BY APPOINTMENT
When the Huron County
Board of Education opened
tenders Monday evening, the
price of converting space at
Central Huron Secondary School
here into offices for the school
system's central staff was found
to be "considerably higher than
anticipated," in the words of
John Lavis, board chairman.
Mr. Lavis said tenders were
opened at the board's
closed-door session prior to the
regular meeting. He refused to
disclose the names of bidders,
the amounts of tenders
submitted or the original

estimate of Page and Steele,
architects for the planned
renovation.
The board chairman would
say only that the architects will
be instructed to try to negotiate
a reduction in the lowest tender.
To release details now would not
be in the board's best interests,
Mr. Lavis added.
When the board last month
decided to establish its head
office in Clinton, one contractor
whose name was not disclosed
was said to have estimated the
cost of renovation at $23,200,
without air conditioning which
reportedly would cost about
$3,000 more.
The board subsequently

Best return
for rummage
Hundreds of area residents
pushed and jostled in the Exeter
Legion Hall Saturday at the
annual hospital auxiliary spring
rummage sale,
They were in buying frame of
mind, too, for Mrs. Charles
Snell, co-convener with Mrs.
Andy Johnston reports receipts
of $1337 from the event.
"It was the best we've ever
had," Mrs, Snell said.
"There was a terrific amount
of merchandise for sale, noted
Mrs, Snell. "Much more than
we've ever had before. It was all
donated by people in Exeter and
area."
The toy counter was emptied
in 15 to 20 minutes from the
time the doors were opened.
Book and record sales were high
again this year, as usual.
At the auction sale, the
public was in a bidding mood.
There was no immediate report
on the amount realized in this
department.
Although there will be a
rummage sale in the fall, no
items will be held over until
then. All merchandise not sold
Saturday was picked up by the
Salvation Army of London to be
distributed among needy
families.

Conning crops down
due to large surplus
While contracting is now
going on with district farmers
for peas and corn by the Exeter
branch of Canadian Canners, the
exact number of acres to be
planted is not known.
Jack Urquhart, manager of
the Exeter operation told the
T-A Wednesday morning, "I
really don't know the exact
acreage that will be contracted,
but there will be a reduction in
both. A lot of growers will be
without these cash crops this
year. Some have already been
told of the reduction."
The acreage cut is due to the
large surplus of peas and corn in
the province of Ontario.
Urquhart also said the reduction
in acreage is province-wide.
The local manager also said
no planting has taken place as
yet, although several fields
leased by the plant had been
worked before the wet weather
set in early this week.
The first peas were planted
last year on April 9. Urquhart
said the average seeding time is
April 16.20.
