Leader retiring from CGIT after 37 years of service Discuss further CE workshops A meeting of the Christian Education Committee was held at Lucan United. Church Tuesday, June 24. Mrs. William Froats, M-s. R.B. Worthington, Mrs. F. Saward, Cliff Culbert, Ed Melanson and Rev. W.C. Tupling attending; Mr. Melanson, as Chairman. Question of holding a further CE workshop was discussed, and Mrs. Saward, secretary, will send letters to churches in North Middlesex for their views on this subject. Church Sunday School will be closed for the summer months, and will re-open September 7, which will be Promotion Sunday. Mrs. Robert Patterson will be replacing Mrs. Ed Melanson as teacher of three to four year olds. Mrs. Melanson will be a CGIT leader and Mrs. M.H. Hodgins is retiring from this work. Members of each group present, reported on the work accomplished since the last CE meeting. Mr. Melanson reported ordering "News Bulletins" for leaders of senior and intermediate groups. Mrs. M. H. Hodgins has spent 37 years working with young people. She commenced teaching beginners' class in Crampton United Church at the age of 16, continuing until she married 11 years later. With Mrg. Arthur Kewley started the Explorer Program at By MRS. J. H. PATON Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Cunningham entertained the Ritchie clan Sunday at their home. There were 75 in attendance from Grand Bend, Parkhill, London, St. Pauls, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Emery arranged a surprise reception at their home for Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kennedy on the occasion of their 42nd wedding Mr. & Mrs. Bob Patterson were guests at the 25th wedding anniversary celebration of Mr. & Mrs. Ross Hoggarth in the Legion Hall, Mitchell, last Saturday. PERSONALS Miss Rosemary Fischer and Miss Joan Hartsell of Dunnville are spending a week with Mrs. Katherine Fischer. Mrs. Anna Jeanne Thompson and son Tommy, Mrs. Olive Handley and two daughters were visitors of Mrs. Katherine Fischer last Thursday. Miss Ann Hebblethwaite, Oregon, Wisconsin, and niece, Lisa Boyd, Madison, Wisconsin, Mrs. A. Stollberg, daughter and granddaughter Mrs. and Miss Newville, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, spent four days with Mrs. Marion McFee, Margaret Street, UNITED Regular Sunday morning service was held at Lucan United Church with Rev. W. C. Tupling in charge. His sermon was entitled "Christ the Hope of the World." The Church was far from being full, although members of Holy Trinity were welcome to join the United congregation while Rev. R. A. Carson is on vacation. Some parents are not aware that their little ones can be cared for in the nursery class as in their own Church. Next Sunday, July 6, the Sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated, and it is hoped that a larger congregation, both United and Anglican, will be participating. COUPLES' CLUB Members of Lucan United Church Couples' Club met last Thursday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Barr for their regular meeting. After a short business session, Stewart McLellan and Ed. Melanson led a singsong on their guitars. A barbecue lunch was in the charge of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Froats, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Barr and Mr. and Mrs. Stewart McLellan. It should be noted that the Couples' Club has now installed the second section of folding doors, which make three classrooms on the lower floor of the Christian Education building. This is much appreciated by the Church Sunday School. EVENING UNIT UCW Regular monthly meeting of the Evening Unit of the UCW anniversary, Wed., June 24. Mrs. Emery had decorated her home and provided a smorgasbord supper, and many friends and relatives of the couple were present. Lucan. All spent the day last Saturday with Mr. & Mrs. Carey, Walter St. Port Stanley and Port Burwell. Friday evening, Mrs. McFee also entertained guests, Mrs. Violet Hebblethwaite and Frances Hebblethwaite from London, and Mrs. Louise Sutherland from Ailsa Craig. Mrs. Gary Mair and family have returned from a few days spent with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. James Harkness at Teeswater. Mrs. Kay Haggai has returned home and is progressing quite satisfactorily. Mrs. W. F. Patterson, Parkhill, visited with Mr. & Mrs. Robert Patterson for a few days. Mrs. Bob Coleman held a family gathering at her home in honour of her daughter's birthday, Mrs. W. W. Garrett of London. was held at Lucan United. Church. Mrs. H.B. Langford and Mrs. Stewart Park led the Worship Service. Mrs. Langford read, "The Appreciation of Graces,'; and Mrs. Park read, "The Legend of the Black Madonna." There was a short discussion on quilting completed, and yet to be done, and wedding receptions to be catered for. Mrs. Alex Young read a chapter from the Study Book, "Man in Life," entitled, "The Revolution Against Work." • Mrs. W.C. Tupling will take the Study Book at the next meeting in September. A delicious lunch was served by Mrs. Earl Young, Mrs. Orville Jones and Mrs. Stewart Park. FRIENDSHIP UNIT UCW The Friendship Unit of the UCW of Lucan United Church, and husbands of the members, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. Jones, at a barbecue. It was a social event for the last meeting before the summer holidays and all had an enjoyable time. Former friends at ham supper The Strawberry and Ham Supper at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Wednesday, prepared by the ladies of the church, was a great success. There were many friends from distant parts, and old neighbours present. Among these were Mr. and Mrs. Art McLean, Miss Holly Martin, Miss Line Abbott and Mrs. Harry Tilbury. Lucan Tops visit Exeter Lucan District TOPS "Streamliners" met last Tuesday instead of Wednesday, so that they could join the Exeter club at their meeting. Weigh-in was good, but very little business was attended to, as all members concentrated on finishing the banner in time for the Convention at Toronto. Members attended meeting and crowning of Exeter Centennial Slimmers. The Queen crowned at this ceremony was Mrs. Elsie McDonald and the runner-up, Mrs. Jo Anne Riggs, Games were enjoyed and a delicious diet lunch served by the hostess branch. At the Toronto Convention the ladies were thrilled at the display of beautiful banners, but were satisfied that their own effort was at least shown in the gallery. The Queen crowned at this convention was a lady who had lost 165 lbs, in the year. Most interesting item to members, and biggest incentive to keep trying to lose weight, was the "Baggy Dress" parade. This consisted of ladies wearing dresses they had worn, before Metropolitan United Church in 1936 and continued as Counsellor and Chief Counsellor until 1946 when she resigned to have her family. Also during this time she was most active in Young Peoples' work both in Metropolitan and on Presbytery and Conference level. Exeter, Zion, Lucan and Clandeboye. Coming the farthest distance were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hunter and Paula, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Clare Ritchie and family, Sarnia and Jerry Knight, Rodney. MRS. LAURA BLAKE Funeral service for Mrs. Laura Mae (McAlpine) Blake, 83, widow of the late Thomas Blake, McGillivray Township, was held Sunday in Ailsa Craig at the T. Stephenson and Son Funeral Home. Rev, R. B. Johnston presided for the funeral service. Interment was in Mars Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gordon Hyde, London; Leslie Hartle, Ailsa Craig; Blake Hyde, Paisley; Ronald Hartle, Ailsa Craig; Wilmer 'Make, Ailsa Craig and Arnold Blake, Clandeboye, Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Cecil (Jennie) Hartle, McGillivray; one brother, Russell McAlpine, Ailsa Craig and four gran dchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Cora Hyde. PERSONALS Roy Cunningham is a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital, London, where he underwent surgery, Robert Hornell is home again after sometime, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Miss Elizabeth Hill is home for the summer from Ottawa, Stephan Carter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Carter is at Chickigarti Camp near Goderich, District farmer dies in St, Marys John Wilbert Hobbs of Lot 26, Concession 3, West Nissouri Township, died suddenly in St. Marys Memorial Hospital, Friday, June 27, in his 68th year. He was the son of the late Wesley and Ella Hobbs. He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. William (Jean) Hueston and Mrs. Stanley (Eileen) Elliott of Thorndale, Mrs. James (Alma) O'Rourke, Elmira N.Y. and Mrs. Baden (Eva) Kaiser of London; and three brothers, William of London and Alfred and Evert of Toronto. The body rested at the Lindsay Funeral Home, St. Marys, where the funeral service was held, Monday, June 30, Cremation followed in Woodland Crematorium. John Hobbs was a cousin of Hubert Jones of Exeter. He had many cousins living in Lucan and district. reducing, and were extremely funny. Local members returned home very tired but determined to qualify for the "Baggy Dress" parade next year. In June 1950 the Hodgins moved to Lucan and in September Mrs. Hodgins started the Explorer program for Lucan-Clandeboye Churches, with members from other village churches taking part. She continued as Chief Counsellor until 1958 when she resigned to become W.I. President, but returned in 1960 trained a new Chief Counsellor and then went on to lead the C.G.I.T. Here she has remained until this year when she is retiring as C.G.I.T. leader. Mrs. Hodgins taught the Nursery-Kindergarten class in the Lucan United Church for several years,. graduating to Junior Girls, on to the Senior class and back to Junior Girls. She is presently a substitute teacher for any of the more junior classes, is retiring secretary for the C.E. Committee and Membership Secretary and Vice-Pres. of U.C.W. Junior Girls' Camping commenced in Middlesex Presbytery in the summer of 1951 with Mrs. Hodgins on staff, at Bimini, near Stratford and since that time until 1967 she has been most active in camping, directing 13 of those years, plus working on the Board of Directors and Camping Committee for Camp Kee-Mo-Kee, when it was built.
