This coming summer season promises to be a very
busy one as far as sports in this district are concerned,
On the baseball front, the Huron-Perth
intermediate league, one of the oldest in the province
aPpears to be away to one of its better years.
For the first time in many a moon, a total of
eight teams are competing in the league that is operated
under the guidance of president Bob Sadler of Staffa
and secretary John Livermore of Clinton.
From this immediate area, the Dashwood Tigers,
Hensall Merchants and Zurich Lumber Kings will give
baseball fans plenty of action with their distinct rivalry
that also exists on the hockey rink.
The other teams in the league are from Mitchell,
St. Marys, Thorndale, Walkerton and Clinton. The latter
club, back in the league after a lengthy absence looks
like it will be a strong contender for the league title.
During the past couple of years, Clinton minor teams
have fared very well in Ontario Baseball Association
competition, bringing home several championships.
In minor baseball ranks, a couple of new teams
are being heard from this year. Crediton and Huron Park
have filed entries in the Western Ontario Athletic
Association bantam series.
Dashwood continues its good minor program to
provide playing material for the intermediate Tigers by
fielding a midget and pee wee club, A pee wee team has
als6 been formed in Crediton but it is expected to play
exhibition games only for the coming season.
On the softball front, the Exeter Greys are again
competing in the Huron Ladies softball grouping and
were scheduled to play their first game Tuesday night at
Exeter Community Park.
Manager Pat Down and coach Jim Newby have
had a large group of girls out to practice and will have
no problems as far as quantity goes.
To • add a little extra local interest a girls team
from Huron Park has been entered in the same league.
Bowlers Are Busy
One of the most popular summer sports locally
that can be enjoyed by people of all ages is again off and
running. The Exeter lawn bowling club started the new
year last Wednesday with open bowling and a pot luck
supper.
President. Len McKnight and his enthusiastic
executive have lined up a busy program and have issued
an invitation to any newcomers that would like to take
up the summer sport.
Horses Busy, Too •
For those interested in horses, their summer
should also be a busy one. The Exeter Saddle club is
holding a show once a month throughout the summer
and one of the newer groups the Exeter Pony Trotting
club is holding race meets every other Sunday.
The ponies raced at the local track for the first
time Sunday afternoon and attracted a large crowd of
fans. The Exeter club is part of the Big Four racing
circuit that also included Forest, Thedford and Sarnia.
Saturday June 14 is the date set for the annual
Mid Western Quarter Horse Show slated for Exeter
Community Park.
The local event that starts in the morning and
runs until dark is rated as the best and largest quarter
horse show in the province of Ontario.
To maintain its "A" category, a quarter horse
show must draw a minimum of 225 entries. A trail class
and English pleasure are being added to the program for
this year.
Directors of the Rodeo Association are also
making plans for a bigger and better rodeo to be held on
the Saturday and Sunday of the Labour Day weekend.

THE ENTRIES WERE LEO TO THE POST - Fans at Sunday's
pony races at Exeter Community Park were treated to all the frills of
big.time racing, Above, Barbara Parsons is shown on her lead pony
which paraded the entries in front of the grandstand before each race.
The first race meet of the
season of the Huron Pony
Trotting Association was held at
Exeter Community Park,
Sunday with more than 400
spectators on hand.
The muddy condition of the
track due to heavy rains failed to
dampen the enthusiasm of the
ponies and drivers and many
good races were run off.
President Jack Parsons and
his executive are pleased with
the number of people who have
expressed interest in the new
project.
The preliminaries to the races
themselves had a professional
touch. Barbara Parsons rode the
lead pony in the post-parade
while Fred Windsor drove the
strating car and Art Hodgins
operated the starting gate.
The afternoon was climaxed
with a draw fora pony, cart and
harness. Cliff Shipley of Lucan
was the winner of the pony, the
cart went to Grant Skinner,
Exeter, and Bill O'Brien of
Wyoming won the set of harness.
The local trotting club plans
on holding a similar race meet
every second Sunday with the
next slated for Sunday, June 15.
The results of the afternoon
races are as follows: First race —
