DEADLINE JUNE 7 Local group away on flying trip to Europe Lucan Horseman's Club held a most successful horse show Saturday at the Lucan Arena Ring. There were 20 events on the program featuring Western and English horses, and pony carts. Ninety horses were entered. Prizes presented included cash, trophies, ribbons, horse blankets and halters. The show was preceded by a parade through Lucan and prizes for best-dressed riders were given to Brian McComb for best comic entry; Robert Philips for best pony-cart; Kathy Stilson for best dressed English rider under 16 years; and Maria Grensven best dressed over 16. UCW The regular general meeting of the UCW was held at Lucan United Church last Tuesday with 22 members present. Mrs. J.W. Lockyer presided. Mrs. Cecil Robb and Mrs. Lockyer took the worship service. Miss Gail McCall of the Women's Section of the London Rescue Mission gave an interesting talk on the work of the Mission, and answered many questions. Lucan Horseman's Club has a really busy season planned, with instruction for both English and Western riders, one night a week. ANGLICAN Sunday morning service at Holy Trinity Church was in the charge of Rev. R.A. Carson. This was a Special Children's Service, at which the League of Loyalty paid tribute to Miss Lina Abbott, London, who had taught the children for 16 years. During the service the reading of the Psalm was led by Frances Elson, and the lesson was read by Julie Henderson. The Lucan United Church Junior Choir with its director Norman Steeper and choir mother Mrs. H.B. Langford, joined the Anglican Junior Choir with Mrs. C. Hardy at the organ and the junior choir mother Mrs. Calvin Haskett. Mr. Carson's sermon was especially for the children. During the announcements Peter Culbert and Jeffery Culbert presented a gift to Miss Abbott. Peter and Jeffery had completed 11 and 10 consecutive years respectively without missing a Sunday, before they joined the Church. Julie Hardy, an earlier perfect attender, presented a bouquet of flowers. Miss Abbott who now lives at the McCormick home in London said it had been the hardest thing to leave the children and it was wonderful to be back. She was overjoyed when the children ran up and embraced her. Following the service Mrs. Frank Hardy Jr., leader of the League, and the mothers of the league children served lunch in the Church Hall. During the service, Michelle Anne-Marie Lewis, daughter of Philip Wayne Lewis and Mary-Ellen (nee) English were baptized. After the service Shannon Raynette Shipley, daughter of Peter Donald Shipley and Donna Raynette Blake was baptized. BOARD OF MANAGEMENT Board of management of the Anglican Church met Tuesday, May 20, and it was decided to have the furnace and building committee proceed with plans to install a new heating system, and to go ahead with plans to fix the plaster and repair the tower brickwork. The meeting was reminded that June 29, Juiy 6, 13, 20 and 27 the Church will be closed and the congregation will join the United Church congregation for worship. Then on August 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 the United Church congregation will meet with the Anglican Church congregation for worship. June 15 at 11 a.m. the 60th Anniversary of the present Church building will be remembered at an Anniversary Service. Rev. J.F. Wagland, a former rector, now of St. Thomas will be the preacher. From July 7 to August 15 Rev. R.A. Carson will be attending a Clinical Pastoral Training Course in Hamilton through McMaster University. ANGLICAN SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday School Teachers met May 21, in the Parish Hall. It was decided the Annual Sunday School awards would be given out June 22 at the 11 a.m. service. After the service the Sunday School picnic will be held in the Lion's Park in Lucan. Sunday School Will not meet at 9.45 a.m. until Sept. 7. Instead the children are asked to attend the 11 a.m, church service. Quilting lessons for CGIT girls Lucan Clandeboye CGIT held their 18th regular meeting, May 20, at Lucan United Church under the leadership of Mrs. R,B. Worthington. Julie Noyes led the worship service. Mrs. Worthington took her group for Bible Study, while the other groups discussed "Social Services and Moral Issues." There was a discussion on the mother and daughter banquet. The girls were all well pleased with the food, and everything that was arranged for them. Maureen Smith's talk on Mexico was much appreciated and the graduates, Grace Smith, Betty Park, Janis Freeman and Marlene Butler were very pleased to receive their CGIT pins. Members are now going to learn to quilt so that they can make the squares they have been painting with liquid embroidery, into a quilt for the Teen Girls' Home, and a smaller one for the War Memorial Childrens' Hospital. Nuisance calls being checked Police report receiving several complaints from Lucan residents, who have experienced nuisance telephone calls. recently. They advise that anyone receiving any calls of this nature should not attempt to converse with the caller but hang up immediately. If further calls are received, contact the police who are investigating this problem. Mount Zion United Church, London, was decorated with white mums, for a double-ring ceremony when the Rb'tr. George Payne united in marriage Nancy Margaret Saddington and Donald Leroy Maguire. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Saddington, London, and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Gordon Maguire of Lucan. Given in marriage by her brother Harold Saddington, the bride had chosen a formal gown of silk lagoda, trimmed with guipure lace. The gown was fashioned with the Edwardian look, high neckline of the guipure lace, • empire waist-line and elbow-length sleeves, outlined with matching lace. The long detachable train was of similar material to the gown and trimmed with lace to match and four-tiered, elbow-length veil of silk illusion was held by a flowered headpiece. She carried a bouquet of pink rosebuds, white carnations, lily-of - t he-valley and white stephanotis. Mrs. Dale Froats, Lucan, her matron of honour, and her bridesmaids, Miss Peggy Stewart, London, Mrs. William Park, Petrolia and Miss Carole Chappell, London, wore Tops offer more recipes Lucan and District Streamliner Tops held their regular meeting last Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Gary McKenzie with Mrs. McKenzie presiding. It was a small meeting, only five members present owing to other commitments. There was one weigh-in, and although four members had lost weight, two little pigs went home. Mrs. Roland Carty was Queen for the week, and everyone was pleased to see her back, after two weeks absence owing to illness. There was no mystery prize. Plans were made for registration at the Toronto Convention. Many requests have been received for more diet recipes. The following one for sauerkraut is well-liked: One jar (1 qt.) sauerkraut; 1 can (41/2 oz,) pimento; 1 cup diced celery; 1 large onion sliced thin in rings; and 1 green pepper. In a saucepan mix 2/3 cup vinegar, 1/3 cup water, 1/2 cup cooking oil, 2 tbsps. artificial sweetener or 1/2 cup white sugar and heat to boiling point. Cool, pour over vegetables, toss lightly, put into a sealed container and refrigerate. This may be served after 24 hours and will keep up to three weeks. 4-H CALF CLUB The Lucan 4-H Calf Club held their monthly meeting May 21. The meeting was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James O'Shea. The topic was Livestock Feeding Terms. identical floor-length dresses of turquoise • peau de charm,- - featuring skimmer skirts and empire waist-lines. The best man was Larry Greenlee, Lucan, and the ushers were Terry Maguire, London, Dennis Maguire, brother of the groom, Lucan, and Ronald Saddington, brother of the bride, London. Music was provided by Miss Marilyn Dickson. At the reception held at Hook's Restaurant, London, the bride's mother wore a mint parfait coat and dress with matching accessories and orchid corsage. She was assisted by the groom's mother who chose a banana-yellow coat and dress with flowered hat and rosebud corsage. For a trip to Northern Ontario the bride wore a paddy green coat and dress, flowered hat and black accessories, with orange rosebud corsage. The young couple will make their home in London. Wedding guests had travelled from Calgary, Winnipeg, Wisconsin, Kingston, Welland, Guelph, Paris, Stratford, Chatham and Petrolia. WI completes bus trip plans The regular monthly meeting of the Lucan Women's Institute was held last Thursday at the home of Mrs. Cecil Robb with the new president, Mrs. Frances Saward in the chair. Following the installation of officers by Past-President Mrs. Frank Hardy Sr., the roll call was answered by 17 members and two guests. Plans were finalized for a coffee party to be held Friday, May 30 in Nevin's Motor Showroom from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A bus trip is being arranged to visit Dundurn Castle and the Botanical Gardens, Tuesday, June 17. Mrs. H. Snelgrove won the mystery prize which had been donated by Mrs. Robb. A letter of thanks was read from the Lucan 4-H girls club for the spoons presented by the WI. Guest speaker, Mrs. Marney Roe, Women's Editor of the London Free Press, spoke on the newspaper industry and answered many questions on the gathering of news and distribution of newspapers. Lunch was served by Mrs. Robb and Mrs. Guy Ryan assisted by Joan Lockyer and Karen Hodgson. Miss Angela Armitt of London took her niece Brenda Haskett, and Miss Olive Hodgins, London, her niece Miss Elizabeth Ballard of Windsor on a trip to Europe. They left London airport May 21 and will spent a few days in England, then to Amsterdam, Netherlands for two days, Copenhagen, Denmark for two days, Zurich, Switzerland for two days, Venice, Italy for three days, then back to London, England until they return to London, Canada June 12. PERSONALS Colonel William J, Doohan and wife Pat of Ottawa were recent visitors with Miss Helen Kelly. Mr. & Mrs. Peter Sovereign and family, Mr. & Mrs. Earl Atkinson, Mr. & Mrs. Howard McDonald and Mrs. Bob Coleman attended the anniversary service at St. Patrick's Church Saintsbury Sunday. Mr. & Mrs. John P.. Quinn and family are now living in the house on Alice Street vacated by Larry Hotson. Mrs. Roscoe Hodgins and Elizabeth were Sunday guests of D.A. Ashworth and attended service at Holy Trinity Church where they placed flowers in memory of Mrs. David Ashworth. Mr. & Mrs. Sheridan Revington held a family dinner Sunday to celebrate the 17th birthday of their grandson, Gregory Revington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Revington. Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Dickens, Mr. & Mrs. Lorne McFalls, London, and Miss Rea, Toronto, were guests of Mrs. Bob Coleman one day last week. Mr. & Mrs. Stewart Park have returned from a motor trip to Victoria B.C. via USA and returning by the Canadian Highway. Miss Margaret Sach has finished her two-year course in Toronto, and graduated May 16. She is now a social worker with the Family and Children's Services of London and Middlesex County. Mr. & Mrs, Stanlake, Mrs. William Snell and Mr, & Mrs. Ray Fischer visited with Mrs. Katherine Fischer on the weekend, Lions working on park clean-up The 'regular meeting of the Lucan and District Lions' Club was cancelled in favour of the fireworks display, which they gave in conjunction with members of the Lucan Branch of the Canadian Legion on the Victoria Day Holiday, May 19. As usual it was a good show, and was enjoyed by a large crowd of young and older people who had assembled at the Community Centre. Members of the Club have made a good job of cleaning-up the grounds at the Lions' Park, and arrangements are being made to erect two barbecues there. Hockey night will be held at the next regular meeting, Monday, June 2, when Chicago Black Hawk's "Pit" Martin will be guest speaker.
