Representatives of South
Huron District High School
made an excellent showing at
the annual Huron-Perth
Conference track and field meet
held at St. Marys last week.
Larry Bourne, winner of the
midget title at the local school a
week earlier won the same
championship at the Conference
level and broke a league record
at the same time.
Bourne broke the 100-yard
dash record at 10.7 seconds in a
preliminary heat and equalled
the existing conference mark at
10.9 seconds in the final as he
won the event.
He also won the 120 yard
hurdles and joined with fellow
runners Randy Preszcator, Peter
Kleinstiver and Don Truemner in
equalling the 440 yard relay
mark at 50.5 seconds.
In junior boys events, Shane
McKinnon won the 120-yard
hurdles event in 17.2 seconds,
setting another record.
McKinnon teamed up with Steve
Stark, Pete Moore and Ron
Janke in finishing second in the
880-yard relay run.
Janke also finished second in
each of the 100-yard and
220-yard dashes and was
declared junior runner-up.
Another Conference mark
was eclipsed by a South Huron
student when Uilke Nagel
completed the 120-yard hurdles
course in 16.5 seconds. He also
placed second in the shot put
division.
While not setting any league
records, Leo Desjardine was the
first SHDHS student to run the
one mile and two mile distances
in times of under five minutes
and eleven minutes, respectively.
In the 10-team track and field
meet at St. Marys, South Huron
finished third in the boys events
and fifth in combined girls and
boys competition.
The best performance in the
girls events for South Huron was
turned in by Ellie Lansbergen as
she finished second in the discus
throw.

Rainy weather
spoils openings
Inclement weather over the
weekend caused postponement
of official openings planned by
two district sporting groups.
The continuous heavy rains
of Sunday forced officials of the
Huron County Pony Trotting
Association to cancel the first
scheduled racing meeting of the
season at Exeter Community
Park.
Local club president Jack
Parsons and his cohorts are
planning to run the first races on
Sunday, June 1 with the first
heat going at 1.30.
This Sunday, May 25, ponies
competing in the Big Four
circuit will be getting a chance
to show their speed at a similar
meet at Forest.
The other local group forced
to dispense with their first
official play of the season due to
the rains was the Exeter Lawn
Bowling club.
President Len McKnight has
re-scheduled the grand opening
for the lawn bowl enthusiasts for
Wednesday afternoon, May 28.

Could you keep up those
"easy" monthly payments
if your pay stopped ?
What would happen to you and your family if suddenly
your regular pay cheque was cut off because of a serious
accident or an illness? You, like most families, are
probably making payments on your house, your car
and other things that bring you a comfortable and en-
joyable life. Without your regular income could you
continue these payments or would there be a severe
adjustment in your living standards?
Manufacturers Life Can't guarantee that you'll always
be able to work. Nobody can. What we can guarantee
is that if you are laid-up with an illness or an accident
you'll still receive a regular pay cheque. Month after
month. Year after year.
Call the Man from Manufacturers. He'll be glad to help
you with a plan tailored to your needs. A plan with a
guarantee that the protection can be renewed to age 65 and whieh in the interval cannot
be changed or cancelled by the Company, regardless of what happens to your health, The
cost is reasonable; and with your family's financial security at stake you just can't afford
to be without it.

FOR U. GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Hockey camp
coming
During Friday's annual hockey banquet
sponsored by the Exeter Minor Hockey Association we
had the opportunity to chat for sometime with Paul
Roach who is in charge of the hockey and sport training
school to be held at Centralia's Industrial Park this
summer.
Roach, an enthusiastic supporter of hockey,
especially along the lines of International play has for
the last couple of years been the development officer
for Canada's National team.
As of Friday night, close to 300 registrations have
been received for the hockey school that is scheduled to
start at Centralia on June 29.
The Centralia camp has excellent facilities to give
the boys a chance to participate in many sports
activities. In addition to the Randall Memorial Arena,
the swimming pool, gymnasiums, baseball diamonds and
running track will be available for the summer.
The new hockey school is the first of its kind in
Canada as professional players are not used as
instructors. Physical training teachers from Canadian
Universities and members of our National team will be
in charge of the camp instruction.
In addition to hockey coaching, top notch
instructors in soccer and baseball are being brought in to
teach the youngsters. Any boys attending the camp are
certain to get the best possible instruction on the basic
fundamentals of hockey.
The camp with Paul Roach as director is being
operated by a non-profit organization, Canada Hockey
and Sport Training Centre Incorporated.
Any profits derived from the school will go to
provide national hockey team scholarships in the amount
of $2,500 each.
Roach and several private individuals are
providing their own funds to get the hockey school off
the ground. According to an agreement with the Ontario
Development Corporation, sponsors of the school are
splitting the costs of more adequate ice making
equipment at the Huron Park arena.
The present 75 horsepower unit is being replaced
by a 50 HP machine and ODC and Roach are each
adding a 30 HP unit.
Hockey school officials are paying ODC a total of
$6,000 for the use of the arena and rink personnel for
the summer. In addition it will cost the training camp
$10 per hour for use of the gymnasium and 25c per day
for each boy for use of the swimming pool.
Roach is expecting to open an office in Huron
Park within the next week to deal with hockey school
business. One of the directors, Ron Peterson, a former
Air Force pilot, now flying for Air Canada has leased a
house at Huron Park for a year and will be spending
most of his spare time in the area. Ron is married to the
former Eileen Hodgins of Crediton.
In speaking of past Canadian National teams,
Roach told us he hoped Hockey Canada Incorporated
under new coach Hap Emms would continue the
education aspect, but added, "We also need better
salaries for the boys competing for our country."
In the past, scholarships of $2,500 were provided
for Canada's national team roster. During recent years, a
total of 29 performers of the international team have
graduated from university.
Stressing the need for better coached clubs,
Roach said, "hockey in Canada is the worst coached
sport. We have only had one instructional film on the
basics of hockey in the past 15 years."
The former player development officer for
Canada's club said he was sorry to see some of the ideals
of Father David Bauer go by the boards with the new
set-up under Hockey Canada.
Despite detrimental reports in the Europe
newspapers and especially Sweden, he said the Canadian
team has always been well received by European fans
and the other teams.
Knowing of the calibre of men that will be
operating the Centralia hockey training camp and
handling the instruction, we feel sure any area
youngsters could do a lot worse than spend at least a
week there this summer.
Any boys wishing to make contact or receive
further information on the school may write to Paul
Roach at 1305 Canford in Clarkson, Ontario or contact
the Huron Park office that is expected to be set up very
shortly. We will pass on the address and telephone
number to our readers as soon as we recieve it from
Paul.
Another Rec Ball Meeting
Recreation Director Alvin Willert has called a
second meeting to attempt to organize the Exeter and
district Recreation softball league for the coming year.
Representatives of all teams wishing to play in the
popular play-for-fun loop this year are asked to be at
the Exeter Town Hall tonight, Thursday at eight
o'clock.
The first meeting called a couple of weeks ago
Was poorly attended with only Grand Bend officials on
hand. It is hoped teams from the Legion, Kinsmen, B-A
98's, Crediton and Huron Park will be ready to
participate this year.
