DEADLINE JUNE
members questioned the vast
amount of gasoline being used in
the new cruiser and Chief Day
had been asked to check into the
matter.
His figures indicated the
cruiser was averaging about
seven miles per gallon and he
said this was due to the fact the
cruiser has a much larger engine
than the previous car, and also
that it was being operated in
town with a considerable
amount of stopping and starting.
In addition, much time is spent
with the engine idling so the
lights operate while accident
investigations are being
conducted.
Mayor Jack Delbridge said
council may have made a
mistake in having a big engine in
the car, but Reeve Derry Boyle
said the amount of repairs may
be lower than they would be
with a smaller engine.
Other information contained
in the police department's May
report was as follows:
Eight accidents were
investigated with property
damage of $1,845; two places of
business were found insecure; 19
charges were laid under the
Highway Traffic Act, four under
the Liquor Control Act and 23
parking tags were issued; there
were two thefts over $50 and
two under.
No square deal
says subdivider
Local subdivider Gib Dow
complained to council this week
that he wasn't getting a square
deal from the Public Utilities
Commission regarding the
installation of hydrants in his
subdivision on the east side of
Exeter.
He pointed out that under
the new local improvement
system he was responsible for
installing the water main and the
laterals as well as hydrants every
600 feet.
However, he said that under
the old system a water line had
been installed by the PUC on
Kingscourt Crescent within 88
feet of where a hydrant should
be.
Members of council agreed
that the cost for a hydrant at the
end of the 88 feet should be
paid by the PUC and authorized
that a letter be gent to the
Commission asking them to do
so.

Hensall fire chief resigns
as no new agreement mode
Clerk Earl Campbell
Announced a meeting in Hensall.
Town Hall June 1.1 to which all
area councils are invited, The
subject is area dumping grounds.
Council has agreed to call
tenders to paint the Town Hall,
uplifted for the last time ,five
years ago, Bids are to be
presented by the next meeting
of council.
Building permits were
approved for Wilmer Ferguson,
Cecil Kipfer, Ed Fink, George
Armstrong and Percy Campbell.,
meet with the townships of Hay
and Tuckersmith again this week
in an attempt to reach a
satisfactory agreement. It will
report to the firemen at their
meeting Monday evening when it
is hoped that firechief Sangster
will have cause to reconsider his
position.
There is a possibility Hensall
may have to "go it alone.'
At Monday's meeting toe,
there was a report on a May 12
meeting of council when two
public health inspectors and
representatives from the mills in
Hensall toured the dump
grounds with a view to settling
the dispute concerning it.
A bulldozer will be engaged
to clean up the mill dump under
the supervision of the public
health inspectors. An agreement
is proposed with the mill owners
who will be responsible for
policing and dumping once the
dump site work is completed.
Hensall fire chief Dave
Sangster has tendered his
resignation effective June 15,
Reeve Oliver Jaques told
Hensall council Monday evening
Sangster was "perhaps trying to
force the issue" for better fire
fighting equipment.
Council recalled Sangster's
threat some months ago to quit
the fire post if council did not
reach some agreement with the
townships to provide better fire
fighting equipment or entirely
opt out of the fire protection
business insofar as neighboring
municipalities were concerned.
It is understood that
Sangster, fire chief for about six
years, has some real fears about
the condition of the present
equipment if the Hensall brigade
is to provide adequate
protection for the village, and
the townships of Hay and
Tuckeremith.
Council's fire committee will
