pop. In ten years, you won't be
able to step on a piece of nature
south of the Arctic Circle
without twisting your ankle on
an empty beer-can.
Next. Long-distance dial
telephone calls. A few years ago,
you gave your number to good
old operator, and within a
reasonable time, you got your
party, or didn't.
On the do-it-yourself plan,
with a string of digits as long as
your leg, anything can happen.
A friend of mine called his son
in Montreal the other night. He
didn't have his glasses on, and
wound up talking to the
secretary of the Sheep Breeders'
Association in Auckland, New
Zealand,
How about zippers? Great
invention, but it should have
been strangled at birth. What
ever happened to the good old
button? Every time I tangle with
a zipper, whether it's on my
galoshes or my fly, there is a
moment of sheer, cold
apprehension. Often it's justified
— and there I am with my
galoshes flopping around like a
pair of drunken crows.
Politicians. Not all of them.
Only those who promise to hold
the line on expenses, while
providing better services. And
then do the opposite.
Taxes. The rich are hit hard,
but have enough left to avoid
starvation. The poor pay none,
or very little. It's the
middle-income bird who gets it
where it hurts. One of these
days, I'm off to Bermuda, where
"taxes" is a dirty word.
Social slavery. We know that
as individuals, we have free will.
But we are strangled with so
many regulations and traditions
and pressures that our free will
becomes a broken-winged bird in
a cage tastefully decorated with
red tape and ridiculosity.
Love. If there's anything that
turns my stomach, it is people
who preach love, including
hippies, and spend most of their
time telling you about all the
people and things they hate.
Hate. How can people hate
other people? Yet they do. I
hate but I can't remember ever
hating a person in my life. Lots
of people are despicable,
contemptible, malicious or just
plain boring. But you don't hate
them, You pity them. I hate
hate, and there's lots of it
around.
O.K., chaps. It's your turn.
Let's hear from you. This is hate
week.
The fifth game of the series
played in Blyth on Tuesday
night was jam packed with
action as the Blyth team were
Out to try and even up the series.
In the first period, Doug Smith
blinked the red light for the first
marker of the night at 15:05.
There were many break aways,
but nobody was able to
capitalize.
During the second period,
Perry Mattson on a pass from.
Garry Koehler at the 1:05 mark.
Blyth managed to confuse "THE
BIG 0" boys and Keith Howatt
beat Bob Clement for Blyth's
first marker, An assist going to
Brian Millar, With "THE BIG 0"
leading, the Blyth boys really
turned on the pressure and at
9:01. Ron Plunkett from Donald
Carter evened the score at the
end of regulation time.
During the ten minute
overtime "THE BIG 0" at, 2:50
Danny Winsor from Doug Smith
and again at the 4:27 mark,
Perry Mattson from Jamie
Caldwell were leading by two
goals.
But Blyth was not yet ready
to throw in the sponge and at
6:07 David Rodger got a break
away with only a defenceman to
beat, he shot and as the puck
will sometimes do, it took a
crazy little hop over John
Charrette's stick, hit his skate and
beat Bob Clement for another
tally for Blyth.
The game ended with the
score 4-3 for "THE BIG 0". A
victory and a trophy to bring
home. Now, you know what all
the noise was about Tuesday
night in Hensall.
"THE BIG 0" now moves on
to the Grand Championship, in
which the winners of the B, C, D
and E category will play off.
On Wednesday, March 12,
Southampton was at Hensel' to
take on "THE BIG 0". Friday
night, March 14th, "THE BIG
0' will be in Southampton and
the third game will be on
Sunday, but where, was not
known at press time.
