their ideas and suggestions for
better government for the
people of Huron,
"We're in a listening mood,"
interjected Warden Hayter.
In the meantime, a brief was
submitted to the Hon. W. Darcy
McKeough, Minister of
Municipal Affairs, when council
was in Toronto March 26.
Three main points were
stressed in the brief: the future
of the assessment department
and the use of the administrative
building; a definite plan for
establishing regional government
in Huron as to area, population,
and timing for change; and the
possibility of Huron becoming a
region unto itself with legislative
authority to properly carry out
the functions of regional
government.
The brief was well received,
council noted.

will be dissolved because the two
United Church congregations at
Crediton agreed to amalgamate
earlier this year.
The one Crediton
congregation had been part of
the Evangelical United Brethren
denomination which
amalgamated with the United
Church of Canada on January 1
of this year.
Rev. Howard Zurbrigg, the
E.U.B. minister remained as
pastor of the new Crediton Zion
United Church congregation. He
leaves at the end of June to
become a district secretary for
the Canadian Bible Society in
Hamilton,
Talk of amalgamating the two
Exeter congregations
commenced following the
Crediton move, which left Main
St. by itself.
The local church has a
congregation of 143 families,
and the General Council of the
United Church recommends a
congregation of at least 250
families to support one full-time
minister.

matter and council has been in
touch with Hon. C. S.
MacNaughton, provincial
treasurer.
Exeter Reeve Derry Boyle
said the province had given
Huron an opportunity to get in
on the 75 percent grant, but
Huron turned it down when
they did not amalgamate with
Perth County for health
purposes.
-We didn't turn down a 75
percent grant," retorted
McKinley, "We turned down
amalgamation. We are being
refused the grant because we
didn't do as we were told."
In his budget report,
Clerk-treasurer John Berry said
he would like to see a "much
closer relationship and planning
program between the provincial
government and the local
municipalities".
Said Berry, "I feel a prime
example of this lack of planning
has been in the takeover of the
assessment departments. If we at
the local level are going to work
towards a better municipal
government for our area, then
we must have the co-operation
and trust of the Provincial
authorities in planning and
preparing for our future.'
In a report of the special
committee on regional
government, Chairman Frank
congregation were desirous of
trying to maintain their own
church, but the congregation
voted by a majority of 74 to 23
on Sunday to accept the James
St. proposal to amalgamate.
A committee had been named
at Main St. to consider the
avenues open to them and the
committee reported that
amalgamation was the "one and
only one course of action open
to us at this time".
Frank Wildfong was chairman
of the committee and Bruce
Shaw was secretary. Members
included Mrs. A. Gardiner, Russ
Hopper, Ken Johns, Mrs. Earl
Russell, Mrs. Wayne Tuckey and
Oscar Tuckey.
The amalgamation has to be
approved by Presbytery, but this
appears a formality.
No further meetings to
initiate the amalgamation have
been planned as yet.
