HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Exeter Times-Advocate, 1969-05-22, Page 12DON'T CAUSE SCENES LIKE THIS — Spring cleaning along
Ontario's highways is in full swing in preparation for the holiday
season. In the top photo, maintenance crews from the Department
of Highways collect litter scattered along the roadside during the
Winter season on part of the 13,000 miles of King's and Secondary
Highways. Bottom, these scattered pieces of litter add up to truck
loads of refuse. Last year, DHO spent $908,000 on the collection
and disposal of litter. As part of an anti-litter campaign, the
Department appeals to motorists to take along a litter bag and use it
instead of tossing litter out along the roadside.

Supports GFO cqmpgign.
Bennett denies rumours
In a strong statement issued in. Toronto recently, Delmer
Bennett denied rumours that he
is no longer supporting the
campaign for a General Farm
Organization in the province.
Mr. Bennett, a Forester Falls
farmer, met newsmen following
a meeting of the Legislature's
Committee on Agriculture and
Food. The committee gave
clause by clause approval to
legislation to provide for a
General Farm Organization in
the province.
Mr. Bennett, a former
member of the executive of the
Ontario Farmers' Union, said
that the Union Farmer was
completely wrong in saying that
he had dropped out of the GFO
campaign.
"I am still a member of the
GFO Campaign Committee. I am
working hard on the provincial
committee and I am working
hard in my local area to promote
a GFO," Mr. Bennett said.
"After the executive of the
Ontario Farmers Union asked
me to resign because of my
support of a GFO, the people
who had elected me in District
12, Renfrew, Carleton, and
Lanark counties, gave me a vote
of confidence. At least nine out
of 10 local farmers with whom I
have talked have told me I made
the right decision in supporting
the GFO campaign."
Mr. Bennett said that for at
least two years he has been
supporting the idea of one
general farm organization for the
Province as a stepping stone
toward a national farm
organization.
"In the GFO Campaign
Committee I have been able to
explain to other members what
Farmers Union members want in
a new organization," Mr.
Bennett said. "In the June
Ballot, farmers will have an
opportunity to decide the form
and structure of the organization
which could, in effect, be the
same as that proposed by the
Ontario Farmers Union and
called by the Union, Plan A."
"I have been convinced that
the legislation in no way
prevents integration of
marketing into the GFO as
proposed by the Ontario
Farmers Union. I have been
reassured by the statements of
the Minister of Agriculture &
Food who told the Legislature
committee that there is nothing
in the legislature to stop
producers from naming the GFO
as their marketing agent, if they
desire to do so."
In a statement to the
Legislature's committee on
Agriculture and Food, Orville
Guy, Vice-Chairman of the
Ontario Milk Marketing Board
assured the committee that the
OMMB is supporting the
formation of a GFO and is
interested in establishing close
and continuous liaison with
whatever commodity committee
of the GFO is to be charged with
responsibility for dairy industry
matters. The OMMB statement
approved the legislation and the
proposals of the GFO campaign
committee.
Mr. Bennett said he
considered it significant that the
statement of the OMMB had
been approved unanimously by
the OMMB. Some directors of
the OMMB are supporters of the
Ontario Farmers Union, Mr.
Bennett commented.
Rabbit breeders
to attend show
The May meeting of the
South Huron Rabbit Breeders'
Association was held in Elimville
Hall on Tuesday, May 13 with a
good turn out.
The evening's business began
with the minutes of the last
meeting read by Secretary Angus
Murray. The meeting was
chaired by Pres. Wm. John
Dickey ably assisted by
Vice-Pres. Wm. H. (Pat) Dickey.
An invitation was extended
to and accepted by the South
Huron club from the Lamb ton
Middlesex club to participate in
their annual rabbit show which
is planned for June 7 in Arkona.
Auctioneer for the Dutch
auction was Wm. Dickey and the
prize was won by Murray
Barber.
The next meeting of the club
will be held in Elimville Hall on
June 10 at 8:30 p.m. As the club
plans to recess for the summer
months, the June meeting will
be the last until September.

The wet cool weather is still
slowing down the spring seeding,
such, that the farmers are about
two weeks behind.
Some of the farmers on the
lighter, drained soil have
completed seeding their spring
grains and corn, with some of
the spring grain up. Recent
storms have caused a lot of
flooding which may kill some of
the spring seeding.
Growth is slow in the
pastures, hay, spring grains and
winter wheat, although the
winter wheat on the average
looks good with relatively little
winter kill.
Some of the cattle have been
turned out. Twitch grass is
growing very well!

It is an absolute necessity
that each commodity marketing
board be represented on the
Provincial Directors' Council of
the proposed Ontario General
Farm Organization. Each Board
should be represented by one
delegate who will have the
power to vote.
This is the basis for an
editorial statement by Charles G.
Munro, President of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture, to be
printed later this week.
Mr. Munro points out that
one of the key failures of the
present provincial farm
organizations has been the
power to communicate
effectively and quickly with the
individual farmer.
The Federation President
stresses that the farmer is a food
producer and a businessman.
"His marketing representative
will concentrate on his producer
problems. The GFO Local
representative will share his
problems as a businessman.
There must therefore, be a
co-ordination between the two
representatives. There is no
other way than if
elbow-to-elbow on the same
council."
Mr. Munro says that the
power to vote will make each
representative responsible to the
farmers who elected him. Each
will also therefore share the
responsibility of the actions of
the provincial council.
Two more men speak out
on the success of Treflan
"Now I've no time
for hoeing";
says Louis Ducharme.
"Last year
I even broadcast
my soybeans':
says Ralph King.
Examples like these say a lot more about
Treflan than we ever could.
Take Louis Ducharme. He found himself in a
situation where hoeing labor costs were cutting
deep into his profits. Now careful incorporation
of Treflan to the right depth into his white bean
crop has eliminated the need to hand hoe.

Or take Ralph King's example. Broadcasting
soybeans means big savings in cultivation
costs, and often increases in yield per acre .
But, like Ralph, you have to know your weed
control plan is completely effective. Treflan
really came through for Ralph. It can come
through for you.
