ready for the big event. Lloyd Mousseau is president of
the Western Horsemen with Bob Baker handling the
secretarial duties. Other members of the executive are
George Beer, Ron Swartz and Alvin Taylor.
Rodeo Plans Progressing
While it seems that summer has barely started
only seven weeks remains until the sixth annual
Midwestern Rodeo is slated for Exeter Community
Park.
The big event has been set for the Labour Day
week-end with an afternoon and evening show on
Saturday and an afternoon performance on Sunday.
This means three performances instead of the previous
two shows.
Secretary Dalton Finkbeiner reports that several
new features have been added to this year's program in
an effort to increase interest and attendance.
For the first time a parade will be held on Friday
evening with enthusiastic local horseman Fred Darling in
charge of arrangements.
Last year's chairman Dick Roelofson has been
handed a new responsibility this year, that of organizing
a Rodeo Queen contest. It is expected girls will be
chosen from area communities to compete for the
Rodeo title.
Bill Smith is the chairman of a busy board of
directors that includes representatives from every service
organization in town in addition to the Saddle Club,
Exeter Fair Board and RAP.
Carf Cann will handle the publicity and Dr. Don
Ecker will be in charge of the grounds.
Additional portable 'seats are being procured to
take care of the anticipated large crowds.
We see reminders of the rodeo daily as many of
the local business people are already wearing hats
advertising the rodeo. They are now on sale at various
outlets for $1.50.
Secretary Finkbeiner told us there is a possibility
chariot races may be added to this year's program.
Brahma bull riding will be presented for the
second time in addition to the regular events such as
bull dogging, calf roping, bronc riding and barrel and
flag racing.
The committee in charge is making full plans to
take care of the appetities of the many visitors expected
to attend the show. In addition to the concession
booths that will be operated by the various local service
clubs, other groups may join in on providing top notch
food.
Officials of the Zurich Bean festival are interested
in serving baked beans, the Hensall Western Horsemen
are considering setting up a beef barbecue stand and
officials of the Exeter Curling club may be dishing up
delicious barbecued chicken.
The Exeter rodeo is only one of five held
annually in the province and is sanctioned by the
Ontario Rodeo Association. Other approved rodeos in
Ontario will be held at Leamington, Oxbow, Preston
and Hespeler.
The Hespeler show will be held on Labour Day
and will include many entries that will be here in Exeter
the two days previous.
BASEBALL QUICKIES
If the Boston Red Sox would occasionally use
Carl Yastremski who is of Polish descent at various
positions could he be called a Utility Pole?
Stan Musial insists a deck of cards can keep a ball
player in good shape. "No, you don't play gin rummy or
poker with them, You just throw the cards on the floor
and then bend over from the waist and pick them up
one at a time.
Dick Stuart while playing in the Japanese league
explained why he rode the bench so much. "The
manager was in the Japanese Air Force during the war
and didn't like Americans."

The latest week of action in
the Exeter and district Rec
softball league produced both
low and high scoring games,
On Thursday night, the
pitchers were in command with
the Legion edging the Kinsmen
3-2 on the Exeter diamond and
Grand Bend blanking Huron
Park 4-0 on the Huron Park
diamond.
Monday night it was a
completely different story. In
Exeter the Legion walloped
Huron Park 20-3 and at the
Bend Snell's Shell squeezed past
the Grand Bend nine by a score
of 14-11.
Tonight, Thursday, Huron
Park and the Kinsmen meet at
Exeter Community Park while
the Legion travels to Grand
Bend while Monday Snell's Shell
and the Legion will do battle on
the local field.
NEWCOMERS HELP
A couple of additions to the
Snell's Shell line-up were
instrumental in a hitting way in
the 14-11 win in Grand Bend,
Monday night.
Allan Law smashed out five
safe hits while Bob Blackburn
contributed three safeties to the
winning cause. Larry Willert also
added three hits to the winning
cause.
For Grand Bend, Dick
Coulter, Larry Lovie and Paul
Greenwood each collected two
hits while single blows were
delivered by Lorne Vincent, Bud
Desjardine, Barry Clarke and
Ron Crown.
Jack Fuller was the winning
pitcher for Snell's while Paul
Courtney who was relieved by
Lorne Vincent in the fifth took
the pitching loss for Grand
Bend.
TWO BIG INNINGS
The Legion nine enjoyed two
big innings in their 20-3 win
over Huron Park, Monday. After
scoring only four times in the
first four innings they broke
loose with seven markers in the
fifth and added nine more in a
sixth inning outburst.
Huron Park took a temporary
lead in the second inning when
Robby Farquhar doubled to
open the frame and scored on
infield outs.
Murray Brintnell's single
along with a walk and a couple
of errors sent three Legion runs
home in the third. Another
single by Brintnell sent Wes
Hodgins across the plate in the
fourth.
Dean McKnight's double and
singles from thetats of Brintnell
and Barry Greenacre were
mainly responsible for the seven
run Legion rally in the fifth.
In the sixth a combination of
walks, errors, singles by
Greenacre and Hodgins and two
base blows by Gord Slaght and
McKnight produced the final
nine Legion runs in the sixth.
Huron Park managed their
final two runs in the seventh
More than 400 children from
Exeter and district are well on
their way to becoming better
swimmers this summer. About
50 are also participating in some
of the finer arts of swimming
such as speed, style and diving.
Diving and style are held
from 4:30 to 5 daily and speed
is held from 5 to 6, Anyone
interested in joining these are
welcome.
Adult swimming leSsons will
be held front 6:30 to 1:30 each
night Monday through Friday
starting Monday, July 14. The
cost will be only $1 a week, so
why not come and learn to swim
and if you can already swim why
not improve.
Adult open swimming will be
held Tuesday and ThurSday
nights from 9 to 10 beginning
bext Tuesday, July 15.

when Don Cooper reached first
on an error, Rick Schroeder
walked and both steed as the
result of singles by Don Appleby
and Gary Riehl.
Gord Slaght was the winning
Legion pitcher while Don
Appleby was the starter and
loser for Huron Park.
VINCENT BLANKS HP
Lorne. Vincent on the mound
for Grand Bend was in top form
Thursday night as he blanked
Huron Park and his team-mates
came up with four runs. Grand
Bend scored three times in the
first inning and added the fourth
run in the sixth.
Barry Clarke was the top hit
producer for the winners with
two singles and a double while
Harvey Vincent banged out a
triple.
VERY FEW HITS
Base hits were few and far
between in the Legion's 3-2 win
A combination of a veteran
performer and a couple of
youngsters proved to be
successful for" the Dashwood
Tigers Sunday afternoon as they
came up with their second win
of the season in Huron-P,erth
intermediate baseball play.
Robbie "Eppie'r Wein, a star
hurler with the Dashwood OBA
champs of 1953 made his first
pitching start of the season a
winning one as his teammates
came up with a lot of hits in
downing the Zurich Lumber
Kings 16-3.
Wein, who made two brief
appearances in relief earlier in
the season struck out 19 Lumber
King batters on the way to his
triumph.
While the veteran right
hander was keeping the Zurich
bats in check, the youngsters in
the Dashwood lineup were
providing the batting power.
Bud Desjardine and John
Hayter each picked up three hits
while Jim Hoffman and Jim
Hayter each rattled off two safe
blows. Desjardine's third inning
home run over the left field
fence at the Dashwood diamond
with two mates aboard to tie the
score at 3-3 was the biggest
blow of the game.
Bill Schade had walked and
Pete Ravelle was safe on an error
before Desjardine stroked the
ball out of the park.
Zurich moved in front in the
second inning when pitcher Dick
Bedard drew a walk and came
home on Gerald Schantz's single.
The final Lumber King scores
came in the top of the fourth
when Dick Bedard, Schantz and
0. Bedard stroked singles.
Dashwood scored three times

PLAYGROUND
We would like to outline
some of the coming events to all
the parents of children attending
this years playground,
Between the dates of July 7
and August 9th, each week day
there will be supervised games,
hikes, singsongs and crafts for all
children of Exeter school-age to
thirteen.
Also, there will be a penny
carnival, parades, a bean supper
and camp out at Riverview Park,
a three day long camp out at
Morrison Dam for the older
children and Playday, held this
year at Hanover.
On Friday, July 4, a
scavenger hunt was staged to
collect supplies for this years
arts and crafts programme.
We'd like to thank all those
who donated tb the playground
and hope this interest is carried
out in the weeks to come,
over the Kinsmen, Thursday.
Gord Slaght on the mound
for the winning Legion nine and
Don Bell tossing for the
Kinsmen each allowed five hits
in the well played contest.
The Legion took a two run
early lead in the top of the third
on base hits byrGerry Finnen
and Murray Brintnell.
The Kin club fought back to
score once in their half of the
same inning on a bunt by Bryan
Hogg and a double delivered by
Jim Russell.
Russell tied the game for the
Kinsmen with a bases empty
two-out home run in the bottom
of the fifth.
The teams battled on even
terms until the bottom of the
seventh, Wes Hodgins walked
with one out, moved to third on
Gerry Finnen's single and scored
the winning run when catcher
Murray Brintnell's grounder was
bobbled.
in the fifth frame to move in
front to stay. Jim Hayter singled
to open the inning, Bob
Hoffman was safe on an error
and both scored on Bill Schade's
double. Schade came in to count
on a single from the bat of Gord
Vincent.

produced four runs put the
