Hensall nursing home plans open house
LARGE STAFF — Part of the Queensway staff is shown with the home owners, Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Klungel, right. The staff members from the left are: Mrs. Don Volland, Mrs. Jim Aikenhead, Mrs. Bob
Lavery, Mrs. Jack Corbett, Mrs. Elam Shantz and Mrs. Bill Belling.
BLEND OLD AND NEW — This photo shows how well the new addition blends in with the gracious
home which constituted the Queensway Nursing Home previously. The addition is to the rear and left of
the home featured by its circular verandahs.
Area residents invited
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Klungel,
operators of the Queensway
Nursing Home, Hensall, have
extended an invitation to all area,
residents to view their new
addition, Saturday.
Open house at the enlarged
nursing home will be from. 2;00
to 9;00 p.m.
Tours will be conducted
through the new section of the
building and staff members will
be on hand to answer any
queries over a cup of tea
following each tour.
The addition at the home is a
three-storey structure, measuring
53' by 31' and brings the
capacity of the home to a total
of 48 residents.
The basement section of the
new wing contains the utility
rooms, kitchen, staff lounge,
dining room and the office.
The other two floors contain
single and double-sized
bedrooms, featuring a bright,
refreshing atmosphere for the
residents.
The new plastic flooring has
been used throughout to give the
home a gleaming appearance
from one end to the other.
The Queensway Nursing
Home was opened about 12
years ago by Mr. and Mrs. Orville
Jones and Harry and. Ann
Klungel took over the ownership
on September 1,1964.
They are both Registered
Nursing Assistants and Harry
previously worked at the
Ontario Hospital in Woodstock,
while his wife was on the staff of
the General Hospital in the same
city.
Construction of the 15-bed
addition was completed about
two months ago and all the
landscaping has been finished.
In addition to the
proprietors, there are nine
persons on staff.
Mrs. Bill Belling, RN, Exeter,
is the resident nurse and the
nursing aides include: Mrs, Don
Volland, Hensall; Miss Connie
VanBaaren, Hensall; Mrs. Jack
Corbett, RR 1 Exeter; Mrs. Bob
Lavery, Hensall; Mrs. Margaret
McLeod, Exeter; Mrs. John
Peckitt, Seaforth; Mrs. Elam
Shantz, Zurich.
The cook is Mrs. James
Aikenhead, Brucefield.
At the present time there are
22 residents at the Queensway
Nursing Home, the oldest being
Mrs. Wedge of Brantford, who
will celebrate her 90th birthday
next month.
The home takes nursing care
and convalescent patients.
NEW AND OLD
Area residents interested in
architecture will have an
opportunity to contrast the old
and the new during their visit to
the home Saturday.
The original home, which
contains eight bedrooms, was
constructed for Owen Geiger in
the mid 1920's. Mr. Geiger was a
well-known flax mill operator
and flax contractor.
The entrance to the home
features a large circular
verandah, which provides ample
room for residents to sit out and
enjoy the fine weather.

Severe storm
causes fire
Hensall firemen were called
to the home of Mrs. Mary
Hildebrant, Richmond Street,
about 9 p.m. Thursday night
when lightning struck a lean-to
at the rear of the home setting it
ablaze.
The severe electrical storm
which passed over Hensall
around 5 p.m. also did other
damage.
A large elm tree with a
double trunk on the farm of
Stewart Bell, one mile and a
quarter west of Hensall was
struck by lightning.
Several T. V. sets were
damaged and an electric clock
on the wall of a resident was
struck and completely
dismantled.
evident throughout the gracious
home and much of the
woodwork was constructed from
cherry wood.
The large fireplace is also
adorned with stained glass. It is
located inside the main entrance,
which also serves as a lounging
and reception area for staff and
residents.
General contractor on the
new addition was Don Oke Ltd.,
Zurich, and most of the
sub-trade work was handled by
district tradesmen.
Area residents will find a tour
of the Queensway most
interesting and the Klungels
extend an invitation to all to
attend the open house.
