The Crediton Tigers, last
year's intermediate hockey
grand champions of the Western
Ontario Athletic Association
were slowed down a bit, Sunday
in their bid to make a repeat
performance.
After disposing of the
Milverton Four Wheel Drives in a
tough six game series for the
southern division title, the Tigers
took on the Kincardine Bulldogs
in Kincardine, Sunday afternoon
and were on the wrong end of a
9-3 score.
The second game of the
best-of-seven series was played at
Huron Park last night,
Wednesday with the third going
in Kincardine Saturday night
and the fourth back at Centralia,
Sunday night at 8:30.
NEVER RECOVERED
The home Kincardine club
skated to a 5-1 lead in the first
twenty minutes of play and the
Tigers were never able to recover
from the original deficit of four
goals.
Paul Young fired the only
Crediton goal of the opening
session on a play started by Bill
Chipchase.
In the middle period, Craig

One of the district's most
prominent figures was buried
last Tuesday at Grand Bend.
William Henry Sweitzer had
lived all his life in this area and
had given freely of his energies
for the betterment of the
community.
Sweitzer was the son of Lydia
Morlock and Sam Sweitzer. In a
scrapbook compiled by William
Sweitzer during his lifetime, he
wrote, "I was raised in Shipka
and a wonderful place it was."
The Sweitzer family owned
the mills in Shipka — the
chopping mill, the saw mill, the
flax mill and the apple butter
mill. After his father's death in
1913, William purchased the
mills from his mother.
He writes, "I bought bushes
from farmers and shipped
lumber to Owen Sound and
other places."
A man for keeping accurate
neat records, Sweitzer was
apparently an able businessman.
A ledger still in the possession
of his children shows that wages
in 1910 were not what they are
today. For six months work, one
of Sweitzer's employees received
$110. The employee could not
have been dissatisfied for records
show him a Sweitzer hand for
several more years.
Mr. Sweitzer charged his
customers only for the time he
worked for them. The ledger
frequently records charges for
four-tenths of a day or
eight-tenths of a day. He paid his
employees by the same system.
The remarkable ledger
contains records of many of his
business transactions from 1910
to 1953. It is a testimony to the
changes throughout the years.
Random notes throughout
the ledger attest to such
pleasurable receipts as
committee pay while Warden of
the County of Huron in 1935

as money sent to the

The late Mr. Sweitzer was
acclaimed warden of Huron
County after 15 years in
municipal politics. Described in
the press at that time as a "quiet
spoken likeable man" Mr.
Sweitzer put his business head to
work for the taxpayers.
At his retirement Mr.
Sweitzer claimed the county of
Huron had no debt other than
the provincial debt!
He claimed a record for
management in Stephen
Township council, also. Said Mr.
Sweitzer at the time of his
acclamation as Stephen reeve in
1936, "We have paid no interest
to the banks for the past five
years, and besides that we have
cash exceeding $8,000 which
should be a credit not only to
the municipality but to the
people who are 100 percent
taxpayers."
It is of interest to note an
entry in the Sweitzer ledger
following a county council
session in 1929.
"We visited the registry office
to inspect the condition there,"
wrote Sweitzer. "It seems that
most all the registry offices have
all metal drawers, the drawers
holding the papers. To fix this
up the way the man had
outlined would mean an expense

of about $5,500. We saw fit as a

the present time."
"I noticed that Stephen has, I
believe, about 180 drawers," he
continued. "This is not in line
with our work. I am merely
telling this as it was amusing to
me to notice those different
methods."
Mr. Sweitzer made reference
in his scrapbook to his 1914
Maxwell car, the first
automobile to be owned in
Shipka.
Clippings in the scrapbook
were not all about Sweitzer.
Some headlines include "Is
World Surrendering To Stalin?"
"Hitler 'Keep Fit' Program
Widens Preparedness Basis,
Compels Nazi Membership" and
"Great Peacemaker In Suez
Dispute, Pearson Gets Prize."
It even has a full-length
photograph of Hitler's lady, Eva
Braun.

Many of those charged were
