Variety show at
Medway school
The 19th annual variety show
WS presented by staff and
students of Medway High School
Thursday and Friday, May 8,9.
The guest orchestra from
North York, the Victoria Park
Secondary School Orchestra,
was excellent, and much
enjoyed, but every item, without
exception was good, and it was
hard to believe that the
performers were schoolchildren.
A few of the items which
stand out were the trumpets,
especially Bob Goddard, the
dance by Jane Hodgson, and the
excerpt from the "Sound of
Music" by Susan Crozier. The
modern dance by Julie Hardy
and the blended voices of the
Culbert brothers were much
enjoyed.
The program was quite long
but the items moved along
smoothly.

An, attempt by Lucan's
Central Hotel to have a strike by
six employees declared illegal
was dismissed last Wednesday by
the Ontario Labour Relations
Board.
The hotel claimed the strike
was illegal because of an
improper strike vote, but J. H.
Brown QC, alternate chairman
of the Labour Relations Board,
dismissed the charge, because
the act does not require a vote
to precede a strike.
Labour Relations Board
registrar A. M. Brunskill said the
company has also made
application to seek the right to
prosecute Local 448 Retail,
Wholesale and Department Store
Union, A.F.L.-C.I.O.-C.L.C.
which represents the workers,
for calling and authorizing the
strike. A hearing has been
scheduled May 29 in London.
The workers went on strike,
April 9, following two strike
votes. The first, March 9, ended
in a 3-3 tie. A week later the
workers voted 4-2 to strike.
Hotel owners Mr. and Mrs,
Charles Karpas have taken the
position that the strike is illegal
because the workers have not
been certified as a union by the
board. The board certified the
union November 14, 1968.
Efforts to negotiate a
contract have failed. An Ontario
Department of Labour
conciliator met with the parties
January 22 without success, No
