On the second day of 1969, Acme Neon Signs (London) Ltd., began their sign manufacturing business in building 36, formerly occupied by the C & E section at the former RCAF station. The complete operation was moved to Centralia along with PLANT SUPERINTENDENT BILL SRIGLEY WITH A SIGN READY FOR SHIPMENT a resident of Huron Park who has been in this type of business for close to 20 years. In 1949, Deary started his own company, Lettercraft of Canada and manufactured plastic letters. He is now a major shareholder in Acme. Neon and plastic signs and highway billboards of all shapes and sizes are manufactured at Centralia. The basic reason for moving to Centralia was the larger quarters available along with the opportunity to operate a little more economically than in the city. Firth said, "We didn't need to stay in London. Centralia is well in the centre of our trading area which extends from Windsor on the south, to Niagara Falls and Toronto on the east and Owen Sound to the north." The general manager went on to say, "The combination of plastic and neon sign seems to becoming the most popular. Plastic gives brilliance and high intensity in illumination while neon provides the action." The company employs four salesmen that have certain specified territories and come up with their own contacts. After contacting a prospective customer, the salesman brings a request for a sketch back to the Centralia office on the basis of information on the business and the building on which the sign may be installed. The Acme artists do a full colour sketch and it is then taken back to the customer for any changes and his approval. If an order is forthcoming it is taken back for office approval. The accepted sketch is then given to the plant superintendent for the necessary work order. The layout department does an actual full scale pattern of the sign. Next in line is the metal shop for fabrication of the metal to be used. The pattern goes on to the neon or plastic shop or both for manufacturing of the tubes and plastic letters. At the same time, the box built in the metal shop is being wired and painted. The plastic or neon is then installed on the sign which is ready for testing under C.S.A. and Ontario Hydro regulations. After testing, the sign is ready for shipment to the customer and installation by an Acme crew on the site. Customers may purchase their signs outright or enter into a five-year rental contract with payment on a monthly basis. The company now has about 800' . 'signs v out on rental', contracts. ct 20 persons that were employed at the firm's Wharneliffe 'South. location in London. General manager Alec Firth said eight workers were recruited locally to go with the nucleus.of the staff from London. Of the London workers that started commuting, eight have taken up residence in'Hitron Park, The Centralia based firm is headed by president Bill Deary, • CHUCK McLEOD CUTTING METAL ON FIRST STEP OF MANUFACTURE pdara a#td 4ec' 4 Radd qele.e94 I • • 1 • PRESIDENT BILL DEARY AND BOB MILLER WITH PLASTIC CORRUGATING MACHINE BILL ATKINSON IN NEON TUBE BENDING OPERATION • • J C C C C j C C j NSTALLING LIGHTS ON • r SANDY THOMPSON • :0 • ) • ARTIST DAN CRAWFORD ON A DESIGN X ii • • GENERAL MANAGER ALEC FIRTH AND STENOGRAPHER JO-ANNE DEARY
